Having a wish list was a game changer for me. I often would add things, and then when I went back to the list weeks or even months later, I would remove 99% of the saved items. My no buy year (was for a month when I started) is going so well, better than I ever dreamed I could possibly achieve. Thank you, Alyssa, for all that you do on your channel's ❤

Your philosophy has really helped me the past few seasons. I’ve bought less, loved what I have, have thought about my style in a new way, and just leave the house feeling better and more confident each day. I used to have no patience for fashion. Now I know my style, I embrace it. Thank you!

I had a fantasy self dress in my closet that went unworn for a year. I gave myself three months to wear it or donate it. Last night I wore it. Not only was it comfortable, I got a few compliments. Now I wish I'd worn it sooner!

When I add a piece from my wishlist, it is nuts how much wear and delight I get from the piece. This is especially illuminating when I compare it to a piece I bought that was impulsive! This is a huge reminder for me why wishlists are critical to having great style.

So happy I came across your channel (I think last fall) You have taught this old (I'm 56) dog some new tricks -- or just even better articulated some wardrobe / closet habits I already do (shop your closet😉) but the best tips by far have been becoming aware of what is bought on repeat (asking self why? discovering "fantasy self") and yes: having a LIST!! I too do this for groceries and even errand day, so why not the closet? This year's list included not an item, but adding the color burgundy (vs red) to my mostly black wardrobe and loving it!! Thanks for your continuing inspiration and diverse POV! ❤

Thank you for another great video, this was so helpful. I always had a list but added the things I thought I should have on it, or just everything I wanted. I never knew how to discover the things that I actually needed. And once again, the answer is to play around in my own closet. I have never really done this seriously before. I am having a 3-month pause in spending on clothes (1 September to 1 December) as I want to break my spending habits, so I will use that time wisely to play around in my closet and really find out what I need, and curate my list 👍👍

I really like your channel. I've always loved clothes and I've been pretty strategic about them. I almost never buy anything that I can't use in at least 3 outfits, unless I really like it and I'm willing to buy other items to create outfits (HUGE exceptions). I also don't buy impulsively. I wait several days to make sure I'm in love with an item. Unless, I'm traveling, of course. And even then, I will wait a couple of hours. That being said, I started using Indyx thanks to you and I find it very useful to manage my closet even better. It helped me realize that there are two timeless staples that I actually don't like: black skirts and button-down shirts. Who would have thought? I also really like Sustain This. Your tips and insights are very useful. Thanks!

Love all your insights. I've had a "thrift list" on my phone for a while, but using your tips I've fleshed it out a bit and gotten really specific. I've added a likes/dislikes section to the bottom as well. I particularly enjoyed you comments on never achieving a "perfect closet". That's a mindset shift that I'd love to see more discussion on. Thinking of my wardrobe as constantly shifting and changing (and never done) is a new concept for me.

Especially when shopping hand / vintage, it is important to have a flexible wishlist, since if not you are limited to things you “know” already when you make the list. For new things, it’s fine, since you can do research better from home than walking around the shops. But when buying vintage/ second hand, you need to let inspiration guide ypu, since you cant always find these things online. So when I make my list, I indeed try to make it about colour, silhouette, style etc… so a long camel colour wintercoat in cashmere or cashmere blend, with a belt or silhouette that allow belting… or a light coloured shirt with big sleves or dramatic cuffs to go under sleveles vests… And also keeping in mind, I think it was from Christina Mychas, the saying “ If it’s not a hell yes, it is a hell no! 😊”

Shopping for my fantasy life is such a hard habit to give up.
@Teverell2 ай бұрын
I know what I like and wear... but currently I can't fit into my favourite trousers because I've put on enough weight over the past few months that I've gone up about two dress sizes, which is something I really have to deal with in learning to eat better and exercise (like, at all). So I've found myself shopping more over the summer because I've had money to do so, and have suddenly needed trousers I can actually fit into. It doesn't help that I am pretty compulsive in my shopping habits, though I am doing my best to curb the desire to buy All The Things. I need to do a proper and thorough declutter of the things I don't wear and won't wear even if I lose the weight, and sort through everything else. Wish me luck!
@AlyssaBeltempo2 ай бұрын
You got this! I think awareness is one of the most important habits :)

@Teverell I appreciated your post (and you made me laugh!). When you wrote 'pretty compulsive in my shopping habits', I could see myself holding multiple store carry-bags. Such a happy business unloading all that 'loot' from the trunk. And as for sorting through things, you may find the processes of lifting, reaching, unpacking and repacking and trying your clothes on, actually ticks up your heart rate a little 😉 That would be such a Win/Win if you dropped a pound or two in the declutter process. Hope you're pleased with a more streamlined closet, filled with clothes you like and wear.

Love the list idea-I need it. I’ve wanted a slouchy black bag that will fit over my coat for some time - bags are the hardest for me. I purchase to many inferior ones because I don’t feel confident purchasing one I won’t wear. I need to pick one out IN PERSON and feel the weight of it and if it stays on my shoulder. I get too impulsive - I’m going to make a list and a sub list of what the item actually needs to consist of!

I discovered buying secondhand shoes to replace my favorite pieces that have been completely worn out. I know exactly the model, the size, and can be sure that they fit me well, so I just search online. So far I managed to buy two exact pairs I used to have, I wish I could do this with all of my favourite items 😅

Like you said in the beginning of the video. I’ve done a grocery list my whole life and really put it into practice these past 10years to not overbuy food items which I do not do anymore. However, it’s strange that with my Wishlist things keep on being put on, it’s an ever growing list😂. I’m terrible with it, for me slow fashion is something I’ve watched from the sidelines for years, always desired to be better, but this is the first year I’m trying to practice what I’ve learnt. And to be honest, it’s been eye opening to actually track my clothes and spending in an app as well. I’ve never done that before. The Wishlist thing is a double edged sword for me. Sometimes it makes me want more things sometimes I delete the entire thing. It’s very difficult!

Yes! I am not allowed to buy black or gray sweaters unless it is swap (one in, one out) because I have plenty! It's a lot dark color. I am hunting for red, pink, burgundy, purple to add color. I also keep seeing green sweaters...le sigh.

Yes certainly! It helps you to know it's 100% complete waste of money and time. You skip it or take one look and put it back on the rack without needing to spend another minute thinking about it. Some of my do-not-buy include anything cool tone, high neck or turtle neck tops/dresses, polyester fabric.

I am a big fan of lists and wouldn’t go grocery shopping without one. HOWEVER, I’ve found having lists for my wardrobe has just become about replacing pieces that wear out and I end up looking for a replacement so specific that I miss out on the joy of finding new styles/colours/entirely new styles. This happened to me last year with a cardigan. I bought what I thought I needed and what was a good buy on paper. Then came across some really gorgeous clothes that would have done the same job, but in a different style. Now the cardigan I bought just feels dowdy and utilitarian and I’ve never actually worn it… lists be gone!!!

I am very visual. I don’t remember faces but I remember the outfit ppl wore when I met them (good, bad, or aura). For me, photo folder on my phone is the best way. I have items I bought in category albums I can reference to decide if I’d keep something. Before traveling I put clothing shoes accessories photos into a new folder to edit what I’d take. I am not naturally creative but I seek beauty in nature and created objects.

I was never a shop just to shop person, I had a list or a spedific item that I wanted or needed. (This is why thrifting does not work for me unless it's done online) Often I am looking for a spedific color or style. That cuts down on impulse or inappropriate purchases. Some years those are more plentiful & that's when I will add to my wardrobe (after decluttering pieces I no longer wear )

I’m all for a closet refresh from time to time particularly at times of significant life transitions and there is no need to stick to a sustainability and minimalism message if it isn’t serving your present circumstances. I did a closet refresh after a major illness and now 3 years in I have one item on my Pinterest board/ wish list. That may change in a few seasons.

@lesleyc2704 I don't feel that Minimalism is a primary philosophy of Alyssa's channel. I'm sure she understands the principles well, and may follow many of the minimalism practices. The words I hear repeated most regularly from her are "Creativity (shop your closet), "Slow Fashion" and "Conscious Consumption". I feel Alyssa always encourages her audience to interpret these aims in their own unique way.
