Oh the irony! The makeup and prosthetics it took to make Dennis look so absolutely disheveled is flawless. He looks like every bad thing he projects on women he considers unattractive, which is clearly a reflection of how he truly views himself on the inside. Charlie's comment, "this is what your soul looks like" is incredibly cutting and accurate. I thought character development was something reserved for maybe the first few episodes, but somehow they're able to make it transcend the entire length of the show. They're all despicable human beings, but Dennis is the embodiment of pure evil.

This was actually devastating to watch. It’s hard for me not to empathize with Dennis given how much insight we’ve gotten into his mental health struggles and why he behaves the way that he does. Glenn did such a phenomenal job shaping Dennis into who he is while molding the subtleties that make him such a unique and well-rounded character, and this episode peels all those layers back to show the core of who he really is.

They’re exaggerated personifications of the worst parts about ourselves. They’re the intrusive thoughts that we all have but never act on. They’re the parts of ourselves that we hate, but they’re still parts of us. They play a part in our lives. They make us who we are. You can’t have the good without the bad. Maybe give the show a rewatch with that perspective, eh?

You can empathize with a person who is mentally disturbed, not necessarily justifying their behavior. Lots of these types of people could benefit from psychiatry and that's not to say it's always successful but could curb/moderate them enough to function. He's sick, he needs help.
