That’s a good question. I once asked Alan Wallace about merit and he had a helpful explanation. From what I understand about it, various kinds of virtuous actions contribute to developing merit which enhances receptivity and beneficial circumstances (auspicious coincidence or tendrel). Receptivity is at the heart of benefiting from exposure to teachers and as Tenzin Palmo describes, if ones mind is all over place, there won’t be receptivity. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKO8iX5ooL6Ces0
