Altered box with Opal Magic paints - mixed media tutorial

In this tutorial (created for Mixed Media Place blog) I show you how to alter a simple wooden box and to turn it to a magical treasurers box, using Prima Marketing mixed media products - Finnabair line. To color the box I use an Art Alchemy Opal Magic acrylic paints.

With the hinged and latched boxes, do you take off the hardware first, and do you gesso over the hardware, or just leave it alone? It's an old Prima Marketing stencil. I don't know what the name, because I can't find it even on Prima site. So I don't think that you still could find it somewhere.
