"The apparition of knowledge in the Court of Rudolph II" brings to light a historical event that has surprisingly been largely ignored by established historians.
Emperor Rudolph II (nephew of Phillip II of Spain) lived in Prague during the 16th century. This unusual emperor put territorial affaires and religious wars in a secondary place in order to dedicate himself to the development of science and the arts. It was under his lavish patronage that the largest concentration of knowledge in that epoch took place.
Figures such as Kepler, who were very often hiding from religions prosecution, were able to develop their work thanks to the support of the emperor. This video reveals the late renaissance expression of knowledge where religion, science and the arts became fused in the search for a fundamental understanding of the
world and of life.
This was an atmosphere where ideas and knowledge were trying to develop and overcome the religious antagonisms that, in years to come, would bring extreme destruction to Europe.
Neither the train of thought nor the sensitivity nor the tolerant attitude of the Rudolphian era were to remain influential later on and during ensuing centuries his figure was repeatedly undervalued. Nevertheless, from the 20th century onwards, its cultural, artistic and spiritual values have been revived thanks to modern thinking.

I dont really honestly know if the west was completly backward, as Places such as Venice and the Byzantian empire were fairly advanced.

The danger of intellectualism in societies that reject Biblical Christianity (which is Protestantism and NOT Roman Catholicism) is that the human soul is inevitably ensnared by the hermetic teachings, which are nothing more than the demonic ideologies of the ancient world. The only success Europe had was when protestant Christian nations embraced intellectualism, because then you had a clear distinction between science and religion. The Biblical worldview teaches that the Creator is separate from the Creation, so man can worship God correctly on the one hand and manage his material life rationally on the other hand, according to God's wisdom, without making the gross moral and logical errors caused by mysticism. When the light of the Word of God is removed, as it is in Roman Catholic nations as well as secular nations, man stumbles in darkness and is defenseless against the wiles of the Devil, who seduces him into eating the forbidden fruit, into the Faustian bargain, which demands that one trade his soul for knowledge and power. Thus you end up with pantheistic and pagan errors that involve scientists and politicians in mysticism and ritualism, which in turn leads to demonic possession and ultimately to God's Judgment against that nation.

That is the wrong Maximilian, in the video, that is the grandfather of Charles V, the man who largely built up the Habsburg dynasty. Son of Frederich III
