I think when it comes to dressing vintage, particularly with 40s and 50s, it looks like a costume if you're copying what the models were wearing in photoshoots (i.e. wearing heavy makeup and styling with lots of accessories such as a hat, gloves, necklaces, bracelets, glasses, etc). But if you look at photos of average people from the time they don't usually have all of those elements at once and they tend to wear more natural makeup, so I find copying them tends to look more natural (e.g. Karolina Zebrowska's style)

@tangerinetangerine44009 ай бұрын
So true. I don't like outfits that look like a costume. That doesn't only apply to "retro" looks. But even trending looks like Kim K (long sleek hair, perfect thick makeup, tight clothes) makes everyone look the same and it looks cartoonish. I also love Karolina's channel! Mainly for her insights about fashion norms in different eras. Would love to see a collaboration video with her and Ally. ❤

I think it’s also taking inspiration more from pin up images or even more general artwork of the era, rather than real clothes. Gets so tacky.

You make the best videos. Over the years I’ve really enjoyed watching them. I cannot express to you how encouraging and empowering it is to hear that each person should respect their natural beauty and enhance it. You made a statement once that has stayed with me-“don’t DISRESPECT your hooded eyes!” I always HATED them, but I realize now they harmonize with my whole look. I also stopped coloring my hair. (I look at pictures from years ago and 🤷♀️WHAT WAS I THINKING?) I really appreciate your work, from your music to your styling/fashion sense. It’s freeing to be who I truly am. Aly's observation of make-up trends in recognizing with such in-depth observation is like science to me. Like when she mentioned having such a strong light on your face while filming can give you that round moon face effect on camera. That to me explained years of women putting on dark heavy amounts of bronzer and contour while filming only to have an end result of looking like a 5th-grade stage makeup tutorial

I love how you Aly encourage women to celebrate their individual beauty, not trying to push trends or sell a certain look that everyone should aim for. Personally I wouldn't want to look like eveybody else following the same trends. It's so sad nowadays with plastic surgery becoming so popular most of the girls following these beauty ideals are starting to look more and more like the same person. I love channels like yours saying we don't have to play by the same rules of beauty influencers/industry who most of the time wants us to feel insecure in order to keep selling us stuff. Thank you and keep doing what you're doing ❤

I really appreciate the shift towards bespoke, “natural face shaped” beauty tips. I think the more we move away from fast trends that only suit a certain looking person, the more the beauty industry can increase in quality and the more beautiful women will feel in their own skin. 💜

I remember some years back trying yo think about what "tacky" or dowdy looks were, and at that point I realized that to me, it usually means wearing something that doesn't suit you. An individual item can look dowdy or trashy on one person, but absolutely stunning on another. You just put this so eloquently, tactfully and in such a detailed way. I love it. Kind of want to show this to my mother as we have gotten into so many fights over my hair. She doesn't realize we do chunky waves now (or the crunchy curls of the 00s thinks the 1980s fluff is the only way for hair to look good.

I agree with Aly, if we know how to NAME the different elements, we can make them work for us and not against us. We know how they combine, what do they offer and what not. I find this useful also in other aspects of life. For example after I found how to name certain psychological traits, I knew it how to "map" myself better and work with it. It's not labelling. It's "maping".

You described it perfectly and confirmed to me that it's all about mix&match. I've always done that and I thought I was doing the right thing because that's what my mother did, but then people started recognizing bits in my outfit from different decades/influences and somehow still put me in one category. I still had confidence in my style that was never "trendy" per se, but a mixture of all the things I like. I was wondering if I'm doing it right but yours and Ellie Jean's videos confirmed it so I'm glad we align, as you said, nowadays everybody looks around and is combining all the pieces from around the world, as we travel a lot more and see a lot more. Maybe that's why this nostalgia trend is so popular right now, everybody is mixing everything!! And I love it, I am more of a vintage girl so that's my excuse to finally be trendy :)) I had the chance to experiment with '60s inspired trends and I found out it really suits me, I received more compliments than usual and even the hairdresser suggested sth similar.

So true ❤I love playing with colours and I had a couple makeup classes in uni and I would say the “wilder” the colours the more time you need to invest. Your base needes to be as close to perfect as possible and liner and mascara/lashes is a must to pull a cobalt blue eye look off 💙 other than the browns and beiges I would suggest all the metals depending on your eye colour. Silver for gray & blue eyes, light and rose gold for hazel and green eyes, antique gold and bronze for brown eyes. Not saying anyone can’t wear a certain colour but for an easy evening look this is a more or less fail proof pairing. Put a neutral colour close to your skin tone in the crease and blend well. I personally would put a small amount of the metallic shade on my lower lash line but it’s up to your taste. Finish with mascara (black or brown), eyeliner or lashes if you want to. ❤
