We have been rv'ing in Australia for sixteen years. We have fantastic beaches and would take our three kids camping every Christmas. They came with us until they were 25 and we would have the best happy hours. We had a camper trailer which meant we could comfortably sleep the five of us adults. We have just purchased a new Avan which is an 'A' frame and similar in style to the one you reviewed. It is being built and hopefully we will have for Christmas for a trip to the beach just above Coffs Harbour.
@Weretherussos8 жыл бұрын
+Peggy McCrystal we've never seen the Avon, but have checked out a couple of those A frames. Hope you get yours soon and enjoy the trip to the beach!

My concern about the Alto would be the ruggedness of the shell. With the two pieces sliding close to each other, I can see with rough roads, eventually they would twist and bind. I looked at it during my trailer hunting and settled on a small one piece fiberglass trailer that has performed well even on rough roads.
@Weretherussos7 жыл бұрын
Kait's uncle who owns this hasn't had any problems with it and they take it on some rough roads...but I think for what you'r doing the one piece fiberglass rig is a better bet.
@garyd56227 жыл бұрын
I am glad to hear that her uncle has been trouble free. I had a pop up for 15 years and babied it at best as possible but still the roof leaked after 10 years. With trailers being the price that they are and amount that they are used, I try hard to stay on top of potential problems. Your video gives a good review of the unit.

This is cool. I think the key selling point is also that it can be rolled into a regular garage when the top is retracted. This would save a lot of money for people who lives in an HOA community that doesn’t allow RV parking on driveway.

Such a nicely-done presentation. Just a short intro, you were inside in 33 seconds, the filming was good, the spiel was organized and clear, almost all the questions people have asked were answered in the video. You both speak clearly and were delightful to listen to. You did a good job showing what this unit is all about. I really enjoyed looking at this.

I arranged a tour of one by an owner in the Dayton area. Was set up by the company that built them. Spent a few hours with the owner , who gave a great tour. Having been in the RV biz for many years , my main concern was the lift system that worked well but if I remember right , had no manual override if there was an issue with power lift and no easy access to lift mechanism. And not inexpensive to repair. Seemed well built(still travel trailer quality) but lift would keep me away......

We looked at these last year at the show. There were visible gaps between the walls of the sliding roof and the main body of the trailer I could actually poke my fingers through. That wouldn't appear to make it water tight. The toilet seems a bit silly. People are sitting down eating, while you're standing beside them taking a leak? There are plenty of teardrop shaped trailers that have lots of headroom, without a sliding roof - especially at that price range. Frankly, I think it answers a question no one asked. But if it works for you, that all that matters.

Thanks for the great video! We are on the list, and your video sold us! Things that we are looking forward to: 1) can pull with a Honda Odyssey (don't have to have a bigger rig), 2) Outdoor Shower, 3) small indoor toilet (wish it was composting), 4) Solar power build in! We don't want an indoor shower. Love the pop-up hard shell. In the PNW, where it rains a lot when you camp, canvass pop-up get moldy and musty as we have found when looking for used ones. Can HARDLY wait!!!

If you was a more useful /private inside shower/toilet, you want the next model up: Alto Safari Condo 1723 (about $2500 more). It has a toilet/shower cabinet wet bath with a pull around shower curtain like a claw foot tub does. Still not totally private, but it has to fit in my parking breeze way that only has a 7 ft foot height. With the roof down, it just fits (the reason I had to skip other models)

I was just researching the Alto 1713 and came across this video. Nice, but awfully expensive for what is there. The reason I was looking was one of my neighbors with his daughter had to go to Missouri to pick up his granddaughter and great granddaughter who were relocating to Virginia from the Northwest. She was traveling on I-70 about 25 miles from Kansas City pulling this very same unit with a RAV4 that was purchased at the same time as the Rv. All of the sudden a gust of wind pushed the RV sideways, taking the RAV4 with it. She was able to get stopped. A Missouri Highway Patrol car was behind her and get the whole thing on video. The female Highway Patrol woman tried to calm her down. To no avail. They got them to a hotel and she called her mother. She did not see the video. But the Officer did send it to her mother. I saw the video this weekend and she is extremely lucky. The Highway Patrol told her mother and grandfather that due to these units being so light, they highly recommend drivers proceed slower than the posted speed and have extra weight due the high winds that just come out of nowhere in Missouri across the highways.

jmarylastone I worked on a documentary film project for two months. There were three of us sharing one large RV. On the very first day we established a rule:that the bathroom was for pee and shower only, not for the other thing. Don't matter the size of the RV it just seems very odd to do that sharing that space with others the sound and smell no thank you. Far too many clean restrooms seems to be a Starbucks at nearly every highway offramp these days. The other funny thing about big RVs, when you go to a show they always promote that an RV will sleep six people or eight people or even 12 people. While it's true you can actually manage to sleep eight people in a standard RV maybe a few more peoplecan sleep on the floor as well. The problem is after two days all of those people will be enemies and ready to kill each other. Cohabitation sounds great on paper but try sharing a 9' x 32' space with 12 people. Good luck!

I think 17 is fair. They are obviously aiming to sell to enviroMENTAL types. This is America, they can charge what they want if there is the demand. I admire the innovation and design, but thank God I have more sense than to spend that kind of money on a small camper. I'd pay more and upgrade my vehicle, before I'd downgrade campers to pay more. Not insane at all. There is a one and a half year waiting period, so it seems like the price could be higher. The market determines the value, of course. Now if it was one-tenth the price, I would go for it... and could at that price.

I found outstanding the roof mechanism.... however, will the customer need that feature when is camping at 100km from the closest power point?

Dwight DAYMEN I think it's a fisheye lens
@leethstarwatcher8 жыл бұрын
Dwight DAYMEN yes it's a fish eye lens which distorts the edges of the image (curving) while taking in a wider viewing field. It makes the inside look larger than it is. Note they don't use a fisheye outside the trailer.
@fixman888 жыл бұрын
Dwight DAYMEN I figure he used it so you could see everything more easily; in a camper that small there's a limit to how far you can back up to get everything in frame.

30k?? What a rip off. The mark up in the country is nuts. Prob cost 8k to produce. Price it right and it might make sense.

The raising system on the roof seems seriously inefficient. Better to have it built raised and save the motor system which will break down at the most inconvenient opportunity.

I am new to micro caravans, but the profile of this unit when fully open doesn’t seem huge at all. And the tear shape at the front is largely unchanged when the roof is fully engaged so figuring there wouldn’t be that much difference to wind resistance when being towed?? So, given that - the level of complexity for the opening roof could be negated by having it as one static unit with all those wonderful windows, for a very marginal wind resistance increase? Or am I reading the physics all wrong Prob the best mini caravan I have seen in my research though . Just so different and innovative .

For $27 grand you can buy a nice 30ft with FULL bathroom & shower, full kitchen & full size fridge, and enough room to sleep 8 adults or 16 midgets.
@Weretherussos8 жыл бұрын
+Grandpa the Grey I assume you're referring to a 30' trailer. Yes, but the big draw is the small package of this trailer that can be towed with just about anything. A 30' trailer is either going to be a 5th wheel or travel trailer that requires a full size truck to tow which is going to cost even more.
@ameliar27578 жыл бұрын
You can get a nice 18 ft trailer that weighs around 3,000lbs towable with a typical suv.

very cool far better than any hotel you cant resell a hotel after youve visited it you can this!! youd get a portion of that 27k back after having a good time!! most hotels in london cost £200 per night some as much as £500 that isnt too many nights in a hotel with full amenities? is it? this would give you enjoyment for years!! actually save you money!! cmon wake up dozey commenters!! cant even buy a long wheel base 4wd landrover for that!! & go camping wild!! i camp wild often have never yet paid to use a campsite and stealth camp thats free you cant beat free!!

We're the Russos yes there are beginning to be many players now in this pod mkt or teardrop design mkt i see it as a trend at mo winnebago do a great design also not extendable roof like this one but static roofline but very strong stout caravan and it has top spec air con and storages im sort of struck between the nicety of having windows on all sides this is great to immerse yrself in nature however i dont know much about weatherproofness or thermal ability of its extendable sides? the traditional winnebago one sandwich gel coated laminated timber alu frame construction is looking better in a gale storm or blizzard at dealing with that kind of weather which is more prevalent here has excellent antenna mast too and aircraft quality fitout insided full convection oven and fridge freezer full recharge & control panel winnebago are beginning to get into this mkt now also offering pretty sound strong solid build quality!!

Sherry Miller I would have to agree. I picked up a 10 year old 25ft Airstream classic for 25k. But you need a half ton to pull it.
@marlenem83155 жыл бұрын
When you were showing the trailer, you mentioned a 5gallon propane tank. I think you ment 20 gal. It would make no sense to only be 5 gal. The trailer is pretty nice except the toilet. They need a roof on that that gets larger when opened up. Then add a shower too. That might make a winner in my book, except for high price. Needs to drop by 10,000 at least.
@vincentsenecal32738 жыл бұрын
Nice but too expensive for what it brings
@largol33t17 жыл бұрын
Look at the Airstream Basecamp trailer. It's in the same price range but has a lot of wasted space. You can't even remove the seats to take advantage of the rear door on the Airstream camper. If I had to pick between the two, I'd get the Safari, hands down.
@HeAndSheRV7 жыл бұрын
The seat blocking the Airstream Basecamp rear door is just a cushion on a couple of small boards, and it is definitely removable so that you can come and go through the rear door. I've toured them and adjusted all the seating and tables. At $38k, pretty expensive, but cute for outdoors recreational people.

Yikes, what could go wrong with that opening roof? And what would that cost to repair? To make that trailer usable, you have to raise the roof pretty much every time you park. Just like when windshield wipers freeze to a windshield when it's frosty, will this thing work if it's below freezing?
@canthisbefelt8 жыл бұрын
Chose this unit because of all the windows and the fact that you can choose between twin beds or a queen....those options are just not to be found in a unit this size.
@taylorward29208 жыл бұрын
That was going to be my question- instead of twins can you make it a queen bed. So thanks for the answer. How are you liking your trailer? We've been looking at tiny homes and I like this because of how much less weight it would be.
