I'm french and i've met quite a few portuguese over the years as there is a large portugese community here in France. Most of them have pale skin and light eyes but i would have never guessed you were portuguese. I would have said Irish or english. My friends with portugese origins are really nice and very proud of their parents country. i've never been to Portugal but i've only heard great things about it. Sounds like a beautiful country!

K Le Blanc, I totally agree with you. I'm Irish,she would easily pass as an Irish girl. I'm learning French and Portuguese,both are romance languages and very similars. Well,I visited Portugal in 2017,and I was really impressed how similars are Portuguese people and Irish people,specially traits,eyes,etc...Some people say many clichés about Portuguese, some say they are swarthy. But in general they're pale. Portugal had a huge celtic influence in the past. Celtic people from Iberia migrated to British Islands. That's why Irish,Portuguese,Spanish and French have many traits in common. The truth is that French,Spanish,Portuguese and Irish have over 70 per cent of celtic DNA.

@Kassandra. You got me interested with your insightfull comment so i've looked up Portugal history and it looks like Portugal have been conquered by the moors ( If your interested search for "The iberian peninsula in 750" ). Correct me if i'm wrong because i didn't go in depth in my research. What is even more interesting for that matter is the Portuguese colonial empire. Slaves were brought from Africa and India to Portugal. You'd think that children of these slaves would end up being portuguses and influencing the traits of todays portuguese traits. I was really interested in doing one of those DNA test but after finding out that it was not as accurate as i thought it was, i gave up but i love the idea of knowing where your ancestors lived. What i love even more is how going back in time makes us Humans more than anything else because you'll always find that you share DNA with human beings coming from various places of the plante. just like Chá das cinco beautifully said:"That's why Irish,Portuguese,Spanish and French have many traits in common". France, Spain, Portugal,etc. all those countries seem to have always been a crossroads in human routes of migration so it's like we shouldn't even be surprised with all the DNA meltingpot at this point. Edit: Saunders, A. (2010). A Social History of Black Slaves and Freedmen in Portugal. pp. 19-21: "The records of the royal chronicler Zurara claim that 927 African slaves were brought to Portugal between 1441 and 1448, and an estimated 1000 black slaves arrived in Portugal each year afterward. A common estimate is that around 2000 black slaves arrive in Lisbon annually after 1490." Magalhaes, J.R. (1997). "Africans, Indians, and Slavery in Portugal: "Slaves were able to buy their freedom by saving any earnings, so long as their masters allow them to keep their earnings, or purchase a slave to replace them. Women slaves could be freed if their masters chose to marry them, but this was more common among the colonies. When Lisbon was on the verge of being invaded in 1580, slaves were promised their freedom in exchange for their military service. 440 slaves took the offer and most, after being freed, left Portugal. Black female slaves were desired by portuguese men, resulting in many mixed-race offspring. This prompted the Council of Trent in 1563 to denounce the widespread immorality. Mulattoes had the ability to integrate into society, some would even command whole fleets of ships. Slavery did little to alter society in Portugal, due to the slight ease of enslaved people’s integration."
@anna46424 жыл бұрын
There was a slave market in the South of Portugal. And again in the South, some wealthy individuals did have slaves until it was banned by the King. I don’t know what happen to them. Back then people were very prejudice against outsiders and people that looked different. I know that prior to 1974 no one from the empire could come to Portugal without a license and no Portuguese could leave the country without a license too. I’m know men misbehaved in the colonies that’s why the vast majority of the population of Brazil are mixed by white men and Native American women and black women. I don’t think those men were allowed to bring their families to Portugal due to the racism back then but they could do pretty much what they wanted in the colonies! I know, it’s so disgusting!

It is noticed that you do not know Italians and Greeks to believe that they are even more brunet in pigmentatio of skin than the Portuguese. Even Southern Italians and Greeks are whiter than the Portuguese and the Southerm Spanish. In general I would say that Italians and Greeks are whiter in skin color than Spaniards, but Spaniards have a higher percentage of light eyes than Greeks. The Portuguese, on the other hand, are only compared with the Italians from Sardinia and with the Spanish from the south.

There is a big variety in phenotypes in Italy, too. Lots of fair skinned and also blue-eyed Italians in the northern parts of Italy. Northern Italians look more like Austrians, Swiss or Southern Germans than they look like Southern Italians.
@douglassmith51884 жыл бұрын
@@maximilianmustermann5763 In fact, the phenotype differences between northern and southern Italians have been greatly exaggerated for reasons of a political nature, since the north has always wanted to separate itself from the rest of the peninsula. In the north of Italy as well as in the south of the peninsula it is possible to find a great number of dark and Moorish-looking types as well as a great number of fair skinned types as well as blond and red-haired blue eyes. From north to south of Italy, you will find people who look like Turks or Lebanese and people who look like Austrians or Irish. But in general, the pigmentation that predominates in most Italians is brown in the color of the hair and eyes, whereas in the color of the skin it is on average half olive color and the other half is pinkish or pale with variations from north to south.
@douglassmith51884 жыл бұрын
@@maximilianmustermann5763 But I insist on saying that the Portuguese and the South Spaniards in terms of pigmentation only compare with the Italians in Sardinia and with the darkest parts of Calabria and Apulia. And it is clear that even in these regions it is possible to find a significant minority of fair skinned and light-eyed people and even some blond and redheads. But the pigmentation is predominantly dark.

This vlog was most revealing because where I’m from (USA-Seattle ) we have no idea what the Portuguese are like. I’ve been to Bilbao and Iglacia and assume there are similarities. My wife’s family comes from Vadheim Norway and have that family name and heritage from Lasse Vadheim who settled in Wisconsin and Minnesota USA. My wife’s father moved from Minnesota to Tacoma WA in 1943. In 1967 my wife and I (age 23) visited Oslo, Stockholm and Copenhagen. I was a graduate architect (1966) in the US Army at the time (1967). Love your vlog and wish you well for a satisfying life as an architect and all it promises for a full and productive life. You’ve definitely got the the right idea with a love of travel. Eventually you might even become a genuine human, however I think you are already there except for you sister’s lead with a child. Keep up the good work. Richard Bittmann, Architect, Tacoma, WA

Physically I would have guessed you were French or maybe English. Not a lot of people of the North Atlantid phenotype in Portugal.

In true Portuguese (which is spoken only in Brazil, of course :)), the word "rabugento" means "chato pra car***"! LOL According to one research (edition.cnn.com/travel/article/coolest-nationalities/index.html), Brazilians are "the coolest people on the planet". So either it is not true or I'm not even Brazilian. Anyway, most of what you've read about the Portuguese in the video would apply to Brazilians as well. A curious fact: I don't get a thing of what you say when you say a word or phrase in Portuguese in your videos until I rewind and listen to it again! This is common when we Brazilians hear Portuguese people speaking fast. I therefore think you're a typical Portuguese person :D :D :D

I used to stay in Portugal 5 years, had a house in Caldas da rainha. I have been everywhere in Portugal. Most Portuguese I have seen are like combination of French and Arab with strange eye colour. The darkest shade of eyes I have seen is hazel. I rarely seen Portuguese with dark brown eyes. girl and guys there are very small body, they tend to be very petti and not curvy, some have almost light blonde hair and blue eyes, some with brown hair, than skin, fair skin etc.

De toda maneira, o importante é o património pessoal com o país. Não a origem. Isso é tão fútil... e as vezes racista : considerar alguém chinês só por causa do seu físico e não a sua real nacionalidade etc

159 is average height for a woman in America, so you are not super short, but average height for a woman in America. If Portuguese are short, than you are taller than most Portuguese women. Great video though. I have some Portuguese in me, but it seems I am much more Portuguese than I thought from watching your video

Lol. The maiory of portuguese (and others south europeian people) have pale skin, but many tan it. ;-) The diferente is the tone. Southers(?) have a bit "yellowish" skin and the north's people have pinky-milky skin.
@lorenam.l.57885 жыл бұрын
Ana My Heritage is from Algarve in the south. I have hazel eyes, but my dad has bright blue eyes and other side of family list of green eyes. Both sides have lots of pale skin that does not tan and blond or light brown hair. I live in Australia where we have lots of people from all over Portugal and Madeira and there is absolutely no difference ....can’t say there are more pale skin or light eyed people from the north. I’m going to mention particularly people from the Algarve country towns of Salir / Alte and surrounding areas, which was once inhabited by the Celts. I personally know lots of people from there and most are fair skin and blue eyed. Algarvios might appear dark and that’s because generally they are tanned due to all that sunshine in the south compared to northern Portugal.

Our ancestors are also from Germanic tribes... France and Germany did not exist as nations during that period! And all Western Europe with some exceptions were colonies of the Roman Empire!

15 minutes late is not late? LOL! I feel bad if I'm just a couple of minutes late, max 5 minutes for me. Five names are massive for a Norwegian, but more and more have four. Blending the old "farmer" tradition of having two first names (first letter of each name corresponds with the first letters of two grandparents), with the old "aristocrat" tradition with two surnames (important family names)(or a result of feminism, where the mothers surname is inherited by the child, along with the fathers surname). Two or three names is more common. I only have two. You got "yes" on you test, but can you at the same time be a typical Norwegian?? You should find out ;)
