8 years old might be a bit young to have a reptile. Especially if you’re the one doing the research and not your daughter. I work at a pet store and everyday I see adults buying crickets/ reptile things and I ask them what reptile they have and half the time the response is something along the lines of “my daughters gecko, do you want it? She doesn’t take care of it anymore” well yea cause you got your 8 year old a lizard. What did you think would happen

It's a family pet and I do a majority of the care for the animal. It's well taken care of thanks to videos like this and research I've done. I appreciate your concern though.

Will it not dry out the tank. I also have a uvb light. I'm constantly spraying down the tank. If I'm not home for those days. Any suggestions. My substrate is coconut husk with sphagmoss mixed in. I use a wifi thermometer that also has a cooling circuit, and attached to that circuit is a super cheap fan I got on amazon which is essentially a speed controller and a 120MM computer case fan. Heating circuit is to a pad on the back of the tank, and then the day bulb is on a timer. Whole system keeps itself in a pocket temp of about 4 degrees + or - 76, and I get an alert if it drops below the threshold temp I set of 67 so if Im out of town I can send someone to investigate.

One thing I had a question about that has been difficult to get answers on is that my family has a new juvenile crested gecko. We have a 12x12x18 tank with mesh top. It has been in the low 50s here and house cools down to 62 at night. We're using a uv heating bulb on top and temp inside shows low 60s (although we have only cheap stick on thermo/humidity meter with dials) and I notice humidity drops really fast with lamp on. Is 40% humidity or lower in the morning when I wake up too low? I'm asking mainly because I haven't noticed the gecko being active hardly at all and haven't seen much poop on the paper towels. We've only had the gecko for 3 days and I'm committed to raising an awesome gecko. Any advice would be huge. Thanks a million.

Hi! I know this isn't relevant to the current topic although it was very helpful. But I was wondering if you could keep a baby Crested Gecko in a 18×18×18×18×24 terrarium and just have that for the entirety of its life? I might be getting a baby crestie soon and I'd like to know if that'd be alright or if I should go with something smaller. I also live in Canada, and winter/fall is really cold here so which one would you recommend? The Ceramic heat emitter seemed like it'd be pretty efficient.
@AltitudeExotics4 жыл бұрын
Yes you can! Many people will tell you a cage that size is to big for a baby and they won't be able to find their food, though this is completely false. Yes, the ceramic heaters hooked up to a thermostat are one of the best options!

If my house sits at 22-24C during the day and only falls to 20C at night, should I even worry with heating my cresties? I have day bulbs in minidomes on dimming stats on them, heating half their vivs to 24-25C and cool end is 21C but their tank is ambient anyway without heat at room temp
@hobin_rude Жыл бұрын
Perfect temperatures. No extra heating needed. 24 is their sweet spot but they tolerate 16-33 without any discomfort. Anything higher than 25 is related to increased metabolic cost which is proportional to the ambient temperature. This will make them more active, but may affect their longevity in the long run. Remember that in nature they get a period of rest in the winter. It isn't dormancy but their metabolism slows down significantly over that time.

Uvb can be used but know the food ( Pangea, rapashie are the best) have uvb supplements in them so that means you could use them but only for a short while. You can however used a plant growth light or a regular led bar light throughout the day. It helps then tall day form night as they are a crepuscular gecko meaning more active during the Dawn and dusk. Also do not use red light with a gecko the can see the red light and it will mess up their day/night cycle.

Absolutely enough! Temperature often drops below 60 in their natural habitat during winter on southern hemisphere. Occasional snowfall has been reported in New Caledonia as well. Remember that climate graphs report temperatures of the coastal areas. Deeper inland, where cresties live is usually 5 degrees cooler. I absolutely discourage using any additional heat source for them.

@AltitudeExotics2 жыл бұрын
The main difference between 80 in your house and 80 NC is in the wild the geckos are free to burrow into the soil, find a moist pocket in a tree or otherwise seek out a cooler spot in the forest. In a cage they have no where to go and little ability to self regulate their temp.

Climate graphs for New Caledonia are based on data from the weather station at Noumea Airport which is on the coast. Deeper inland, up in the hills it is usually 5 degrees cooler.
