At 5:15 you mention that because it is NEMA 3R it can be installed inside or outside. I notice that it also says online that it is Auto-Rapid Shutdown in accordance with NEC 2017. Can you still be in compliance if installing inside?
@AltEStore
@AltEStore 4 жыл бұрын
Because the optimizers are on the back of the panels, that is what does the module level shutdown. It doesn't care if the inverter is inside or outside.
@marcustaylor3943

@@AltEStore Ok thank you, I thought the inverter would be required to be placed outside so that the power company or firemen could use the disconnect switch at the bottom if an emergency required them to disconnect power. It seems from another video of yours that a disconnection or knife-blade box could be placed outside of the building to disrupt the connection between the breaker panel and inverter to meet that requirement while the inverter is inside. Thanks again!

The company I have hired to put an installation on my roof in a few weeks -- I think it's spec'd at 7.8kW -- strongly suggested using the previous generation (non-HD) Solaredge inverter. The one on my estimate is a SE6000a. They said they'd happily install either but that the never HD models have some serious reliability problems. Is that true? Anyone have an opinion?

So for this model you can have 2 inputs, do the 2 inputs from the Panels have to be coming in on the same DC voltage?
@AltEStore
@AltEStore 4 жыл бұрын
Because the SolarEdge inverter is connected to the Optimizers, the voltage coming in will actually be about the same, even if you have more on one string than the other. The amps will be different. As long as you meet the minimum and don't exceed the maximum lengths, they don't need to be even.

The output AC power will be clipped at its rated power, where does it clips actually? Is it during the conversion during the total DC power into AC power or before the DC power reach the DC-AC Converter? We would like to do research on the performance of different types of module and we found out that optimizer is quite a good method to analyze their individual performance. Will the clipping affect the collected individual data of each module?
@carultch
@carultch 3 жыл бұрын
What ends up happening when the AC power clips, is that the MPPT algorithm deliberately seeks a higher voltage than the maximum power point. Effectively, you "leave sun on the roof" in the form of thermal energy.

Is it just SCRs making the sinewaves like in a VFD?
@AltEStore
@AltEStore 7 жыл бұрын
This is what I get from them, 1) Distributed multi-level switching elements create a sine wave. Powerful DSP processor synthesizes a clean sine wave 2) Less magnetics are required for filtering 3) Highly efficient design with minimal heat loss reduces cooling requirements
@carultch
@carultch 3 жыл бұрын
It is still making a stepped waveform, through the DC-to-AC digital switching, just with more levels of steps instead of "all or nothing" pulses like the previous generation of inverters. This enables them to reduce the "size" of the capacitor and inductor banks that are used in the filtering of the wave, to condition the waveform to match the sine wave of the grid. There still is this filtering that is needed, just a lot less of it.

Is there an off-grid application for this? I know for my house, I will have to change a few things. Especially my electric tankless water heater. I already have an idea to install solar panels to heat up the water. And have the tankless to add to that solar heat, if needed.

Since I found out my SolarEdge Equipment is useless, "bricked" by dysfunctional connection terminals on both units, and am now reading the warranties (useless) and learning what my options are, I'm recommending to anyone who cares to listen, not to buy any of this stuff until they get their parts, quality-control in order. When something breaks, they refer you to someone else or ignore you. You're stuck with $10k worth of junk. The rest of it probably works ok, but if the first piece I touched was defective, what quality control was exercised when sourcing all the little bits and pieces? From my experience, little or none and those parts have flimsy, short, useless warranties or none at all. This is a typical large multi-national corporation, I should have known better. At least Tesla is American made, but you can't buy one, their supply system is six months behind.

Just recently installed 2 - SE7600h-us for a 17kw system. 64 axitec 260 watt solar panels with the dc optimizers integrated into the panels, it was a much faster install than setting the separate units for each panel. The new design looks really nice, I guess honestly the one thing that annoys me is with all the technology in this unit, solar edge still didn't integrate built in wifi into the inverters and still forces you to spend extra money for the zigbee modules to do wireless. The zigbee module system was easy to install and worked fine once we were able to get the master in range of the inverters. Just my 2 cents, Solaredge, why you no put wifi in your new inverters? Love the videos. Thumbs up!

But the quality control keeps getting worse. The unit I bought is defective and they won't do anything about it, except advise me to "ship it back" so they can assess it. The actual warranties you'll deal with when this happens are flimsy and designed to protect them from the poor quality parts they source. All the input terminal blocks on my units (inverter and battery) are mis-cast and won't release a wire once inserted. That sounds stupidly simple to resolve and it is, but Solar edge and LG Chem want nothing to do with it. How many other $1 parts are in critical locations?

The efficiency of the inverter isn't the complete picture, because the inverters are not built to work with power directly from the series strings of modules like your typical inverter. The inverters work in a proprietary combination with the power optimizers, such that the power optimizers do some pre-processing of the power for the inverter. The functionality that would otherwise be in the inverter for adapting its input voltage to track the maximum power point of the modules, is externalized to the power optimizers. It is the combined efficiency of the power optimizers and the inverter that you need to use, when comparing to other brands of inverters.

Unfortunately electric utilities have gotten more aggressive at killing grid tie solar. Many states are killing net metering and even in solar friendly states like California Southern California Edison has a monthly penalty of $8.00 per month for solar costumers. And as soon as they reach 5% solar the pay back will be 2 to 1 instead of the 1 to 1 KWH.It seems the future is off grid.
@AltEStore
@AltEStore 7 жыл бұрын
I think the future in states with unfriendly policies will be self-consumption. So you have a battery store any extra power you make during the day, and then rather than selling it back to the grid for credit, you use it yourself that night. Since solar generation is a little ahead of most consumption, by just storing it for a few hours, you can use it when you need it, and still have the ability to buy the remainder needed power from the grid. This allows you to have a smaller battery bank, making it an affordable option in locations with high electric rates and unfriendly policies, like Hawaii and parts of CA.
@johnpuccetti9383
@johnpuccetti9383 7 жыл бұрын
I am starting to think that separating your solar system from the grid you can avoid any fees and the expense of net metering contacts and required disconnects device expense. I have a deep distrust of electric utilities as when you sell your home the new owner will be forced to sign a new contract at a less attractive deal.
