I’ve been beating myself up for over 60 years, I was brought up by guardians and always felt different throughout my life, it has affected every relationship I’ve ever had, I carried the guilt of my biological parents not wanting me right through to now, I’ve lived “most” of my life alone and now after 23 years on a small narrowboat I’m 71. I’ve worked out that life is a journey and whatever we do in between it will always end the same so it’s pointless fighting the inevitable. Loneliness is just a state of mind and as long as you can find a way of “liking yourself” it isn’t that bad. In the winter months a look at nature and the little creatures trying to stay warm and fed which puts my situation in perspective. Self sufficiency is an art May and will make you a stronger person in the future 👍🏻

You’re absolutely right, it's best to cook for others, be cooked for or cook together - food is not just fuel but is a shareable, and social and spiritual thing at the very heart of life. Food cooked with love by someone else always tastes better, unless they are a truly terrible cook! It can be hard to find motivation to make the effort to cook properly for yourself but it always makes me feel better in the end, both physically from having eaten well and emotionally too. Having a dishwasher helps too - mechanical or human.

Frist off your sound affects worked amazingly, the Elderberry cordial will be something to look forward to on a cold winter night. As for the loneliness, it like you were saying, there are times when you find yourself wanting to tell more that just your family and close friends what you have experienced. But if you look at another way... I am not sure of my wording here. So I will use to the answer I use when people ask me the same question. "I am the privileged position were I can chose who and how I let into my life" it works for me (most times) I think I have said before, but you May have created a wonderful community, you are the catalyst for so much good in the world. So thank you for giving us the honour of sharing it with you.

May, you are an inspiration in so many areas that you didn't talk about very much, e.g. getting encouragement and strength from being in nature in fresh air, smiling and having fun at your own expense, not taking yourself too seriously! Jim here from Australia, but I was born a stone's throw from the Leeds Liverpool canal in Yorkshire and some of my earliest memories involve dreaming of living on a canal boat, but I never have. So your journey helps me to live out vicariously a dream that can never be in reality!

Nice film, May… I hope that you meet someone to share your life with before too long… from my own experience it’s the most beautiful part of existing if one is lucky enough to really connect and share life and love with another being… I met the love of my life 45 years ago.. we parted after a while but found each other again on Facebook having both parted from previous loved ones… we have been back together for two years now and having the most wonderful simple and loving time… after so long apart we relish the connection we have made again… so God bless social media !! 🤗❤️

I think you have things sorted . You have a lovely Home ( which like homes of any type needs constant repairs) but with the advantage of ever changing scenery . You have ( from seeing your videos) a large pool of friends only too glad of the opportunity to visit or help you move or repair the boat . Your close to your old Home which you can visit anytime you like ( Mum will be glad of that ) . You are able to use the wonders of Social Media to Help and Encourage people around the world , to stay Healthy and Happy . Being on your own ,leaves space and time to be Creative. Being on your own is not so bad . Some people can not bear to be alone ,and stop functioning altogether. Your one of the Lucky ones ! 😊. Please carry on with the videos and Brightening our day .

We can feel lonely in a crowd and content walking on our own on a trail in the middle of nowhere. I think it’s a lot more about knowing who else is on the planet that might be thinking about you or happy to see you even if they’re (hundreds of) miles away I’ve never tried yoga or meditation, but I do think there’s a lot to be said for helping others (volunteering included), it benefits the giver as much as the receiver. Vlogs can be a part of that.

Lovely vlog, May. I stumbled across your channel for the first time today and have really enjoyed seeing how you spend your days. I hear you about storing stress and trauma in the body. I'm about to go to India for six weeks (solo - scared but excited!) and wondering whether or not to attend some yoga classes while I'm there. I'm stiff as a board (not helped by being seated a lot for work), not as in touch with my body as I'd like to be, and kind of feel hopeless and embarrassed about it. But I know that there is catharsis to be had there, and it's really cool and inspiring to see how much yoga means to you. Sounds like it has been transformative. So many other things I could pick up on but I'm a rambler so will leave it there. Keep on keeping on 😊

Your videos are always so relatable to. Im usually guilty as charged for not resting enough or switching off. Im currently in the process of trying to sell everything i possibly can buy a boat trailer so i can bring my boat back from Cornwall and get it fixed up. Id really love to be making content about the rebuild and conversion to a live aboard. Id really love to be making vids about rebuilding the engine, gearbox and all the other systems. Id really love to be making videos from the point of view that this is how you can do this. I dont know why but i usually feel more lonely around people. I tend to keep myself busy in social situations which is pretty easy with phones these days. But before that id go an dismantle things at random. At 10 years old i spent the entirety of the 1995 xmas holidays freezing my fingers off to rebuild a tractor that had been sitting in a hedge for 20 years. I can remember the songs playing on the radio and the newsstories. Everytime i hear those songs or news stories now, my thoughts are oh yes i rebuilt my first tractor when this happened. I guess growing up tractors and the radio were my friends. People are usually boring, they dont get why i like fixing broken stuff or the sense of pride that goes with completing a long drive in a car that you've fixed youself. A lot of people seem to go through the motions of completing tasks for fake gratification without ever enjoying what they do. Anyway back to the tedium of trying to sell stuff online. Yawns

I have found FB channels like yours very helpful when I have bouts of loneliness, during lock down I did zoom online meetings with friends, that helped a lot we did a zoom quiz night once a week, I wanted a liveaboard boat but I don't think I could handle it on my own, looking at small Springer waterbug, my thoughts are weekeds away or maybe a week or two cursing a couple times of a year, I got a beach hut so that would have to go as could not have both, just thinking about it and looking into the costs,

Hi May New to your channel so just catching up - though probably not in chronological order 😂. The ones I have seen shows how resilient and positive you can be and not work shy. I don’t know what sort of health professional you are (and I certainly am not) but I have been drawn quickly to the conclusion that yes, you have all your family and friends around you, but at the end of the day they go home. That is when it all kicks in and I feel certain you are - at this time - lonely. However, the one tool you didn’t have in your tool box is the big hug you have often mentioned craving in some of your vlogs. Stay positive and that hug will come.

I don't seek adult intimacy, but just a cuddle or to share an experience with another person would complete that empty hole. Like you said, plusses and minuses. One of the big advantages is afternoon naps! Oh yeahhhhhh.

So thank you loving your advertisement for yoga especially now I know you used to work for the nhs. I love going into a weekend after a hard weeks work, with no plans. I can go with my own flow, and take off for the day, or binge a TV series, or do diy on my boat, or any combination of those things. But importantly, I choose what suits my mood so I am rarely doing what I must do, but only what I wish to do. Not forcing yourself to do what you don't want to do means you're much more likely to get cracking on things you need to do and enjoy them more: or hate them less lol

Ey up chuck, glad to see you're happy. I'm in the same boat (love a good pun) alone but not lonely.... most of the time. These past few weeks have been bad, I got knocked off my motorbike so I've been off work, rattling round on my own all day, luckily I've been finding channels like yours to ease the boredom. Keep up the good work. Have you tried making Elderberry wine? I love it warmed up in the winter. Enjoy your day =)

How long does that elderberry cordial stay Good for and is it the cloves that give it longevity? I definitely agree, it's easier to be a lone ranger these days with social media although it certainly does not cover every aspect of it, as you said, it's still nice to share a meal and I'll add a Good chat to that as well 🙂

A lovely vlog as always. Can you tell me the recipe for your elderflower cordial please? There’s a lot to be said for living alone and doing what you want. It can be hard not having someone to share your feelings and experiences with, however you’ve got us, we love you and we share your pain, your good times and your bad times. I always look forward to a vlog from May. Take care and be kind to yourself. X

The scent of lavender is good for keeping spiders away but on the other hand spiders are good fly removers. It is definitely possible to feel lonely with people around especially if they are people you don't connect with or want to be with. Following the best traditions of Blue Peter I see, "here's one I made earlier".

Instant blackberry ice cream is amazing. Freeze them loose for 24hrs, then blitz them with some sugar in a food processor or blender into granules, then add cream or crème fraiche until it forms into ice cream. Have everything ready to go as it will melt quite quickly. Gives intense ice cream headaches if you scoff it too quickly, which it is almost impossible not to do.

Hey May, I live in Germany & have just discovered you & your videos. Just out of curiosity, how many channels are there in England, & where are they all 🤷🏻‍♂️ Do you have to pay morring fees or is it free. How long can you spend in one spot at a time ? Love ❤️ from Germany.

Channels? Do you mean waterways? Google "british canal waterways map" you'll be able to see them! I dont pay for mooring fees because I have to move every 2 weeks. But many boaters do pay for permanent moorings

When I was (much) younger, I was often lonely, more because of my own fears and insecurities about reaching out for help in dealing with past traumas due to being afraid that either I would be misunderstood, or that others just wouldn't care. Rejection is a bitter pill. One day someone who's opinion mattered to me asked me, "can you think of anything more lonely than not knowing your purpose in life?" It took me a while (years!) to come to grips with the answer, but once I started to truly understand the question, I wasn't as lonely anymore. Another "lesson" he imparted: look up the word "nature" (we had to use actual physical dictionaries back then!) and ask yourself, what's missing from the "standard" definition. I would enjoy hearing your thoughts, as well as those of your viewers. There is not necessarily a right or wrong answer, but I will share what he helped me to understand in a couple of days (give you some time to reflect), if you are interested.
