I bought my first violin when I was 18 because I had a very rough childhood, even school was a huge challenge. When I started college at 18 I learned some basics and ended up quitting for several reasons that revolved around money. Four days ago, I began again. Now at 22, I'm proud to say that I have overcome my doubts. Whilest I'm not even close to playing more than one line of music, I'm so happy to play again. I feel complete with my violin. Also, I watched this video because I felt the doubt creeping in. I know I'm not a master violinist, I know that I'm not the only one starting in early adulthood on a difficult instrument.

I started playing the violin a 1,5y ago, at 18- I was hearing exactly the same things as you- additionaly a few of relatives was discouraging me and mocking by saying "pha, you can't do it, look at you, you never wont learn how to play it, you only wasted your money, can you finally stop playing this shit, I have a headache" and so on, what made me cry soo many many times. It was so painful to hear, especially from relatives, but I said to myself- who cares? it makes me happy, it makes me feeling satisfied, I'm proud of myself that I can play (theres still a lot of work on this path in fact, but im actually pretty happy with my skills after so short time) a lot of songs, especially of Lindsey Stirling's, which are sooo difficult. Everyone was saying "its max a month and she will throw it away". I will never EVER unlove with violin and I will never stop playing! The point is to NEVER give up if something gives you happiness. YOU have to be happy with what you do and what you aim at, no matter what other people say :) Goodluck with learning! I'm taking lessons only from Alison on YT, it provided me so ...cking much skills :) She's totally amazing and I'm extremly grateful for her, for taking her time in doing all of these videos

Let me tell you that you are the perfect age to start learning! I was fifteen when I started to learn the piano, and had no teacher, so it took quite awhile to learn to read, play the notes, fingering and finally play. I am an old man(66) now but can play very well and almost anything, and the keys for you are: passion, love of the violin, and determination to succeed. You'll have to commit yourself to learn , there will be many mistakes and frustrations but DON'T QUIT! Open your mind and your heart and see yourself playing beautifully , impressing not only yourself, but others. With You Tube, you have the advantage (which we didn't) of listening to and watching all the greatest violinists in the world for free! Watch , study and learn from this. These people who say these negative things SECRETLY want you to give up and not try, or that you'll lose interest because they are afraid that you may show them up , so they want you to fail so that THEIR failures won't seem so onerous. That's why they say these things. It's a disgusting trait that many people carry around with them. No one in my family can play anything, but they had the same opportunity as I did, so in my opinion they have missed out on a lifetime of pure pleasure in music. By the way, every hour, every day every year you spend learning the violin will pay you back many times over and you'll be able to look back in 20 years with pride and pleasure that you did it . Playing beautiful music is like a gift to yourself, and nobody can take it away from you.

I'm 30, started playing guitar at 15, and people said the same things. I mean at that age I was suffering with severe social anxiety and depression, but I didn't feel I could talk about those things. So for me, music was an outlet...a way to talk without necessarily saying a word. I think some people underestimate how important music can be to us, how much we might need it. During my music studies in college, some people would be surprised that I did have social anxiety. But when you're performing, I think, to steal the title of a Metallica song--nothing else matters. You're in the zone. I over the years also picked up bass and piano, now looking at violin--it's something that I wanted to do back in my teenage years, but wasn't feasible. I hope you've been progressing, and happy with a beautiful instrument.

I'm 19 and I recently started playing the violin, it's actually been about two weeks and I've never had any classes (yet), I only practiced like 5 hours in total, and I can already play very simple melodies without sounding too scratchy. What helped me the most is the fact that I've been playing the guitar for about 8 years, and I've got a good grasp of music theory. I've always heard that the violin is a super hard instrument and that it would take years just to sound ok, and the fretless neck always baffled me, which is why it took a few years for me to finally decide to just go for it. I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you already know your theory and you have some experience with other string instruments, but you think that you don't have enough time or patience to learn the violin, like I did for quite a while, just give it a try, it won't be as hard as you think. And if you're a complete beginner to music, just try it too, I know it's super hard at first, I remember first learning the guitar, but trust me, it will be worth it.

I would first like to thank Alison for being such a remarkable individual, there are many wonderful violinists, a few take the time to teach, fewer do so online, even fewer do so with all the tips, help and resources, even fewer would offer those resources for free, but above all, only Alison's method of teaching suits my way of learning. Her series of Learning To Play The Violin is amazing! I'm 45, and in junior school we had occasional music lessons to learn rhythm, the triangle, shakers, drum, glockenspiel, cymbal etc, I always ended up with the last on the table, the one no one else wanted or just stamping or clapping. In my senior school years music for the first two years music was compulsory, once every two wks, if (as was often the case) we were listening to a record (CD's hadn't been invented), and were asked what instrument was being played I had few problems deciding if it was a trumpet, trombone, violin, cello, harp, flute etc, I was good at that, but we never touched a instrument, the teacher would draw on the blackboard shapes, hashes, notes and told us to copy it, the one time I asked him "What does that mean?", he pointed behind him to the blackboard and said "It's up there", the kids laughed, I never asked again, he was more interested in teaching those kids that had a more natural talent and out of a school of 1200 kids over all the secondary years I was there only about 15-20 were in the school band, only two were boys, over half the band was woodwind and brass. When those two years were up I had about 10 pages of copied 'stuff' from the blackboard, but I still couldn't read music, let alone understand sheet music. I held a secret admiration for a girl in my class who did take music, she played violin. but she was too smart and clever for me to get near, in all the top classes where as I was just rubbish at everything except metalwork and computing. My parents got me a organ, play by numbers it was, great at the time, but I learnt numbers, I had no idea that middle C was 1, D was 2 and so on. As I got older I collected some CD's of classical music that was a weekly magazine issue, it at least added to my love of listening to instruments, but it was £5 so that was expensive, In my 20's I suffered a severe breakdown, (now the medication I continue to take makes learning/remembering anything five times harder), but a couple of months ago I brought myself a violin, I just needed too, and with Alison's tutorials I'm progressing, slowly, but that's me! I've learnt how to read basic music (another of Alison's lesson's), and can now even write down on sheet music what I'm discovering by ear, often by accident. My only downfall now seems to be that I have short fingers! Grrr!... And multitasking right arm movement/position with left hand/finger position isn't exactly working too well, but I'm so enjoying my new found skills, I just wish I had more time to practice. I totally intend to keep at the violin, not because of the money I've spent or to make up for the years lost not learning, but because even with my poor playing at the moment, I feel inside myself a love for the music I'm hearing resonate from a instrument I've always loved, especially when I get even just a bar or two near perfect, that to me is an amazing feeling...

Thank you for posting this...I am 39 and I have always wanted to play an instrument and when I was a kid, my Mother always told me no, even though she learned Piano and Clarinet. In any event, I always wanted to learn to play something and now that I am grown and finally have a job that can support lessons, I am jumping in with both feet. I bought a Violin AND A CELLO this week and have been watching tons of videos. I start taking lessons next week, so I just wanted to say THANK YOU for letting folks know that it is never too late to start something wonderful and exciting. Get out there and DO SOMETHING!!!! Well, I am 65 and received my violin for Christmas. It's amazing what awful sounds can come from this instrument, but I am having fun and slowly starting to sound better. Thankfully, my neighbors are too far away to hear. Thanks for these videos! I think it's because of them that I am actually improving! I also play the guitar and two sizes of ukulele so was under the impression that since on the violin you only play one note at a time (unless you play fiddle double stops) it would be easier than the guitar. Well, I was wrong about that. Might be true if you just plucked the notes. The bow is pretty tricky too. I am confident it will all come together at some point. Meanwhile, I am having a blast!

I was too young at 5 years old when my grandparents pushed me into learning the piano, my teacher was about 70 years old had a very dark and dingy house with an aspidistra in the window and the house smelled of mothballs, I just hated it. Im 70 and started a year ago and am just loving it, and making really good progress too. My ambition is to join the local string orchestra and I practise about 3 times a day for short periods. (Incidentally I'm left handed so don't let that put you off.) These videos are absolutely fantastic and now I'm including vibrato in my daily practices. Thank you Alison!

Slightly off the age subject, I have found that the best way for me to learn is to learn as many songs as I possibly can and of different styles if possible. After a while you should begin to connect the dots, learning which chords work together and how they relate to one another. I have never learned to read sheet music to the point that I could play it in real time. The best I can do is decipher it if I cannot figure a part out by ear. But, after learning many many chords and experiencing the use of those chords in certain songs, my ear has improved to the point that I can easily recognize many of them in new songs I am learning. My main point here is..... LEARN as many songs as possible and your playing ability will continue to improve! BTW...this woman puts a smile on my face every time I watch her videos and hear her talk :)

So as I live alone now,(I am a widow) I thought I would try to learn the Violin. With the help you give I am making steady, albeit slow progress, I have found that the memory does let me down but if I write down the key points if I am starting a new section that really helps. My stumbling block has been that because I played the piano years ago, I thought that reading music would be the least of my problems....wrong.... That has been the worst part, so I am now brushing up a bit on the piano so that music is now beginning to make sense again, so when I pick up my violin the notes on the page are no longer the hard bit, it's just a case of remembering which finger goes where to create the right sound.Thank you Alison

Started learning the violin about two months ago at 52, now 53 and quite surprised to say it's going quite well, though some moments are better than others, but then it is the violin! I've wanted to learn this particular instrument since I was about 5 or 6 but there's always been something else preventing me getting on with it. I have one violin book giving the beginner basics and Alison's videos. These, together, with watching and listening to professional player videos and CDs is helping with what seems to be rapid progress to me at this stage, though I suspect they'll be a brick wall or two ahead to get through. Very glad I got around to this at last as its also providing me with a sense of purpose in difficult personal circumstances. Thanks for this video, Alison, as it is a boost for us oldies!

I'm 22 years old now and I only started a month ago. Ive always loved the violin and wanted to be able to play it. I have anxiety issues and some joint issues so my classes didnt go too well and had to move states so now Im using your videos and other tutorials and the materials my teacher gave me to practice on my own now. Because Im a medical student I dont have time to really practice and fatigue comes really easily. I couldnt do it when I was younger because of strict upbringing and Im absolutely resolute on ensuring that my future children will not have to experience the same. I am often disheartened by seeing young virtuosos or seeing me not make much progress by myself; but because I love the instrument so much and have indulged myself into the wonderful world of classical music; I have been trying hard to remain hopeful and optimistic. After all, I realize I know much more today than I did a few months ago and that is enough hope to get me going forward. I sometimes wish I could give up some of the things that consume too much time in my life and completely devote to this skill, but the world is not ideal and we are obliged to compromise because we have only one shot at life. Videos like this make me feel like I have a chance if I strived so thankyou! :D

I have to thank you for sharing your knowledge this channel! I started playing violin when I was 8-years-old and played for 10 years, but I never had a single private lesson due to lack of resources. I played for my school orchestra, practiced and struggled hard to get to the same level as the other students, but always felt a little behind. Over 10 years later, I finally live in a place where I have my own space to pick it up and practice again! Even though I still may not have the resources for private lessons, it's something I'm heavily considering for when my circumstances change. Until then, I can't tell you how grateful I am to have your videos as a resource. KZbin wasn't around when I was growing up, and little lessons like techniques for changing positions, perfecting vibrato, and ways to improve sight reading weren't available for me then, but now I can watch you and others teach concepts like these at the touch of a button. It's wonderful, and in the six months since I've picked up the violin again, I feel that I've already improved a great deal. I'm going to keep watching and practicing!

I started having lessons at the age of 53 and loved it. Had no problems physically at least! Sadly due to change in personal circumstances had to give it up three years later. Started again (just teaching myself this time) about five months ago at the age of 60 and I'm really enjoying it. I also have far more time to practice now and feel I'm making good progress, although of course without a teacher I have to rely on my own subjective opinion. As you're still a youngster I'd say go for it!

I played the viola in middle school for one year (around age 13) before changing to the trumpet for one more year, then no other instrument since. Now I am 36, and my 11 year old wants to play the violin next year in school, and I will be buying one for myself and one for her. I plan on getting some very basic practicing in with her before she gets "real" training at her school. She's really excited that I plan on playing one myself as well. She wants me to eventually play live as "The Bald Bearded Violinist." ;-) No matter how bad I might be at it, I am super excited to learn along with my daughter and practice together, neighborhood cats' ears be damned. :-D

I played piano for many years (I started playing when I was about 8 years old and went well into my 20s...and played in churches into my 30s) and then dropped off...my husband drops little hints for me to get back to playing...like moving the piano into plain sight in my home office (...so that it is in the backdrop when I do webinars) :)... TOTALLY agree.....however, I was made to play pieces i didnt particularly like, but I thanked my violin teacher (and piano) in the end because sometimes when we want to do what 'we' want, we tend to stick to a certain comfort zone, so doing other pieces outside of this makes our learning and knowledge broader.

Hi Alison. I started playing violin when I was 5 & stopped when I was 19 - 50 years ago - mainly because I wanted to play more 'sociable' instruments like piano & guitar. I've been teaching the piano & keyboard for the last 12 years but I'm now largely retired & decided to renew my acquaintance with the violin. For fun, I bought an NS Design electric model which I can work with 'silently' or plug it into my keyboard! It's quite strange how much I've forgotten but also how much I remember. Many of my generation, often pushed by parents, took up piano or violin only to give up as soon as we could. I've taught a few of those & helped them realise that music could be fun after all ^_^ Your videos have been helpful & inspirational & I'm practicing regularly to recover my long lost vibrato technique! Never too old. I'm soon to be 64 and recently retired. I've played guitar, steel guitar, dobro and banjo for many years. Just now taking up violin and piano. I have no delusion of being a world class violinist or pianist but I love learning and music and it keeps the "fog" from setting in my brain. Thanks Alison for the services you provide. I'm 35 years old and have been wanting to learn to play an instrument for YEARS but no instrument ever really "spoke" to me. A year or two ago I heard Lindsey Stirling for the first time and was hooked to her music. At some point I started envisioning myself playing a violin and wasn't put off much by it. But I've been known to have flights of fancy, I want something for a while then get bored of it. It's been over a year now and nearly every day I've thought about a violin but still at my age was worried about it. I've watched a few violin teaching videos and was very glad when I came across your channel. I've finally decided that I'm going to go pick up and rent a violin for a little while and I'll be going through all your lesson videos and then look at actual lessons. Learning to read music is one of the most terrifying portions for me because I'm afraid I won't be able to do it. The few videos of yours I've watched have definitely put me at ease and I'm very anxious to get a violin in my hands especially after watching this video. it gives you a goal and makes you work to the peak of your ability. I wouldnt worry about exams at this stage - get a violin and start learning first then you can think about them if and when the time is right for you.

Hello again Alison, My name is Bradford Smith and I am 38 years old. My grandfather (Barney Bradford Hicks) played the violin for everyone but he died when I was no more then a year old. My mother (Janice) truly misses hearing him play. I am a pastor in a church now and we need more kids to be introduced to this wonderful sounding instrument as well as the adults. my soul purpose in life is to bring joy into the lives of others and I believe that you do that quite well. I have always wanted to be able to play an instrument since i was young, but i never took any music lessons (because money and time). Recently i feel the eagerness to play, and just picked up my sister's violin that has been kept in the storage room for almost more than 6 years. Then i found your videos and i love the way you give us the details (i think I've never found such video lessons like yours) and they helped me a lot. I have zero experience on music and i just rely on your vids. My colleague said that it was too late for me to start learning but i said better late than never. But with the practices i did, i questioned myself if i really be able to do it. I lost my confidence that someday i would play for my family on Christmas, or in the church. I almost lost my hope that i maybe shouldn't dream that big bc learning an instrument is just hard. So thank you Alison, i really need the motivation. I found new hope with my violin, because to me it's more than i wanna show people that i can play violin, i just love music. I think what you do is more than just giving lessons to people. I am nearly 61 picked up a violin and it felt so natural, I was able to play right away. I tried guitar when I was a teen and played piano since I was 5 years old, at the very first try my mother called out from the living room as she though that it was my big sister who had been told to run an errand. Loved the positivity of this video! I played piano and guitar all my life but always wanted to learn violin. My youngest played violin for 8 years before the lite bulb went on that it was me that wanted to play violin and he wanted to play guitar. So we switched. I was 50 at the time and he now is the proud owner of my guitars and I ought my own violin a year later. Unfortunately, I sprained my left wrist 2 years into my new passion and am just now getting back to my practicing. Do not think you are too old. Age is a state of mind and if you love something like the violin, do it. It is an incredible feeling when you can play your first song!

rushiop rusho dude im 26 and ive been playing guitar since i was 12 and i got a violin about 2 months ago. knowing guitar helps alot as far as note/string memorization. as for finger placement, ive played a fretless bass since i was 16 so it comes naturally for me to memorize finger placement, but if ur already musically inclined, then you can learn any insturment as long as u put ur mind to it and practice practice practice

Well I have recently turned 60 and live in a rural part of Australia. I have just purchased my first violin and felt it was time to expand my musical knowledge into a new area. I am currently a classically trained Baritone for which I only started taking lessons in my 50's and sing every day. I felt it was time to exercise the brain cells again and learn something new. As someone who has learned a few instruments as an adult, I can definitely say you are never too old. The most important is: don't practice to get better, but learn to enjoy practice AND get better. You can structure your daily practice to improve and learn but it will only get you as far as you can have fun. I started learning violin less than a week ago and so far, I get excited every scale that doesn't sound (too) horrible, I laugh every bad squeaky note, I'm trying to play simple songs and I'm having a ton of fun. All that really matters is to have a great time, so much you can't wait to get back at it the next day. Then before you realize it, you'll be good and be able to express yourself through that instrument. And though you'd be wrong to think you won't get better, it'll still be time well spent as much as you have fun spending it.

As far back as I can remember I have loved hearing violin music. At age 66, a grandmother, I work full time and I am a beginning violin student. It is a great personal outlet for me. It has always been my favourite instrument and I love how it's sound sings to your heart. I questioned my age and was totally reassured I will do it if I am dedicated. Well, I am and I learn a lot from your videos, so thank you. I came from a very poor family and music lessons where not on the agenda. My last child is finishing school and I thought of what I could to do and after a long time wondering it came to me. I am approaching 50 and just took up violin ( fiddle) and banjo. This is so much better and easier that when I tried to play guitar as a child and teenager. At my age I am doing this because I want to and it makes me happy, and that makes all the difference in the world, As a child lessons and practice were just one notch above punishment, and I choose a guitar to be cool and be like everyone else. I have always loved the banjo, and in 4 months have made much more progress than I expected to or ever did as a child with guitar, and I just recently got a Mendini MV400 violin because I rediscovered that playing instruments is so much fun. Alison, I'm 64 and my violin has been sitting in my house 25 + years with that same want of learning. You're inspiration has motivated me out of those stages of indifference and I now join those 5 yr olds. Thanks for the inspiration and ....love the Christmas book. The previous player of this instrument must have been a meticulous musician who left tear off calendar pages of notes of events and string changes... all from the early 1930's inside the case. Yes why not. I play by ear all the time as it helps me learn pieces faster. I listen to the pieces until my ears bleed, then i look at the sheet music but i dont have to concentrate hard or read it throughly as i play 50% by ear and 50% looking at the music.

I have two daughters, one 24 and one 4, my 4 year old wanted to take violin lessons so we finally found someone to give them and I go to the lessons with her every Thursday and the teacher suggested if I had ever wanted to learn violin to pick up a cheaper violin and practice with with my daughter to hold her attention longer and make it more enjoyable. I am 47!! No music ability to speak of but I decided to take the jump and try it out. Found violin online for about $250 on Craigslist and only had it a couple weeks but enjoying it greatly. While searching for a way to tune my violin I came across your videos and love them, so feel like I am getting double the lessons, could listen to you (and watch) easily for long periods of time! My biggest problem is being impatient, I want to know how to play it quickly! Ha! So I know this will help me to gain more patients! Thanks and we'll see how this journey goes!
