Altius transports two gantry cranes from Rotterdam to Vigo (TERMAVI)

Altius completed the transport project of two large gantry cranes, weighing 830 tons each, onto a heavy-lift vessel. Discharge operations took place at TERMAVI Container Terminal in Vigo (Spain).
Both Portcranes, owned by Grupo Davila, were shipped from Rotterdam, where ALTIUS was in charge of installing internal reinforcements on the gantry cranes and all additional preliminary preparations prior to loading operations.
ALTIUS rose to the challenge by supplying all engineering, coordination, planning, project management, steel, manpower and required auxiliary machinery in order to achieve safe transportation of this special cargo.
Since the preliminary stages of this project, technical departments at ALTIUS and BIGLIFT worked together to define and calculate all involved operations and technical aspects of this transport.
It has been quite a complex transport operation due to the critical lifting stability, lifting height and tight stowage on board.
Despite the fact that the Portcranes were not manufactured to withstand sea-transport, ALTIUS came up with a technical solution to possibilitate such sea-transportation. By installing a specially designed internal reinforcement to strengthen the Portcranes´ structure, they were able to withstand the forces during the sea-voyage. A total amount of 80 tons of steel were required for this purpose.
In addition, ALTIUS fitted specially designed “lifting trunnions” on the Portcranes in order to enable loading and discharge operations of both units by the ship’s cranes in LO-LO basis.
With this achievement, ALTIUS reaffirms its ample experience and capabilities on Portcrane relocations & sea-transport around the world in all transport modalities, either RO-RO or LO-LO.
