In case this tidbit got buried, this incredible setting of stark poetry is "Idumea" from the Original Sacred Harp. You can no doubt find it in four parts elsewhere on You Tube, sung by a full gathering of singers, but the flavor would be distinctly different. With Tim's input, it became part of the Cold Mountain soundtrack. Tim is one of the finest respecters (I must underscore that fact!) as well as interpreters of traditional upland Southern music, with whom I have had the everlasting joy of sharing song on several occasions. Everyone is right; it just doesn't get any better than this.

Scott Howard I could not agree more. However, imo, certain Appalachian Churches need to me out on notice as well. Too many turning their backs on the beauty of traditional Church music to pop type or even Opera type music. Don't get me wrong I love all types of music. But there is a time and place for it. Sorry, don't mean to rant. I know it's not cool. It is just this and other deep, hauntingly beautiful songs remain unheard while fluff is being disguised as inspirational. Sort of makes sense. It is just an introduction to an equally Biblically empty sermon. Generally one or two Bible verses spoken with the remainder of the service hearing about the preachers Uncle Ben's bad toe or something. Thank God my prayers were answered and I found a Church that actually teaches the Word of God. Once again I apologize. I hope that I did not offend anyone. Believers or non-unbelievers. Stay safe folks.

And am I born to die? To lay this body down! And must my trembling spirit fly Into a world unknown A land of deepest shade Unpierced by human thought The dreary regions of the dead Where all things are forgot Soon as from earth I go What will become of me? Eternal happiness or woe Must then my portion be! Waked by the trumpet sound I from my grave shall rise And see the Judge with glory crowned And see the flaming skies

Wonderful!. Can you tell me what predates what? Was this song a shape note song first or was it adapted to shape note from an earlier tune. P.S. Please come to Denver for the springtime. I believe we may have friends or acquaintances in common in the shape note and Balkan music circles.

That is Cassandra "Cassie" Franklin of Henagar, northeastern Alabama, in the Sand Mountain region of that state. It's very unfortunate that the uploader has still not properly credited all the musicians in this video in the video description above.
can someone please name the female vocalist? She sings a special harmonic vocal, special to the Sacred Harp tradition (and not at all shrill as one commentator put it)
