I am pretty sure that it's about herself, in fact. She said once that she's always identified with the “coffee scene in ‘Moscow on the Hudsons’”, where a character is so overwhelmed by the options at a supermarket that he breaks down and cries (“I just want some coffee…!”). The “hateful” middle-8 (“murderous monosyllabic moron with no sense of purpose, working on your songs all night to justify your worthlessness”) is what she thinks when her self-doubt kicks in. This is my impression.

It can be seen in different ways: mostly it talks about focusing on all the possible future «yous» that you won't ever be instead of focusing on who you are and on the one person you're going to be able to be. It's about letting all that worry go, choosing one thing and running with it fearlessly.
