You kind of have to assume it'll go the distance it does when you strike it well when choosing your club though, because it's very rare you can afford to be 20+ yards long, but you can usually afford to be 20+ yards short. Also if you take extra club the fear of going long also plays on your mind. For example when I strike my 7 iron well in summer conditions I hit it about 185. But that'll be like one out of six or seven shots that are struck that well lol but I still have to assume it will be one of those.
