Your thinking is very logical, but...it was an actual release by Sega & Asmik. I have it CIB, which has "sega" printed on it, not to mention some cool box art. The Famicom also had both Space Harrier (Takara) and After Burner (Sunsoft) ports.

Sega wanted money They licensed out space harrier, shinobi, both fantasy zones (the first one twice) and afterburner They ported a bunch of games to the pc engine too

The only good other version other then the arcade and Genesis the rest are just awful
