Hi. I just came across your channel while researching the Altec Model 19. I read in one of your replies here that the Model 19 is your favourite and is more an all round speaker. I listen mostly to jazz from the 50s to 60s era. I was wondering based on your experience would a duplex 640 type or a Model 19 suit my listening tastes better? Thanks

Hi Nick, all I can tell you is based on my personal experiences with Altec Lansing speakers & chassis in top original condition or restaurated if necessary. I have a bunch of different Altec Lansing speakers, classic Jazz music is my main but not only hobby. If you take a look around vintage speakers you come to the classical duplex speaker chassis 605 and 604 and their later sisters & brothers. I own the 604E and planted it in a new build utility cabinet ( you may have seen in my other videos). Some people say the 604E is kind of a holy grail, it is quiet expensive today and it isn´t easy to get a real good pair, for small money, even if you search worldwide. Concerning the matching cabinet the Altec 620 cabinet will reduce the remarkable lack of bass/ deep bass. A lot of owners use this 620 cabinet, it has more volume than the smaller ones. Others use additional subwoofers or Ripol speakers to substitute the low frequency spectrum. In my ears the x-overs are another sensible theme with the 604 - I use individual x-overs made by Werner Jagusch in Germany. There are alternative x-overs out there ( Markwort, Soundlabs etc.), I did not try a lot of them but anyone has to judge with his own ears, I guess. I would like to point out that the matching Altec Lansing x-overs are not the best choice. While the 604E reproduces wonderful brillant highs and nearly perfect mids and good higher bass frequencies with a lot charme, glow and live like stage, the deep bass is missing. You may correct this problem, but it leads to additional costs and more equipment in your audio chain - not anyone likes that. The 604 are best for vocal music, classical chamber music and smaller jazz combos. The Altec 19 speakers give bass- oh yes - they reproduce any style of music very well. I don´find any major problems. They are allrounders to my ears. The aluminium horns are not ringing in my ears ( stay critically to any writer if you read about this "bug" in the web!) The only negative point: the model 19´s are big as fridges and need some space placed in a room. Simply try to hear the different Altec speakers live & with music you know very well.... before you make a decision and go on the search for buying... All the best, Joerg - by the way: the Sin Audio 300B valve tube mono amps deliver around 2x 7Watts max ;-)

Hello! I love your channel. I would love to know. Which is your favorite of your speakers you have featured on your channel?

Thanks so much, John! Speakers? Beginning with modern high range Hifi gear I became a lover of vintageaudio over the years as you may have recognized. If you ask for a generalist with wide purpose range, I think my favorite is the Altec Lansing model 19. Concerning vocalmusic, smaller line-ups and acoustic music the Altec 604E duplex built in a large, ventilated cabinet or even as an open baffle may reproduce a more live hearing experience with a bit more accentuation of the heights, probably perfect mids but less deep bass. The Altec 920-8B, if you may find a proper pair of these rare coax/ duplex speakers that were originally intended as ceiling built-in speakers, were a big surprise to me when I heard them first. Over decades no one cared about these chassis that were intended and sold as ceiling built-in speakers in hotels, congress halls and bigger public rooms . The legend 604E, the model 19´s, model 17´s always stood in the center of buyer´s interest. But - the 920-8B have a lot of advantages. First of all their price is underrated, still today they are a budget buy. if you will be able to find an offer. Years ago one could get a pair for handful $. What you get is a speaker built in good old high quality with an integrated crossover that is fine so far. If you have heard my videos with the 920-8B built in an openbaffle you hear a budget solution that doesn´t kick the model 19 or 604 but it is a great experience and maybe just a quantum beyond the soundquality of the bigger brothers. I like it very much. To lift the 920-8B on a higher level my way would be constructiong optimized, external crossovers and the try to put the 920 in real big bassreflex cabinets. PIONEER: You heard my old 3-way CS 701? O.k. in the video, they aren´t placed ideal - they stand on the floor, the bassreflection is too much, the bass too fat. Place these cheapies in a smaller listeningroom, put them on a rocksolid speaker stands on ear´s height and you´ll be a happy listener. More volume, more frequency spectrum desired? The more rare ( old) Pioneer CS 901 could be a way.... For the last months I am enjoying my DIY restorated Altec model 19 😄

@@joergkoch8448 Thank you so much for the thoughtful reply. You have a wonderful array of speaker options! Thank you for the recommendation of the 920-8b. I will keep my eye out for them. I have always wanted a set of the 604 speakers as I don't think I can fit the model 19 in my space. I have a hunch the Model 846b Valencia's would be a very good fit based on your experience with the model 19's. I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

@@thetakeout John, if your homebase is USA there won´t be any problem to find a nice pair of ol´Altec 920-8B. They were originally used as built-in speakers in all these churches, socialclubs, public buildings, hotel ballrooms and so on. They were also sold including different Altec utility cabinets for PA purposes/ live concerts. The Valencia, I´m sure, is a good choice if cabinet size matters. 👍

@@joergkoch8448 I will be on the Search! I wonder if the Valencia Drivers would fit and perform well in the 620 cabinet that you have.
@joergkoch84482 жыл бұрын
@@thetakeout No these are not the 620. I use a rebuilt of the smaller 612u (utility) cabinets for the 604E speakers. My built story: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnqvaWp5idd7hbc . Concerning a marriage of your Valencia drivers with another pair of bigger cabinets - it will be trial & error and I think the crossovers will neeed an upgrade. It may have had reasons for each of Altec factory setups. Nowadays there a software tools for design/construction of cabinets matching to the special drivers concept. Just my thoughts... ;-)

Hello Martin, these Altec amps are 1593B solid state, 50watts. The ones with the nice sounding Peerless transformers. Never heard the older valve tube version in real life... The Sun Audio valve monos are playing in this video.

I think the amplifiers are not 220 volt ?
@joergkoch84482 жыл бұрын
@@martinvanrens7486 As far as I see, these amps are US powernet type with 117-125V in. I guess you will need an external voltage converter for primary 230 V, 150Watt, secondary 17-125V. If the amps were internally convertable, Mr. Müller of cjm should know. I made bad experiences with external voltage converters - the very good converters are not on the cheap side. ;-)
