In Game of Thrones / ASOIAF, is Roose Bolton secretly an immortal being who steals and wears the skins of other people? This isn't even the craziest Game of Thrones theory.

Having read the books I've always identified Roose Bolton as being quite vampiric. In fact the clashes between the Starks and Boltons in history could be tied to the classic battle between Vampires and Werewolves. We've seen George R.R. Martin use influences from other fantasy 'classics' in his books, see Dr. Frankenstein Clegane for further reference. That's how I see it anyhow.

abcdefghij4995 The clues for that are definitely there, and it would work in the timeline. Especially considering when Duncan the Tall died. I just don't see what difference it would make to the story. The only cool thing that I can see that adding to the story is that Bran has always wanted to be a member of the Kings Guard, but can't because of his legs. If Hodor is a descendant of Duncan the Tall then that makes him the son of one of the best members of the Kings Guard ever. Bran might feel like Duncan the Tall whenever he wargs into Hodor, thus making him a member of the Kings Guard.

Like the Direwolves for example; Jon's is Ghost, and Jon himself is a kind of ghost. Lady dies and Sansa stops being lady-like. Bran's is Summer and he's clearly "fighting the winter", so to speak. There's probably quite a few other examples as well.

Roose is one of the most interesting and underrated character in asoiaf. He appears to be a bad guy at first glance but when you dive deeper into the character you see someone who's not just cruel. Since Clash of Kings, I've thought Roose was the "Count Dracula" of Song. Qyburn is "Dr. Frankenstein." Sansa and Sandor (and later Tyrion) are the "Beauty and the Beast." There are plenty of other archetypes, but Roose is one of them. He has no ancestors (this is the most-obvious evidence Roose is immortal), his eyes are like ice, he's pale, he has no emotion, he takes leechings (connection to blood), he speaks softly but everyone listens, he's evil but somehow charmed Ned and Robb Stark into enduring him, the flayed man banners remind me of an impaled man, the Dreadfort is very gothic, Ramsay was conceived by rape beneath a hanged man (overpowering women/sex/death)... George used a knight with a blue star and a giant to make a crack about the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants. It isn't a stretch to think that Dracula might have crept into one of Martin's characters.
@Crust218
@Crust218 9 жыл бұрын
Matthew Williams Magnificent point, and I wouldn't argue with you about that. Consider this quote from the Wiki of Ice and Fire, Ser Patrek's entry: "Patrek of King's Mountain is named after a friend of George R. R. Martin, Patrick St. Denis of Montreal. Patrick is a fan of the Dallas Cowboys football team (whose logo is a blue star), while George supports the New York Giants."

Roose Bolton HAS ancestry. Thousands and Thousand of years of Boltons being Lords of the Dreadfort. First fighting the Starks for a long time, then surrendering when they realized they could not defeat the Starks. Boltons always been loyal bannermen to the Kings in the North and then to the wardens of the north, after Aegon I conquest.Roose is a VERY clever man and he lives always in the REAL world not the one made of dreams and casual forgivness in which Robb Stark lived. Robb was a fool, he managed to jeopardize the North, thus Roose thought something among these lines, quoting Sergeant Cyrus, "It's not my duty to obey the edicts of fools." Robb Stark dig his own grave by accepting the crown. He should had swear fealty to Stannis or Daenarys. Perhaps Roose obtained some magic powers but he is still Roose Bolton.

@fern1009
@fern1009 9 жыл бұрын
He could also be trying to rally the North to face the White Walkers - first by ending a costly war and then gathering his forces to face them. Stannis going North would of course complicate that plan. As he lays beaten and dying to whoever finishes him off, he might launch into a tirade about how he was the only one who could stop the Others (maybe claim to be the Prince that was Promised?), and that without him the realm of men would be destroyed. In addition, the Bolt-On theory is also backed up in part by Roose's conduct. Yes he is cruel, at times unnecessarily it seems, but he is not Ramsay. Why would he insist on the "First Night" custom when there are plenty of whores in Westeros? To ensure a steady supply of bastards perhaps. The series of deaths in his family, his 1st & 2nd wife and their children, could also be his way of controlling his line of descent - like a cold and calculating Crusader Kings 2 player. Don't get me wrong, I still hope someone kills the man in a brutal manner. Unfortunately, he would most likely take such a turn of events in stride...

It's interesting that you mention at the end that we're yet to see another side to Roose, as dichotomies are so much a part of GRRM's characters. We expect the important characters to fall somewhere between an absolute 'good' or 'bad' guy, but I think the fact that this hasn't really happened yet for Roose actually supports the Bolt-On theory quite nicely. Essentially, the Boltons are the most cartoonishly evil characters in the series. Roose disregards honour and loyalty in his quest for greater individual power, backstabbing Robb and flaying his way to the position of Warden of the North. As you said, he shows little emotion; he even chose his wife to get the biggest possible dowry. Ramsay is a sadistic, brain-washing torturer with a penchant for setting the hounds on people who don't please him. He also raped a young girl without so much as a second thought. Even though Ramsay isn't an Other of some kind in the theory, you can see how much Roose has influenced his upbringing; he might even be imitating his father to gain approval as a bastard. Neither of them have any 'good' characteristics to compete with this, they're just straight up baddies. So with that in mind, Roose's unambiguous evilness could be explained by him being an Other of some kind in disguise. He doesn't show any of the human conflicts that GRRM is so keen on because he isn't human.

yeah, the issue is, Ramsay never was with Roose as a child - his mother requested Roose to help her out because Ramsey was being a dick, but he seemingly didn't. And he keeps chiding Ramsey for, well, being Ramsey - whatever nastiness Roose does, is usually out of pragmatism, carefully calculated - Ramsey does it out of enjoyment.
@stars-and-clouds
@stars-and-clouds Жыл бұрын
@@bruhistantv9806 Good point but it wouldn't surprise me if Ramsay started doing what he does to impress Roose since he is already trying too hard to be the heir just as all of Tywin's children hate Tywin but want to impress him all the same (think of how happy Tyrion gets very Tywin compliments him). Since Roose is supposed to be a Tywin of the north figure it would make sense. They all want their dad's approval because in the ruthless world of asoiaf men like Tywin and Roose win and that impresses people, especially impressionable young people. The pleasure Ramsay takes from all of the pain he inflicts is similar to Cercei too. Think of how happy Cercei was when she terrified Sansa regarding marrying Tyrion. Martin's books are full of these parallels between all characters even when they're unrelated.
@DinsRune
@DinsRune 2 жыл бұрын
Roose being an Other (or half-Other) that went rogue and settled down would also tie into your video of how the Others aren't just mindless monsters- they seem to have a culture and emotions, they're just more okay with killing than most humans. Maybe Roose's ruthless behavior leading to a peaceful land is an example of how the Others aren't completely evil, albeit cold-hearted and merciless.

King Dormak Roose respects the Old Ways and is shown to adhere to them quite strictly. He never harms Lord Manderly in Winterfell, even though he knows what a threat he is, refuses to harm Ramsay, both when he is born and when he kills Domeric due to the taboo of kinslaying, and he still upholds the practices of flaying and the first night, even though they have been banned, as that is what tradition demands. The Red Wedding was more of a loophole, as clearly the Old Ways say nothing about turning on a poor king, what with House Bolton's history of previous rebellions against the Starks. To assume that Roose holds himself to a code of conduct any less than Ned does is to miss an interesting and vital aspect of the character.

Show is taking some plot lines in different directions. A ton of characters are cut out for the sake of saving precious screen time, which is completely understandable. I can totally see that they would kill off Boltons in a more straight forward way for this reason and also to not confuse the show watchers. I imagine, in the books Roose will die in a more mysterious way "off-screen" and this theory will seem plausible till the end. I think, a lot of those ridiculous fan theories will never be confirmed/denied directly in the books and fans will be arguing about them long after the books are finished.

Only for the show. The show and books are diverging on so many levels now it's really hard to say the books have been spoiled by the show. There are plenty of characters dead or missing in the show while they're alive (or reanimated) and kicking in the books.

***** Won't push the point as you've got a lot of pages to get through (and 4 & 5 are definitely more of a grind), but you'll see for yourself that there's been a good deal of plot drift between the show and books. Characters who were never introduced in the show, different outcomes of big events, etc. As for this theory, I had never heard of it until seeing this video and found it interesting and creative. I seriously doubt this one is true, but I think the differences between the books and show (and thus the potential for wholly different story arcs or events) are growing exponentially. And get those books read man, TWOW will be out soon enough.

I think you're right regarding the resolution of the main story, but some of the side plots could go anywhere... and it feels like those are so numerous, and are covered in such detail in the books, that represents a big portion of this story. If you've finished the 3rd book, you know the Robb Stark's wife (Jeyne Westerling) is a totally different character and wasn't killed at the Red Wedding. A first-born of the primary heir of Winterfell could still be alive in the books. There are two chapter/perspective characters from AFFC that never appear in the show. Those are potentially big departures, loose ends that the book will have to resolve.

I'd like to see you do a video on the theory about Oberyn poisoning Tywin Lannister. Regarding this theory, Roose does not have 'Other-like eyes'. Roose's eyes are remarkable because they're described as looking like the colour was sucked out of them, like chips of dirty ice. Others have extremely distinctive eyes too, but theirs are nothing like Roose's. They are a bright and startling over-saturated blue that almost glow. While I don't agree with this theory I feel compelled to add that Others aren't actually dead. Wights are re-animated human corpses but Others are live beings. We now know they're made from live human children so that lends itself to the idea that Roose could be something more than what he appears. I doubt it, though.

One of the reasons I enjoy GRRM's stories is the ambiguities, the what-ifs. A story that prompts one to create stories is a work of art. (Great video, BTW, I had never heard that twist before. Roose switching bodies and giving the old one to a credulous mook would explain "his" sudden gullibility to Ramsey in the show.)

This theory actually goes weirdly well with Preston Jacobs’s theory about Ramsay not being his real son. Preston concludes that the chromatic albinism or whatever it is that makes their eyes pale can only be passed down through the female line, which means Ramsay can’t be Roose’s son, but the fact he shares his eyes means he’s the only safe bet Roose has to exchange skins since NONE of his actual issue shared or ever will share his eyes :O

but pale eyes are a bolton trait, passed in their line, and i bet allll my money than almost all rulers of the dreadfort -either red kings or lords- had been men, maybe there had been once or twice or at most thrice a rulling lady but all others were men who passed the trait to their children, and , unless the boltons always in every generation married a cousin or aunt if the trait is passed like you suggest it would have simply dissapeared centuries ago. it has to be passed by men too.

Also Ramsay doing an identity swap with the original Reek could be foreshadowing of this theory: by their nature the Boltons skin people and steal their identity. I fully subscribe to this theory, but in a far less convoluted way; I think Roose and the Bolton's of old were wargs, just like the Starks, but instead of specializing in animals they could warg people. The most powerful among them, maybe Roose himself, could permanently supplant their consciousness into someone, effectively "wearing their skin as cloaks." I always thought the ADwD prologue was a little out of place. Why show Varamyr's fate? By all accounts a meaningless character. Unless it's setting up the reveal of a character with the ability to telepathically snatch bodies, Roose Bolton being the obvious candidate.

What I love about your videos, other than the incredible attention to detail and awesome referencing, is that you don't present these theories as fact. I've watched many videos where the vidder/presenter/notentirelysurewhatthepropernameis says some crazy theory, says "I know, crazy right?! but listen..." and then proceeds to lay down a load of massive assumptions, reference them as if they are now concrete facts, and base all their successive arguments based on very flawed and stretched logic, using their own speculation as truth. you don't do that: you acknowledge that a theory is probably crazy, and based on assumption, but you don't use these assumptions to formulate an argument, you only use what is written in the text as clear evidence. Please keep making these, because you, ser, are awesome! I find myself believing, or at least considering, most of the theories you upload (R+L=J in particular; that video led me to find a fair bit of my own evidence to support it, too!), and I'm massively sceptical. Thanks man, love your videos!

I like this theory a lot. I think its going to be in the books if they come out. There are many clues left for this to be figured out. My favourite from dwd: Roose: Lord Tywin is many leagues from here. He has many matters yet to settle at King's Landing. He will not march on Harrenhal for some time. Aenys: You do not know the Lannisters as we do, my lord. King Stannis thought Lord Tywin was a thousand leagues away as well, and it undid him. Roose: I am not a man to be undone, ser. At 1:25 the info-graphic says that Melisandre used the leeches to kill Joffrey, Renly, and Balon. This was after Renly died, it's Robb, not Renly. Also, I'm pretty sure she simply predicted the deaths would happen and then did the leech thing to make Stannis believe it was she that caused it.
@AltShiftX

Isn't tywin king of castlemere rock though? That would mean the leeches killed, robb, Joffery, and Twyin. But that's my theory as well that melissandre saw their deaths in her flames then used the leeches so stannis would believe in her powers more. ( plus she has admitted to using tricks quite often to make people believe in her and her Lord of light(
@TheToemeister
@TheToemeister 9 жыл бұрын
becky B 1. Tywin is not a King, he is a Lord. 2. He is Lord of Casterly Rock, you mixed it up with Castamere, which is a castle that he destroyed. 3. The leeches (If they actually did cause the deaths) were meant to kill Robb, Balon and Joffrey. I know this because Stannis literally said their names before he burned each leech. Tywin's death wasn't influenced by the leeches.

There dozens of references to his pale creepy wierd eyes throughout the books. He's also quiet most of the time. There certainly is something to this guy. Starks are also said to have wierd icy eyes and there is also the theory that the Starks themselves might have some kind of White Walker ancestry. Could this also be true of the Boltons? Afterall the Night's King is also said to be a Bolton. I think that direct evidence of this guy being more than a mere mortal is that in Dance With Dragons he burns the corpses of the soldiers found dead at Winterfell instead of burrying them. Could this mean that he knows about the White Walkers and their ability to raise the dead? He also appears to be afraid for the first time in the books.
