See what is suspect is that PragerU's videos ARE so polished. Real educational videos from universities are the most unpolished and low entertainment videos ever made. 99% of the time its the lecturer reading from a PowerPoint slide.

i think that's part of the problem. you roll up to anyone who actually knows their shit and it's in 240p with a mic straight out of 2007. but with prageru, the lighting is on point. the content is a little stilted and awkward, but it's concise and easy to follow. it kind of reminds me of how most left wing news outlets either are behind a paywall or immediately attack you for having your adblocker on, but right wing outlets with the same kinds of headlines are right there and easy to read

What’s sad is that their well-polished infographics and animations don’t just make them look _as established_ as universities, it makes them look more established. Every video I’ve seen from a university is low resolution footage with audio that sounds like they’re talking into a toaster, edited in something like iMovie or Windows Movie Maker using stock transitions, with awkward speaking and pacing. And those are the things actually produced by universities. I’ve also seen so many videos where a leading expert in some field makes a video teaching something, and it looks like a grandparent on a video call, talking into their laptop’s built-in webcam/mic. I mean, I can think of one in particular where at the end of the video, this respected researcher literally asks his grandson to come in and help him stop the recording. Don’t get me wrong, it was a cute moment, but it did make him look a little less official and authoritative compared to something as polished as PragerU.

@@ridanann This was posted 4 months ago. That's July. Which was very fucking hot in the northern hemisphere, where I happen to live. Hence my comment, since when it's 35+ºC outside you don't want to stay warm. Also, the southern hemisphere is colder on average than the northern, we just think of areas close to the equator when people say "southern hemisphere" because, from the global north, it is in fact southward.

@@ridanann That sounds kinds racist tbh. First the northern hemisphere is not as cold as you say. Siberia and Canada ere really fucking big and it doesn't snow all year round in either and it can get pretty fucking hot in the UK, as showcased by this last summer, and you are ignoring all the hot parts of the northern hemisphere: Mexico, North Africa, the Sahara, the middle east, etc. Special mention to the hottest place on earth, the death valley. Second, not all of the southern hemisphere is as hot as you say. Australia is pretty hot, yeah, but not so much in the case of Argentina, Chile, New Zealand, southernmost South Africa, and of course the coldest place on earth, Antarctica. I think you're working off of previous assumptions and refusing to see the global north and south as anything other than the monolithic preconceptions of them you already had.
@ridanann

@@Alexlalpaca I'm basing it by populated geographical regions in the south the equator is more populous then nearer nearer the Pole where is the North is populated right the way up to the pole basically within a few hundred feet the human experience is a cold North weather doesn't matter when there's no people. Antarctica is like the moon you can't really go there so who cares if you need a t-shirt or a jacket it doesn't even have spiders the top is only geographically warmer because of the wobble as far as human experience goes the South Pole might as well be mythological. The phrase the global South really should be the global Midlands not to mention the populated South is evidently warmer just going by geographical phenotypes I'm white because there is a lack of sunlight if my ancestors spent the last 2000 years in South Africa I would be as black is Kanye West thinks he is Wesley Snipes would have nothing on me and that is to do with the geographical environment plus Africa being the cradle of civilisation the people still have a tan all along that line South and North but the point is if you go south from there you don't find pale skin people suffering s*** weather where is if you go North you immediately bump into miserable bastards in raincoats listening to Oasis lol New Zealand is the closest thing the Southern Hemisphere has to Britain and of course Peter Jackson knew that but it is not very populous and most of its native populus retain phenotypes from significantly warmer regions australasian tend to be pretty dark in the British and Irish Isles Scandinavia Russia people well if I get wet you can see right through me. You're probably wondering what makes the Inuit Brown firstly they get more sunlight despite the freezing temperature secondly their diet actually give them melanin technically for British populations eating an Inuit diet would cure our melanin deficiency overtime it's been going on about 5000 years now but it certainly isn't normal when you look at usual human skin we probably look like ghosts 2 most people's of the world winter is coming and it was colonialism people in those hot countries don't even know what happened to our old people every year. Which makes me think if the South near the pole was as popular as it is in the North maybe the colonisation would have happened in mirror the hostile environment undoubtably breeds are very Hardy human being New Zealand is about Akin to Australia as Britain is from North Africa if New Zealand was 5 times the size maybe history would be completely different.

@@carlogaytan7010 I dont know if I can agree with that sentiment. Some kids really do benefit from home school if done competently. Due to this they homeschooled the younger children before starting a small charter school for children falling behind in larger schools(private or public). It was a far more accellerated learning program and allowed students to catch up to where they needed to be and even accellerate past what children their age did. One student completed calc two during their freshman year of highschool. 1) The goal of a conservative speaking is not to debate or argue in the sense of dialectic, or to pursue a truth. It is to "win", often time with "a-ha" moments. The card says "moops". 2) they know what they're saying is nonsense. For those who don't truly believe it, the fear of what would happen if they admit they're wrong makes them believe the only way to continue is to dig their hole, further entrenching the dogma. 3) The goal is to twist language, and thus the narrative, to better suit their goals. When the right say that the nazis were leftists despite having nazis in their ranks, that's done to muddle the word nazi and leftist at the same time. 4) the point of saying "facts don't care about your feelings" is exactly that: these beliefs they consider immutable (the conservative equivalent of "facts") cannot bend or change if they cause someone else suffering, or, in some cases, the point of these beliefs is so others suffer. The right does not have an interest in the pursuit of truth, only the implementation of their concept of truth- one that is self-serving, immutable, and full of double standards. "The only moral abortion is my abortion", for example. For people who love to call things "literally 1984", they don't seem to recognize that they're the ones speaking in newspeak and doublethink. Or, if they do, they just don't care. Do not mistake apathy for incompetence.

I think algorithms are a big problem with today’s political climate. Sometimes you go to sites like KZbin to learn about different sides but you eventually only get one type of video recommended to you. This can convince people that everyone shares just one viewpoint when in reality people are on a spectrum and what they truly believe in and stand for is on a spectrum. People end up being divided when in reality they’ll never know what common ground they stand on

Or you could just pay attention to things like Joe Biden lying his ass off literally every time he speaks(when you can actually understand him or he can actually complete the sentence) for the last 50 years? Then you put 2 and 2 together and figure out who the real liars are...... this is what I would do but that is just me. Years ago, corn producers latched on to some legitimate research and started saying, "High-fructose corn syrup isn't any worse for you than regular sugar!" And they were right... but in the wrong direction. The research had discovered regular sugar was actually just as bad for you as HFCS was thought to be, not that HFCS was better than originally thought. So they were the same but in a bad direction, not the good one implied by the "isn't any worse" statement. In the same vein, and as you point out, PragerU is putting Reaganite and Bush-era (I and II) conservatives on the same prestige footing and within the same ideological neighborhood as alt-right extremists. However, while (as you again point out) this serves to burnish the images of the extremists, what it should really do is highlight the fact that "conventional" conservatism and "normal" conservative thought are rife with bigotry, evidence-free claims, religious zealotry, theocratic ambitions, homophobia, and contempt for the rights and humanity of anyone they identify as "other". The alt-right and traditional conservatism really are quite similar... but in the bad direction, where the alt-right are just saying the quiet parts loud.

Way back in the pre-MAGA days, I did watch one PragerU video all the way through, and was a bit curious and concerned about the claims they were making. I was almost suicidally depressed at the time, so... I was kinda psychologically vulnerable, and prone to desperately leap at new ideas that might give me some sort of clarity or hope about the future. The KZbin algorithm actually swooped immediately to my aid, though, by directing me to a rebuttal video, which proved conclusively to me that PragerU had twisted the facts. Well anyway, now I'm pretty sure my depression was due to gender dysphoria and self-directed transphobia the whole time, so I guess there's no way in heck I'd ever veer back toward that kind of thinking!

I’m confused... how is the way PragerU operates (creating short and long form content with various speakers, selling merchandise, promoting their content, and offering exclusive content/merchandise for paying supporters) any different than how other youtube channels operate? I get that they have many employees that make videos on different subjects in their name, but then again... don’t channels like Buzzfeed, College Humor, or Vox use similar approaches? It’s just because it’s conservative ideas that you don’t like it and you’ve labeled it a “pipeline to the alt-right” lol You also said they have a monopoly on conservative KZbin, when in fact there are other conservative channels that function pretty similar to PragerU such as Daily Wire or BlazeTV. I feel like you focused so much on the fact that PragerU is a successful operation of conservative media and that’s “bad” that you forgot to actually criticize anything they actually say in their videos. Overall tho, thanks for sharing your thoughts, I always like to hear different opinions (:

I used to be alt right. This was around the time I saw myself as an incel. For me, I was angry at the world. And I needed people who appealed to me. How hard was it to change your perspective on things? Did it take years?
@KallenMalefic
@KallenMalefic Жыл бұрын
@@oliverwilson5957 kind of. I was in a state of depression. Basically, to me, everything going wrong "could not be my own fault". The fact that I live in a very right wing environment only helped to reinforce that. However, over time I found myself questioning certain topics. For example, I was very anti Nazi. However, I noticed people around me has very similar ideas to them. So I started to asked, and funny enough I was started to be seen as a "fake patriot". Over time I decided to look at the other side. And while part of me still had that programming, I felt that they were right about things. Slowly I began to see that no there was no "gay agenda". Slowly I realized that there is no "white genocide" or anything like that. As someone who was on that side for years I'll say that it has two sides. It is a cult. They treat you like brothers, sisters, and yes they even welcome nonwhites. However it is only a front. As soon as you question, or even challenge them, you are cut off right away. A lot of people are also pressured into that side out of fear. Fear of losing your family, friends, and community. So even if they know it is wrong, they let it slide for fear of being left alone. I know some people who don't want to be part of that side, but do it because they have nowhere to turn to. The right wing is a cult. It is an organization that uses love and acceptance as a reward for being loyal and following their rules. And fear as a punishment.

Listening, talking, thinking, asking questions and debating are all critical to understanding. Those who wall themselves off from unlike thoughts are doomed to be herded like sheep. Both the alt-Right and alt-Left need to start doing more than preaching, and they both need to be far more honest, something that is much lacking today. PragerU can keeps audiences hooked. It's like leftist youtube values quality over quantity, but are losing because of it. I kinda like what Some More News is doing where they put out episodes once a week, and they tend to focus more on what's happening today than broad philosophical/political concepts. The only problem, if you want to call it that, is that they are still once a week and each episode is about an hour long. Would I want them to sacrifice their quality in exchange for 5 uploads a day all lasting about 5-10 minutes each? Definitely not, but I don't see platforms like that being able to rival what PragerU has going for them

The overall problem is that Reich-wing talking points are short and easily regurgitated. All they do is support the status quo, and you don't really have to argue *for* the status quo. You just say what the status quo is, and then say, "isn't that good?" And you're done. Where they're not supporting the status quo, they're supporting "traditional" ideas that are, also, not argued for. They simply declare what those ideas are and that they're good. Maybe they give a few cherry-picked pieces of evidence for them, but that's it. Anything that argues against tradition or the status quo has to put for an *argument.* You can't change the status quo by saying, "wouldn't it be good if X?" You have to actually convince people. And that takes time. Similarly, deconstructing non-arguments from the alt-reich is a lot harder than spouting nonsense. The average PragerU video is like 5 minutes long, but debunking videos average 20 minutes. Because it takes that long to properly deconstruct their nonsense. And indeed, the *more* nonsensical their ideas are, the longer it takes to debunk them.

“Polished and put together…” Except that PragerU’s shitty animation uses linear interpolation curves that somehow catapult their stick-figures straight into the uncanny valley!

Sudden realization: PragerU is the modern equivalent of The American Review. The American Review was a magazine published from 1933-1937 which published essays from a variety of different flavors of conservatism -- including some that, looking back on it through modern eyes, were "conservative" only in the sense of being anti-communist but would be considered progressive or vaguely "left but hard to categorize" today. The goal was not to promote these ideas but to lend credibility toward the magazine's actual editorial goal, which was explicitly to promote fascism.

"They put these people on the same playing field as Ginni Thomas." That line either aged like milk or gave away the game.

Wonder if Dickinson and Cowin will update their paper before it's published (I suspect the revelations of wat she was up to on/before 1/6 came upt while they were working on the paper)
