162K views, and only 1.9K likes? People!!! I like your rudimentary work, like stick welding and to repurpose thin copper wire into a multistranded cable. It's cheap but it achieve the same as the more expensive materials. 👌 Greetings from Finland!

This is interesting, I have to wonder if it would be safe do so, to not heat the crucible, but heat the aluminium directly. Having two rods in a cucible and the power flowing through the aluminium, kind of like the inside of a mercury tilt switch.

I would not cut the core, it's pretty easy to cut the secondary and leave the core intact. Plus, you put 3 weld spots (not spot welds), but the rest of the core might not make contact and thus will lose efficiency anyway. Plus those "additional cores that come preinstalled" are probably there to reduce the output power. Since you want more current at the output, I'd remove those. Hope this helps.

Microwave oven transformers are typically only used for half of the AC cycle. There is the filament heater at around 6v and the magnetron cathode that is run through the high voltage diode. Those shims between the primary and secondary affect the inductance of the windings and reduce the current demand. These transformers are NOT designed to be efficient. The eddy currents lost from the welding of the EI core are not really important considering that these are only used for 20 minutes at a time max on average. The welds are to keep the core together and not tear itself apart instead of efficiency. Reuse of the motor windings with the enamel on it is a decent idea. But there are going to be kinks and thin spots that cause excessive heating inside the winding. And just please... Use an Old IEC connector from a power supply or wire nuts or something instead of shoving bare wire into an IEC plug.

@glasslingerАй бұрын
The welds on the core in those positions have no significant effect on the transformer efficiency.
@MrElectronАй бұрын
Actually welding the core increases iron/core losses which results in higher no load losses. I believe efficiency is not the priority for microwaves.

Why do you say try not to do these things at home? when most people do those things at home when they're watching videos like this! Only do this at at the risk of your own life sounds like a more important message to send! Don't you think you're doing those things at your own risk ? And you should also mention in your videos that people should gain a better understanding of electricity before doing anything like that!🤔
@WelderSkills.1Ай бұрын
Also you are plugging that microwave transformer into 110 volts not 220 volts or 240 volts but 110 volts because 220 volts requires two separate hot wires and one neutral wire and one ground wire or two hot wires and one ground wire not just a single hotwire a neutral wire Andy ground wire it's good to educate yourself about electrical stuff the right way an educate people about electrical stuff the right way
@CrapperCopterАй бұрын
Many countries use 240V 2-wire single phase (hot & neutral) instead of 240V split phase (or the less common 3-phase 4-wire open Delta which can do 120, 208, and 240 single phase and 240 3-phase although you can only get up to 208 using the neutral and the wild hot), which matches his comment of having 240V but needing 120 at the start. Lots of safety issues using MOTs but you picked something to be absolutely incorrect about, congrats.
@WelderSkills.1Ай бұрын
@@CrapperCopter no the appliances that he is using do not run on 240 otherwise the appliances would burn up and that would be a major electrical hazard.
