I have a south facing patio cover. Ive had a insulated and non insulated cover.For me the difference was night and day. On very hot days i could feel the heat ratiating off of the non insulated cover. The difference was so great that was the #1 reason i even replaced the patio cover. If you have a north facing back yard im sure the heat intensity is far less Just like your home. The south side of your house is going to be warmer than the north in most cases

We moved to a house with non insulated patio, on a 100 degrees weather u can notice the heat coming from the roof that radiates down, so we added an outdoor mister to add comfort.

John Kothapalli There are three main components of heat transfer, convection, conduction and radiation...heat transfer through the insulated ceiling will be lower than the non insulated panels. Because of this there is a higher lower surface temperature in the non insulated panel. This then results in higher radiative heat transfer to people under the patio.

I am resistant to purchasing a product with so much foam in it from an environmental perspective. Added to that, the main issue is radiation and there are much better methods to deal with that. Insertion of a thin layer of reflective aluminum with an air gap would achieve the same results, be much lighter and better for the environment. While aluminum has a super high "embodied energy" figure because of the heat needed to extract it, it can be very effectively recycled ( www.atticfoil.com is where I bought the foil to line my attic and learned about radiant heat barriers ). The other thing that is key is the color and finish. A white roof should heat up less and a polished roof would be best.
