I’m almost 60 and tent camp as much as I can! I’m the one who sets up camp for my kids, their kids, significant others, and any strays who show up, then I’m usually the one who tears down camp when it’s time to go home. I also solo camp quite a bit. You’re never too old!

Been camping on whitewater rafting trips for almost 40 years. This week last year I was on the Deschutes River for five days. I am 65. I found several things that make the difference for me when camping. 1) Pack clothing to layer. 2) Wool can be your best friend, whether clothing or blanket. 3) Have a good idea of expected weather and plan accordingly. 4) If you can get off the ground (cot or hammock) you will sleep warmer. 5) You are your own best heat source. Stoke that furnace with complex carbs and plenty of protein so you can keep warm. 6) Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. 7) Do not neglect your own personal care when you are camping. In fact, you should pay more attention, as you are now more subject to the effects of exposure to sun, wind, etc. Don't risk sunburn or getting chapped - it will rob you of sleep and make you uncomfortable. It is easy to get hypothermic when sunburnt as our body goes into overdrive to cope with the burn and can make cold exposure worse. 8) Have a good first aid kit, but use your brain if there is something you lack. I once scratched a finger, and dang if it didn't hurt like the dickens. Scope mouthwash to the rescue. It took out the sting, disinfected a bit and made the rest of the trip better. 9) Camp lazy. Do what is necessary to have a nice camp, but you don't have to try to earn any scout badges by going on any death march hikes or exerting yourself more than usual. 10) Relax, have a good time, ask for help if you need it, pitch in where you can.

I turn 62 next October, and I'm going to solo tent camp. There is so much to consider when setting up a system that works for you. I am not new to camping, but when you plan on doing it year round, that's a whole nother ball game. I am keeping it as primitive as I can without lacking for anything. More than likely state/county parks, north in the summer, then head south for the winter. Get a site for a month at a time. As long as you have your health, your never too old to do the most peaceful thing on this planet. imo.

Im almost 68 and tow a smaller rv 7000km each winter alone to AZ and boondock for 4 mths in the desert. Not roughing it like you in a tent! But i love being self reliant and enjoy the challenges everyday brings. But the most important thing is to stay active and in good shape physically and mentality otherwise its not doable.

Find a ground cover that will fit your Gazelle on top between the fly cover the top of the tent. It will help hold the heat in. Set up your Gazelle and before you put the fly on, throw the ground cover on, then the fly. Use the top poles to secure everything. You need to know the size of your Gazelle tent top (not the fly). It works. Great for winter camping.

I don't think there is an age limit on camping. I am retired and am a teardrop camper. Before I had the teardrop, though, I had a motorcycle tent camper that I towed with my car, which was a lot of fun and expanded the gear-carrying capacity of my small car.

My daughter lives near Vail and we occasionally camp on my visits from my 325 foot elevation home. I’ve never adjusted to the higher elevation. Not sure I could breathe at 11,000 feet. Hiking would be out of the question. I have a Sienna minivan set up for camping and also a gazelle tent. Im 73 and plan to camp as long as I can safely do solo.

I think your gear is why you were cold. You need a warmer sleeping bag to start with. If a storm rolls in unexpectedly and the temps fall you can be in trouble.
