Alzheimer Disease Cerebrospinal Fluid Biomarkers

Dr. Wentao Li, A Neurologist from Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento, Sacramento, CA, reviews his article appearing in the August 2024 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings where he finds in a heterogenous clinical population, abnormal p-Tau181/Aβ42 ratios (greater than 0.023) had the strongest association with Alzheimer dementia and likely represent a comorbid Alzheimer disease pathological component in persons who clearly fit non-Alzheimer neurodegenerative syndromes. Altered cerebrospinal fluid dynamics disorders were associated with lower concentrations of Alzheimer disease cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers regardless of clinical diagnosis, but the ratio compensated for these changes. In the appropriate clinical setting, an isolated abnormal Aβ42 should prompt consideration of normal pressure hydrocephalus. Available at: mayocl.in/4bl9ddZ
