In this video I'm comparing various methods of tracking out beats from the Akai MPC 2000XL using Logic Pro X. The focus of this video is to compare the DAW's ability to capture the groove and synchronization of the MPC using MTC sync and MIDI import. I provide the results of this test at the end of this video for you to judge for yourself.
Additional Technical Notes:
MIDI Interface: Yamaha UX96 USB
Synchronization Type: Midi Time Code
MTC Frame Rate: 25
Pre Roll: 2 Bars

Thanks for your info, Altruwest. I use Reaper DAW with my MPC 2000xl as a master using midi time code, it's rock solid and never had a timing issue. I usually make separate tracks in the mpc for the kick, snare, hi-hats, etc. then say it s a 4 bar loop, when i'm done making the pattern i add 1 bar to the beginning of the the sequence, this gives Reaper a chance to "catch up" with the midi time code. Believe me everything fall right in time, just remember to set the same BPM in Reaper as your BPM in the MPC 2000xl and you're golden. I enjoy your videos and the knowledge and insights you offer, PEACE!

Thanks for your feedback on this video fam. MTC uses Song Position Pointers to synchronize sequencers. Its because of this factor that MTC does not require a tempo, because it always uses an absolute time reference as opposed to a Beat based reference. MIDI Beat Clock on the other hand always requires a matched tempo setting because the tempo creates a relative timing which will change the over all song positioning. Each DAW seems to respond differently as well, so thats another factor to consider with this test. We only used Logic Pro X however we can expand on this test using other DAWs to compare as well.

To my ears the reference track is the only one that has my head nodding. MTC is robotic and straight. The imported midi data track retains some of the groove but I think logic is messing with it a correcting it to its own grid? Correct me if I am wrong? I am starting to wonder if sync is really necessary when tracking out from my mpc.... Put a bar of straight kicks at the start of each track so you can drag them all in place after the recording and then apply FX etc..... Very interesting subject thanks for the informative video
@Altruwest
@Altruwest 4 жыл бұрын
The best way to track out is always without any sync, just using the MPC master clock. I use the MPC metronome for alignment in Logic Pro which works just like the method you described with kicks. The midi based sync options are generally sought after for those that are looking for the quickest way to track out a beat without having a multitrack audio interface setup. Thanks for checking out the video and leaving some thoughts! God Bless

@@Altruwest Hey, man. I tried this metronome / click track method but even the click track is not consistent, e.g. the clicks are not perfectly on the grid because there's some jitter going on. How can I line up my tracked out sounds accurately when my reference clicks are not exactly in the same place for every track? Is the 2000XL timing so shaky by default?
@JamBurglar
@JamBurglar Жыл бұрын
This is the method I've used (which requires no midi at all). I'll usually put the same hi-hat sound at the beginning of every track on the MPC (so I can use that sound as a reference to line everything up once recorded). Then record the whole song, one track at a time. Then I line up all the hi-hats in the DAW. That seems to work. Maybe because the MPC's timing is solid. I've heard this won't work on an SP 1200 though.

so my setup is logic as master controlling my 2000xl in a handshake style. i've used both mtc and midi clock, havent seen big differences. i will add that i use an additional blank 2 bar sequence in the xl at the same tempo as my main sequence as kind of a "lead in" before i record each track. it allows for the two to latch to each other before the main pattern sets in, then once it's all dumped i can clip out the empty first 2 bars in logic. sounds janky but it's easy and works.

I figured out that I can save my sequences into midi file type 0 or 1 and I read online that midi file type 1 saves all my tracks into different tracks, when importing into Logic. But what I need to do next? Do I need to switch my 2000xl in slave mode and recording those midi tracks into audio or what? Peace! and shout out from Belarus!

thx 4 the vid . i notice that they "both" were off , the second midi choice was closer to the original (str8 out the MPC) then the Midi Time Code. i use to use a Roland keyboard & link up my MPC2000XL with it (by midi) and everytime after about 30 to 45 seconds into playback , the Roland keyboard would start moving ahead of the MPC's drums. it was so damn frustrating .this was back in 2005. the analog equipment sounded much better then after it went into Sonar (then again, I never learned to synch that either without it off-setting 2 some point/I'm just going on a rant & venting). thanks again for the video !

Yo guys! I figure out how to midi export tracks into logic pro x! First of all, make sure that you record all your tracks on different tracks in mpc, then after you save your programs and sequences and done your arrangement, you can save your sequence (Or sequences, or song) in midi type format 1! It is crucial if you want all of your tracks been exported onto different tracks in LOGIC. To do it so you must hit on your mpc shift+3>Save>Save a Sequence>MIDI FILE TYPE 1, rename the sequence if you want to. Then hit shift+9 and turn on "Receive MMC" on. Then it time to take your card reader and your compact flash card of the mpc. Connect your card reader with your compact flash card and take your midi sequence and drag it in logic pro. You will see all of your tracks in midi. The last step is to create external midi tracks! Right click on those midi tracks that has been exported into logic and choose "New External Midi Tracks" after you create a necessary amount of tracks drag all of your midi tracks onto those new external midi tracks. AND BAM! You can now track out your tracks from the mpc. I know it sounds complicated but it's very simple acctually! Sorry for my bad english, hope it helps! If you guys have any questions about that, write down to me and I try to help you. Peace!

Hey there, thanks for reaching out. This video is primarily addressing legacy hardware that does not support audio export. For newer machines such as MPC One/Live/X, Maschine + etc, exporting would be the easiest and most practical way forward. For legacy machines, realtime tracking is a requirement, hence this video discusses some of the pros and cons of different real time recording methods. Hope that clarifies things.

@@bladefaust148 Yes, you just record the outputs. To your point, you will preserve the swing / groove that way. If you just want the sequence and program (sounds) minus the "2000xl charm" you can just save and export the midi sequence and the drum program(s) and open them up in the MPC desktop software (paid version). I've done it this way. I think you may also be able to do it in the MPC Beats (free) software as well.

If you send the completed song all at once, its usually called a 2-Track or a stereo mix. Stereo mixes are fine if you can do all of your mixing on the MPC. You can only import the MIDI tracks, audio from the MPC cannot be imported to Logic unless you have done some real time resampling inside of the MPC beforehand. You need to record audio from the MPC using the 8 individual outputs. Depending on how many samples/tracks you used, you may not be able to record all of the tracks in one pass simultaneously. You didn't mention if you were running an 8 channel audio snake or not, that part is important.

@Altruwest
@Altruwest 5 жыл бұрын
It all depends on your setup and what format you need the audio in. Since I use a lot of keyboards and synths, I typically have more tracks than I have audio channels which requires multiple passes of tracking to get audio stems. If you only use 8 tracks to make your music, then an MPC with 8 outs and an 8 in audio interface would allow you to record all stems in a single pass without MIDI sync. I have plenty of beats easily surpass the 16 tracks so the MIDI sync is a necessity to get stems for mixing.

Monitor controller outputs go to your speaker inputs. Ideally you wouldn't need a mixer at all if you bought a larger multichannel interface. Check out this article I posted about my multi channel setup for inspiration: altruwest.com/2020/09/24/using-the-uad-apollo-console-with-the-akai-mpc-and-hardware-synths/

@@Altruwest hey could you tell me if I did this wrong. I connected My mpc 2000xl straight to my Scarlett 2i2 inputs but nothing played over my monitors. I connected from my stereo out of the MP to the imputes of the interface. which my monitors are connected to and got no sound. even if I turned the input gains up. So just to make sure my mpc outs were working I just unplugged the monitors from the audio interface and put them into the mpc it worked. not sure why it didn't work when I connected it to he interface?

There is no other reason to use the mpc than as the slave. The feel is magical an takes a average track to higher heights.

Yes you can use any audio interface to track out a beat from the mpc. You may need to use a separate midi interface in order to use midi sync or trigger the MPC via midi.

i imported the midi sequence and can get itto play back on my mpc, but i can't record any audio in logic. can anyone help me with that step? it doesn't show the screen during that part of the video

Do you have an audio interface connected to the computer? Make sure the outputs from your MPC are connected the audio interface first. Then make sure you have an armed audio track open in Logic and record each sound on an individual audio track.

Altruwest, it is not the MPC that has the synch problem with Daws, it is just software algorithm are different from hardware algorithms, if you really want to synch up with no problems you need a professions hardware master clock it will take care of all the code clock drifting of all the synch hardware and software devices.. when you MTC all hardware everything is on time because midi and MTC works together with hardware to hardware hand shaking providing your clocks are set the same... I used time code with analog tape back in the day and everything stayed together with midi hardware devices. one reason Software Daws synch clock are not so compatible with hardware because the software developers really didn't take hardware in mind because they thought the software Daw technology was going to take off and leave hardware behind, now hardware designers are getting smarter and starting with MPC X and live they are adding VST instruments plugins and audio tracks to hardware with good converters, in the future you really are not going to need software Daws, but it is good to have both.. so yes it makes good sense to import your hardware midi seq file to Daw to trigger the sounds.. I even tried to combine hardware seq sounds together with software sounds as a tone generator and the timing was still off.. the only way it will really work is with a dedicated master clock, most mastering engineers use master clocks in their mastering studios.....

I agree, the issue has never been the MPC. Each system that I have used to synchronize MPCs with over the years has its own unique issues with stability in sync. I've used Sonar, Cubase, Pro Tools, Logic and Ableton Live over the past 18 years or so. Pro Tools in my experience had even more issues than Logic Pro. There are now some great synchronization clocks for drum machines available on the market, however they are more expensive than most people are looking to spend out the gate. I tried to make this video about showing some of the different options for sync that are most affordable and accessible to your average MPC user. Thanks for the feedback.

that's true, the very reason I hold on to my hardware particularly samplers.. because you can always sample new sounds, just like the new MPC 2.3 update with auto-sampler you can bring all the great VST instrument into your MPC via keygroup and in addition to the MPC X/LIVE can run VST instruments now I am hoping Akai will allow the MPC to load third party VST instruments even if it just 6 VST instrument at a time would be a good thing.. thanks for the response...
