Alternate Art Pokemon Cards and Booster Boxes from Sword and Shield have seen massive buyouts resulting in confusion all over the Pokemon Market. Prices skyrocketed through the majority of May as FOMO spread throughout the community. Pokemon Content Creators and Influencers spent a ton of time trying to understand what was going on in the world of Pokemon Cards.
Now, fast forward only 2 short months, and things have completely flipped. Many Alternate Art Pokemon Cards have retraced and seen substantial price crashes losing the majority of the value they gained. Will this continue, or will we see another spike? Let's talk about it!

Last year when the Umbreon was like $500 I traded a lot of duplicates and cards I didn’t have the urge to keep in my collection that I had to get it. Those cards value added up to like $630 or so at the time. I asked myself after if I ripped myself off. It was a little crazy and the biggest trade or purchase in the TCG I’d done. Fast forward to now and the Umbreon is worth over $200 more than what I traded and those cards are down to like $540 in value. So I feel infinitely better about the trade lol

I bought all these cards awhile back when they were at their lows then they spiked and i went and sold them all for a massive profit and now the prices are coming back down so i can rebuy all my cards again and basically be at a net positive while still retaining my collection. Lugia is explainable due to the guaranteed hit packs that were out. I witness it myself, got 30 packs and only a couple didnt have a hit. Probably due to it being a mix of the packs before they were restocked and the restocked ones.

But these modern alt arts are going to crash 90% because there are pretty much infinite of them with the economy starting to crash and millions of people losing their jobs. Shining Charizard is a true investment piece in the hobby because in 2002, nobody was investing in Pokemon. In 2020-2023 50 million people were "investing" in Pokemon thinking the economy would go up forever. Unfortunate.

The single card market is too volatile, if investing is your thing then you are way better off investing in sealed products like Booster Boxes, you might have to wait 3 to 5 years before you start seeing reasonable gains, but it’s far less risky compared to cards.

Not worried at all. These cards are the real true amazing arts of pokemon in general. This is just going through a seasonality cycle. Should curve back up as the consolidation looks to be done for most of these. It was a 2 month drop. Seems like people are going to load up and turn it around. Sell in May and go away. Summer months everything takes a hit. I do love watching all the youtube venders that have been making videos for months "Huge Deals" buying alt arts at 70% and pumping hard but now that they dropped a little wont even make offers. They drop a little and now all the sudden they are too "volatile and risky" to buy. If they shoot back up to towards $1000 again they will gladly pay you $650 and flip them at the same show to the person behind you. Just funny how that works even when they could now pay $300 for the same card they don't want to risk it but you should risk letting it go for $650 when it could be $1250 next week on the up.

Gengar going from 400 to 300 still makes it an expensive one though. Same goes for the Umbreon, Lugia etc. So yeah there is an artificial increase which got corrected now. But the chase is still there since the chance of pulling it doesnt increase at a sudden. Also it is summer time. These cards arent ever going to die out. If you want one of these cards you could open 20+ booster boxes ans not get one. So buying 1 at a fraction of the cost is a no brainer. I opened 24 boxes of TWM and didnt get 1 carmine. I got everything else x3. So no matter what to me buying that card for a few hundred in a 10 is worth it. Not everyone hurts durint a recession. Some actually make way more. Its like a seesaw. Psa 10 in a gengar vmax is 600 thats a good chunk of change for a poke card thats 2 years old. The ungraded and 9s are alot more volatile.

I'm incredibly surprised it took this long. All the math guaranteed the market was going to crash.
