I've found a different method (although might be less effective) if you start, place your mark in the center. if they mark the corner, mark another corner and it will be a draw if they don't, mark the corner that's opposite to the edge they marked. for example: X-- -X- -O- then all the moves will be forced: just block/defend and you will win. you'll end up with this display: X-- -X- XOO it's "O" to play and there are two threats (top right and middle left), so "X" is winning

if you start center, (say its x who starts) than you only have to respond to you opponent. in first scenario O moves to any edge, just pick one of the 2 corners opposite of them and you win (this is your strategy) in second scenario O moves to any corner (like a smart player), than pick the opposite corner, now they have 3 choices, 1: force your win and pick one of the edges next to their first move (this ends with them responding into an v, and o forces x into win) (ignore the extra symbols, they are for spacing) -- -- X -- -- X O X -- --> -- X -- O -- -- O O X 2: give you a chance to always win and pick the edge next to your corner. here its all x response on win or tie, pick either the corner or edge such that you get an v with either the middle or 1 edge and another edge open, or you pick else where and draw (marked them on the diagram bellow with W) -- O X -- X W O -- W 3: force the tie, and pick any corner, here the move plays out in forced plays, leaving you with a tie (all plays lead to forced plays into a tie or just tie by default) O -- X O -- X -- X -- --> X X O O -- -- O -- --

There's a better way to either win or tie if you're the first: Go in the center If the opponent goes in the side, you already won (try to figure out why) If the opponent goes in 1 corner, place your cross in the other corner. If he places the circle on the side, you'll still win. If he places his circle in another corner, hope he makes a mistake to win, but if you play well you'll surely tie
