In this scene, my dears, we observe that, following Altrincham's (John Heffernan) encounter with Queen Elizabeth (Claire Foy), he ardently champions the monarchy's endurance through inclusivity, modernization, and heightened visibility.

This is when the working royal came into play. Her mother even said "gloves on" as they met the commoners.

"The Church of England does not recognise divorced persons." That's funny because the Church of England was started because King Henry VIII sought to divorce Catherine of Aragon. The Pope refused. Henry formed his own church in 1534 and granted himself a divorce 😂

Exactly!! I've been saying that for years! You know what would've been the coolest thing? Edward VIII should have just started his own Church of England (Edward faction), fired all the clergy, forced all of England to convert all over again, and solemnised his own marriage! 😂😂😂

While the irony is indeed apt, I must point out that Henry VIII sought an annulment*, not a divorce. Divorce is when a recognised marriage comes to an end whereas an annulment states that the marriage was never valid in the first place.

The Church of England still does consider marriage sacred and not to be broken. My cousin was a minister in the Church. His marriage failed - when the children became adults his wife cleared out. When the bishop found out my cousin was sacked. The Bishop didn't even wait for the divorce.

His first suggestion to stop debutante balls was exactly the first change that happened. And how many people got fucked by that divorced rule? Elizabeth should know this after seeing Margaret.

Princess Margaret also thoroughly endorsed the idea of dispensing with debutants being presented at court. As far as I can remember she made a remark to the effect that "every tart in London was turning up".

It was a practice fraught with corruption. The rules at the time for debutantes was that you needed to be presented by someone who was also presented previously (that is most of the time an aristocrat herself). Due to the declining wealth of the aristocracy, it became a practice for aristocratic women to agree to present a debutante in exchange for money.

Everything else was eventually done, but she never really allowed anyone to know the real 'her'. Thats why the first 2 seasons were such a success, they were raising the curtain on a little bit of who she was, fictional, of course, but there was an appetite in the audience to get to know Queen Elizabeth.

I remember this episode(sort of) and I just thought she was coming off so arrogant. I get she is the queen and its duty but she claims that she does this for her people and the country but when the people want to be heard and inclusive, getting of the whole rule about divorce, etc, she doesn't want to listen. Those traditions that she values have been stuck since what? Tudor times? And she gets mad that people are telling her they want to be seen by her and change because those traditions are not working for the modern times.

@@GA-wq8xq the british royal family was able to stay around because of their ability to embrace modernity. Otherwise as a French i'd suggest a much more drastic solution than "uh maybe show a tiny bit of respect to the people who are funding your lavish lifestyle" :D

He should have reminded her that the royal family has long been willing to be flexible when they saw the need. Her grandfather changed the family name to Windsor to avoid anti-German sentiment during WWI. That could not have been easy for him, but he did what he had to do to survive. Most of the royal houses in Europe didn't survive that war, including his royal cousins.

@@GA-wq8xq He was i no way a prick, frankly he treated her far more respect and deference than I would in the same situation. He even said it himself, he's in favour of the monarchy, and he wants to see it continue, so it HAS to modernise. And HE WAS RIGHT - not Elizabeth, not the Queen Mother, not Tommy Lacelles- they were living, every one of them, in an ivory tower, yearning for an imagined past that was never coming back. And for his service to them and to the nation, he was treated with contempt. "Let people get to know you" "I don't wish to be known" "You gave up that choice the moment you sat in that chair" is what I would have said.

All of these changes in Britain and the Monarchy happened either before I was born or early in my childhood. What's more, I'm an American and didn't really become aware of the reality of European people [the Tom or Pierre or Mario or Hans on the street] until I was stationed there in the US Army in the 80s. Before that, I knew they existed but only in a vague 'over there' sort of way. Claire Foy is a wonderful actress, but I have no idea how well she portrayed Young Queen Elisabeth II. From common opinion, she did very well. I can well see HM bristling at Altrincham's suggestions. On the one hand she feels like The Monarchy is intruding itself into her family life, with courtiers and PM criticizing every move she and Phillip make. On the other hand she is trying to be a bastion of traditional 'normality' adrift in a sea of social changes that have kept the Royal Family in a turmoil since 1900.
