Alundra is so good, i love it. At the time, it always competed with Symphony of the Night as my favorite PS1 game. It's been a long time since i've touched SotN but Alundra still finds its way onto my TV now and then, it's just a solid game all around. I actually got into Landstalker because of Alundra, which then made me get all the other Landstalker-related games like Lady Stalker (even though I have no idea what's going on in it), Time Stalkers and Dark Savior. All because of Alundra.

Man, i love this "Crt style" (Like you do in the video to show the gameplay) and for playing 2D games (And some others Classics 3d too), if you play these games in the emulator you have a bunch of configurations to make the Full HD graphics, effects, shaders, bombs, meteors, magic, rasengans, hadoukens and something, but in my opinion, Scanlines with no shaders/Texture Filter make this game WONDERFUL to me, seems like i'm playing on real console with a Good TV. (I miss the old times) Just my opinion, Alundra is amazing, i'll try Alundra 2 too. Amazing video, keep it work man!

The idea of diving into people's dreams is intriguing alone, but then you mention how they use silence and moving music to make you connect with the characters too. I like the way you describe games without too much detail, just giving a general idea of the most important points of it. I also enjoy how the game looks and how the character moves. Working Designs always made great games, i have yet to play a game of theirs i didn't like.

Hearing that smooth, confident voice of yours never gets dull, Derek! Alundra is a masterpiece for sure and it'll only get more and more popular thru out time! I have never played Land Stalker(but have played the original Shining Force), but you know what I played that looks very similar to it? Equinox for SNES! The dungeon crawling, the cool world map, the ambient yet sometimes intense music that makes you feel like your almost there, and the wicked, wicked enemies and bosses! I think you would enjoy that title if you decide to play it someday! Great Games Collection episode, keep being super, Derek!

This was and still is a classic on the Playstation. I remember seeing this at a friends house back when it first came out and I bought one for myself. I still have it to this day. It's definitley challenging, thats for sure and I notcied that most of the games published by Workign Designs for the Playstation were challenging. The tone and music for this game match perfectly. It does remind me a bit of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening, in that you have an overworld that has areas that are accessible only if you have certain items, you have lots of hidden treasures, and also each of these games has a central town, with other houses scattered throughout.

its more along the lines that gaming of today has become too easy and obvious in most RPGs the puzzle solving is not as difficult as it used to be so when someone plays an old classic title the puzzles in RPG games are always going to tend to be much harder and more challenging. Besides the hard part isnt the puzzles its the last 3 bosses of the game xD

I'm playing through this again right now. You said it all at the beginning; it truly is awesome. This is one of my favourite games for the Playstation. I haven't played nearly as many RPG's as you though, so I've got some catching up to do. Terranigma looks a good bet for my next game as it seems somewhat similar to Alundra (I like the action over turn-based these days, though many of my favourite games do revolve around the latter -- but a lack of patience for them these days make them more of an effort to play again).

Theres a reason this game was considered a "Hidden Gem".The gameplay was so much fun and awesome puzzles which made it an actual awesome Zelda clone...but the story...damn...it was so dark&depressing like a really sad memory you wish to forget.I actually cried at some of the scenes in game and lost the urge to play it until I felt better. The way the NPC's were treated and then blaming Alundra for it too,and the music stuck the hearts chord during the death scenes.I could really feel the guilt. This game could soften even the stoniest hearts, but I missed playing it.

DrRESHES Sadly, I haven't. I mean, I played Pokemon X, which was in my opinion, exactly like every other Pokemon game I've ever played which at this point is neither a bad, nor a good thing really, but I'd have a hard time saying that I really liked it. Beyond that though, I haven't played any modern JRPGs, unless you paint "JRPG" (and "new") with a really wide brush -- in which case I really liked my time with Dark Souls 1 and 2. On the other hand, I've been interested in playing Bravely Default, since I've been hearing some really good things about that. And Persona 4 Golden for PS Vita, which I don't own... Working Designs known for quality? Say that to me when I'm trying to play Albert Odyssey. Fuck that translation. :'(

Ironically, the translation for Alundra is also unfaithful, there's many out of place jokes and innuendos that really clash with the serious tone of the game, it's so out of place and irrelevant to the game itself, they also increased all of the enemy and boss health.

Awesome! Sounds like you've got a good time ahead of you! One of the best action RPGs on the PSX. :)

Can't believe I never played this. I've known about it for nearly 2 decades but never got my hands on it.

Alundra is The Legend of Zelda meets A Nightmare On Elm Street which was very well done.

The part in the beginning where you have to speak to every npc in the town to progress drives me crazy

Yes, one of my favourite games is being reviewed! I was so happy when I saw this vid pop up :). It's the game that I always tell people to play, especially considering the price of it on PSN (£4). I agree with everything you said here. The music, the dark story, the combat...everything is perfect to me. There are plenty of PS1 games that I love, but FF8, FF9 and Alundra all compete to be my favourite. Thanks so much for making this and bringing back the nostalgia, Derek :).
