I love it as well but the location gives me the heebies. I don't know anything about the area she is living in but something equivalent in the U.S. would have roving bands of homeless and miscreants camping around. I wouldn't feel safe without multiple guard dogs, weapons, and perhaps a locked dock area separate from the road.
@Chanel95-d6u9 ай бұрын
@@teesmith501 I’ve moored on the Grand Union many, many times. Yes, you’re right, it can be risky. There are some strange characters on the canal. I wouldn’t want to be moored up alone. Rubbish can be an issue, as can vandalism. You have to approach getting a narrow boat very carefully. Much better as weekend retreats out of town, than full time homes. Especially with kids. You’re moored on a public right of way - most people use the towpaths to walk their dogs and go for a stroll, but you need to be on the alert.

Indeed, it's not a narrowboat. It's too wide to fit in most of the canals in the UK. Worth the trade off though. Wider boats are more stable in the water. Narrowboats rock from side to side easily.

Hardly stress free! Always lots to do. Do you have to take your toilet to a pump out? Navigate frozen muddy paths to get to the roads in Winter? Worry about who’s on the tow path late at night? And yes, there are some strange people on the canal; at some point most people mooring on the towpath suffer vandalism. I love the canal, but let’s not get too carried away with some romantic idealism. And Winter on the canal can be hard graft! Fine if you’re in the safety of a marina, with electric link up and water - but that’s expensive, and so are residential moorings - with or without link ups.

A box fan blowing the hot air from the stove down the hallway towards the bedrooms would solve the cold issue, plus you need ventilation and heat in all areas to prevent mold. People would argue the fan is too cold in the winter, but when there’s heat being blown from the hot stove it isn’t cold. I found that out when I had baseboard heating, my box fan was running and the heat circulated around my apartment very quickly. Another tip is to use slow cookers in the winter as they kick out an amazing amount of heat into a small area when you’re making homemade soups and stews etc.

in the summer it looks like paradise, but through the winter the boat is cold and condensation is a constant worry, i lived on a canal boat on the grand union for two years, and waking up in winter with the outside temperature at --10C / 14F, and the inside temperature was --5C / 23F, with as she said ice on the inside of the windows, is not so much fun. and yes, it was fully insulated, but with half the boat sitting in cold water you find the insulation doesn't help.
@Chanel95-d6u9 ай бұрын
Yes, books, clothes and soft furnishings can get damp. And mooring is becoming increasingly impossible - much more bureaucratic on the canals than it used to be… we continually cruised, too. Wardens used to turn a blind eye to you staying in one place for a while, but now they’re hot on your trail. Beautiful in the Summer, but cold overnight in the Winter, and moorings near shops and facilities are increasingly hard to find. Barney used to be our coal man on the Grand Union - dropping off our coal as he came through on his traditional working barge. You have to be pretty reliant on having some knowledge of boat mechanics, and be prepared to cycle or walk everywhere. Most canal boats are FAR narrower than this wide beam! A beautiful looking boat. So well thought out. I wonder how she manages to continuously cruise and get the kids to the same school - that must be a big issue…

What a lovely person! boats stunning too. Must be wonderful waking up / going to bed on her and a change of scenery every two weeks makes it perfect.

I was going to do this, but decided to buy 14 acres of land in Nth Cumbria. I'm glad I didn't go the boat route, as I've woodland, orchards and natural builds, all for a ⅓ of what Jen's spent. She's done a cracking job though, and it's a better form than a narrowboat.

Such a sweet lady! And cute little feet, scampering around on the boat. Her kids should be very proud and excited to grow up in this home. They are definitely living the good life!❤❤❤

Nicely done and 12ft wide!!! You have made a good choice to go bigger. The cost was very easy to deal with and for that you got a very liveaboard boat. Good luck in your future plans and destinations!!! My wife and I used to spend a great deal of time on our 34ft Sea Ray sedan bridge---it's a great way to live!!! From South Carolina, USA.

This is great& they get dressed round the fire, as I did as a child in the 60’s, not all central heated & spoilt as kids are today. What a great experience for kids to grow up in& no telly!! ❤️🙏

Its looks very nice. There is a huge amount of space on the roof and those solar panels are tiny. A few much bigger ones would likely mean that she wouldn't need to run the engine during winter as much. I wonder how well the boat was insulated as well - maybe better insulation would result in a more comfortable space for a larger amount of the year.
@redwolfexr Жыл бұрын
yeah, more panels and a blower assisted diesel heater are called for here.
@Chanel95-d6u9 ай бұрын
@@redwolfexr Diesel heaters are expensive to run though, and depending on mooring location, diesel may well not be accessible very easily. Solar panels are a great idea, although vandalism on the towpaths is unfortunately always an issue…
@redwolfexr9 ай бұрын
@@Chanel95-d6u depends on your definition of expensive. Diesel is much cheaper than propane for pure heating. More importantly you heat the smallest area you can. Even a blanket wall holds in a ton of heat.
@Chanel95-d6u9 ай бұрын
@@redwolfexr Yes, have used a blanket wall - it’s amazing how much difference blankets or thick curtains can make. I can’t comment on the propane/ diesel options as I haven’t looked into propane, except for hot water and cooking.Theres always something more to learn…

OMG, so adorable and cute....and I love what you've done with the boat! Sadly I'm on the other side of the pond, as I love a good massage. Bless you and your kids Jen, Austin :)

What a lovely home and thank you for showing your home to the world. I live in Kentucky in the USA and we have several rivers where your home would be just lovely. Best wishes and I bet a massage in your work space is the best. If I ever make it over to the motherland I will book one session.

The motherland is the country in which your ancestors were born. Which country do you mean?
