I first saw this type of alternating staircase in a Norwegian show renovating summer houses. In Norway they apparently call it ""sambatrappe" (samba stairs), which I thought was kinda cute.

Are these building code compliant, whether to a loft, attic, or unfinished cellar?
@TopTreadStairways11 ай бұрын
Yes, they are code-compliant if a person builds them correctly. i’ll be happy to send you a copy of the Visual illustration of the building code if you send me your email address. My email is toptreadstairways@gmail.com

@TopTreadStairways do they classify as stairs? According to building code if your loft is accessible by stairs you get taxes for extra sqf.. if it's accessible by ladder it is not. I wanna build a "ladder" that functions as stairs..

@AInimatedArt-l7g me too. Are you in USA? I have old cottage, downstairs 8 foot, upstairs will be 6'3" . Ship's ladder will look more fitting. I don't think UK tax will vary on ladders vs stairs for us. I would only pay more council tax if upstairs is classified as "living space" ie bedroom or kitchen. An office or occasional room is not living so exempt from building regs. But I will do all I can for light, insulation, smoke alarms, emergency exits etc.

@OliverTwist-vv4xh yeah I'm in the USA. Kinda digested with the taxation of how they classify our homes so I'm looking for loop holes

Thanks for sharing. Have you ever built an alternating tread device for an rv? To get from the inside to a rooftop deck?
@TopTreadStairways Жыл бұрын
No, I haven’t, but I’d love to build one for you. Let me know the overall rise and send me a picture of the location you hope to install it. My email address is toptreadstairways@gmail.com

What is the angle of ripid upstairs?
@TopTreadStairways3 ай бұрын
I don’t know what ripid means. The ship ladder is 64° and the alternating tread is 57°. The conventional stair is 37°.

What kind of wood?
@TopTreadStairways2 ай бұрын
We make our stairs out of more than 40 different species of wood. The ones pictured here from left to right are: knotty alder, Poplar stringers with plywood treads, and pine stringers with plywood treads.

Is the front of the tread on the Alternating Tread Device weak and does it ever splinter off? How thick is it, it looks an inch and a half.
@TopTreadStairways19 күн бұрын
That’s something I think about a lot. We always consider the size of the tread when recommending a thickness. Thankfully, we have never had an alternating tread break. We recommend making the treads a minimum of 1.25 to 1.75 inches thick but occasionally for a narrower stair, we will build them 1 inch thick.
