Altered Beast Review for the Sega Genesis by Second Opinion Games

I remember back in the late 80's, I thought this game was really cool, although I never really got to play it that much. I really liked the mythology theme. But a few years ago, I downloaded the arcade version for the Wii and I don't think it's aged well. My main problem is the controls seem really stiff and it's really hard to avoid taking hits. I haven't found any strategy that works better than "run up to enemy and just punch as fast as possible." And as far as fighting the bosses as a human, level three and beyond I usually don't have a choice. I have so much trouble getting to the white dogs with magic testicles, that they almost always run off the screen before I can kill them. So I often don't get a chance to level up to total beast mode by the time I reach the boss. I guess for the time it was OK, but then Golden Ax came out and it was just so much better. I still love playing Golden Ax, but Altered Beast seems more nostalgic curiosity than a good retro game.

the controls of Altered beast was greatly improved for the Genesis. Plus in the home version the testicles are nearly shoved in your face as you have to doge them when doing the human run.

Fun review! Have to say short games appeal to me. I never played this back in the day so it will be worth giving it a shot.

This game was pivotal to me. I made my mind up between nes or a genesis for my first self bought system. I saved up my work money and almost got an nes but wanted this and Sega arcade games!! I remember seeing this back at toys r us back in 89'. I was blown away by its graphics and voice." Wise frwom wor gwave!!" Lol. Seriously its a decent pack in and graphical showcase back in its day!!!

I love this game. It is one of my games that I can play any time. When I first saw it I felt like the arcade came home :)

I can appreciate enthusiasm for personal favorites. As far as underrated games go, there are so many... so I'll just give a couple. Team Innocent (PC-FX)- it's basically anime Resident Evil, but years before RE came out. Pre-rendered backgrounds, limited supplies, monsters... but it uses scaling sprites instead of polygon characters. Dr Chaos-survival horror before Sweet Home, but with some Metroid flavor. Super Spy Hunter (NES)- It just rules, and is nothing like the arcade game. Calcolo (PS1)- a puzzle shooter hybrid that kinda mixes Twinkle Star Sprites and Puyo Puyo. Lode Runner: The Dig Fight (Arcade)- one of my favorite pcbs that I own. It's old-school Lode Runner, but with an awesome co-op campaign and 4 player vs modes. Killer.

@@Mikey-zj8bn It's horror themed, has resources that must be scavenged... I mean, you can of course view it however you like, but it does most of what the original Resident Evil did, but in 2D.

Nice coverage! It does add a lot of replay ability. But that doesn’t matter bc I’ve still never even beat this game. I’m doing it tonight no continue code (probly) lol

I think you can do it. I would at least use the code to get a little more health. It also is a great two player drinking game :)

IBM? Keith Courage was the original Turbografx pack-in, and I agree, I prefer and even love it... there are actually 5 games based on that franchise in Japan. The Famicom sequel is a decent Zelda 2-esque game, the two GB games are basically virtual pet sims, and the PS1 game is an RPG.

Now try and beat th earcade human only. In all seriousness, this is a pale imitation of the arcade, and if you think this conversion prepares you, you will get SCHOOLED.
