@@jamestcatcato7132 Political animals do action, so true but no more than for democracy. Two irreconcilable paradigms or ideologies for resolving the perennial problem of power for the running of a government, with different philosophical assumptions about everything. The main difference, in my opinion, is that democracy has a generative outlook while fascism upholds the values of violence and nihilism. At the fundamental level, I suspect they both come from different brain-mind structures for informing action and being. That, maybe, big perhaps, even precedes human psychology and exists already embedded in the evolutionary history of biology. As in the difference between a bee hive that lives in generative harmony with its environment, and a swarm of locusts. Having said that, the Democratic Athenians time after time chose and voted for war over peace with its neighbors. So, it's complicated. But what is not controversial is the traditional morbid fascination that fascists in all eras of history have always had with domination, violence and death. Democratic predispositions tend to go the other way, toward art and the ideals of justice and equality.

Interestingly veterans are given priority in hiring in police departments across the country. They account for 50% of unlawful conduct. Imagine being trained to kill people of color while in the army, etc. and then being put on the street with a gun. Serving in the military in war zones makes one suspicious, fearful and ready to defend yourself. Six weeks police training is not enough time to deprogram an ex-serviceman and expect them to act like a civilian in confronting the public.
@sands7779

Propaganda to get people to engage in a war civilian and military, particularly when it is not on on their soil, usually dehumanises another ( the "enemy") and so easier for them to dehumanise others after the war.

Professor Belew's best interview, so far. For the first time I heard the professor talk about the deep roots of this insurrectionist movement going back to the 1860's and the KKK's America First ideology. But we are still not talking about the funding. The cozy relationship between white, nationalist armed racist paramilitary forces, and plutocratic support from the libertarian worldview. Both loath the state and the federal government. And we are not describing the full extent of the clear, present threat to democracy these groups represent if we leave out the financial support that undergirds them.

What you mention here is also an international concern including these movements all over Europe (and elsewhere) and the network and money trail extends beyonf borders. Nationalists all have this in common, and support other nations nationalist and white supremacy agenda.
@junanougues
@junanougues 2 жыл бұрын
@@gnarbeljo8980 The fact of this "Nationalist" matter in the USA is that the Republican Party has been hijacked. And shaped substantially by the ANTI-DEMOCRATIC billionaires of the radical Right. That OWN a political machine. Organized in all the states, for instance, for attacking the vote on a national scale. A political machine organized to attack any deviation from their plutocratic agenda. That loathes democracy no less than the paramilitary neo-nazis they fund as armed appendages of THEIR GOP. Why isn't Professor Belew and Amanpour addressing the entire and potentially very violent system of insurrection that, obviously, includes the funders?
@gnarbeljo8980
@gnarbeljo8980 2 жыл бұрын
@@junanougues I'm surprized the US has insisted for so long on the two party system. If the political system allowed more parties like in many other democracies it might be easier also for voters to know exactly who represents their political viewpoint. The original ideas that each party would sort things out amongst themselves as obviously there are alot more than only two people harbour, stopped working a long time ago. It may not be a solution to what you're proposing here, but at least it's fairer to the common voter, more directly democratic, and more transparent when for instance nationalists are hijacking whether it's the money or the popular vote. Fascists depend alot on the working classes. Always did, btw. Paramilitary groups are also ALOT harder to prevent in nations where there are alot more advanced weapons than people and it's a free for all to arm onesself for any reason innjust about any situation. Americans have an internal arms race going on, and it won't end well. Meanwhile nobody cares if regulated firearms would prevent mass shootings at schools, armed robberies etc. It's so weird, the US has all these escalating 3rd world problems but just refuses reform to modernize and evolve with current times. There's something very deeply fundamentalist about it, and the radicalized right and ultra religious right both tap perfectly into that.
@junanougues
@junanougues 2 жыл бұрын
@@gnarbeljo8980 Wonderful post, thank you! And I agree with everything. Although even a multi-party system is no guarantee of anything. France is going through some far right and left issues at the moment. But a two party system is just asking for it. Basically, they have been a tag team since at least Reagan and Clinton and Bushes and Obama. And then Trump upset that dynamic. And everything is pushed even further to the right. In my opinion, driven by obscene amounts of money. There has always been a thriving anti-democratic market, including the Federalist Society which has taken over the Supreme Court after relentless and very patient ant work of decades. But, on the other end, the low information voters were also targeted. Public education has been carpet bombed out of existence and schools have been turned into HR departments. Then there is the media at all levels from Sinclair to Fox News to the lukewarm mainstream news which loves to pretend we still live in a functional two party system. Science and the life of the mind as well as the value of factuality and intellectual integrity has been thoroughly denigrated. So what else is left? Public television has been thoroughly transformed into a corporate mindset, as well. Then there is the demographic change injecting fear into millions of white people that don't like change and are acutely insecure. Plus, the ever widening income gap, with loss of well paying manufacturing jobs coinciding with 4 decades of stagnant wages, and we have what we see now: a mass pathology of resent, anger, and insecurity. Ideal for the extreme Right and demagogues like Trump to exploit, the perfect storm. And thing about democracy, it's a high maintenance project, just ask the Athenians. Someone like Trump would have been exiled for ten years and Socrates was not executed for nothing, a total pain in the neck.

Let’s not forget that the planners for the “official” January 6 Rally at the Ellipse were aware at least as early as 2 days before the event that Trump had *always planned* on directing the mob to the Capitol - he just wanted it to _appear_ spontaneous. That’s why Trump lunged at his Secret Service after the Rally when they refused to take him to the Capitol. This fascist, this tyrant, this demagogue had been planning on being there, to gleefully delight in watching his devoted followers as they violently overthrew our democracy - which they tried to do all because of the Big Lie. All because of him.

Tarrant County Sheriff’s Department & CPS wrongfully separated my family for five months in 2017 & I was threatened to stop writing about politics if I wanted my sons returned. I graduated from UNT to teach American History & I had thought myself free to write about politics. It’s terrifying that the white nationalists have infiltrated our police department here in the most populated red county in the nation & that the leader in members of Patriot Front that lives in my area are free to write about politics and plot violence, while peaceful protestors here who are marching to protect women, minorities & LGBTQ+ are being g terrorized by our own government. We are living like political prisoners here. Sheriff Waybourn is connected to Dr John Eastman & Donald Trump nicknamed our city, “Ground Zero” for his attack on women, minorities and LGBTQ+. It’s been hard to process being terrorized by our own families and friends here in Fort Worth, yet we are proud to have stood on the right side of history and believe that ultimately the corrupted & violent authorities here in Texas will be held accountable. I’m grateful for the women that refuse to not write about the history that is happening right now, because here in North Texas, our families are being terrorized as the authorities try to suppress our own political opinions. Pray for the families here in Texas being terrorized by the MAGA officials here that support domestic terrorism & continue to try to legitimize mob violence and calls to publicly execute our fellow citizens. Patriot Front was not put under surveillance and North Idahoans were put in danger, while the authorities here would invest so much time attacking Democrats peacefully protesting against the rise of white nationalism. It’s been so scary, yet we are pulling together as Texans and campaigning to try to help save our democracy from these violent tyrants. Please pray for my babies. They were terrorized because their mom thought herself an equal and free to write about politics. Please pray for my husband who was threatened by MAGA officials to not sympathize with me. Please pray for me, as it’s been so hard to live in the same county that terrorized our babies.

Even with TX voter suppression laws and the white hate groups trying to intimidate voters and elections workers, I still have faith that Beto will win. Proselytizing and conversion in embedded in Christian salvation. Purity and homogeneity is a premise of racism. Dominance and control are the essence of masculinity and patriarchy. The movement doesn’t just want to convince you, eventually it cannot permit or tolerate deviance from norms and structures from which it derives its meaning. Other religions, family structures, sexual identities, and races have to be purged or put in their place. Any other form of authority is a threat.

Let's not forget that 11 House Republicans attended a White House meeting with Trump to strategize about overturning the election results on January 6. Six of them later asked for pardons. Does the Federal Rico Act apply here? Here are the 11 House Republicans who were at the December 21, 2020, meeting, according to the White House visitor logs obtained by the January 6 panel. In the final days of Trump's administration. Six of the attendees of the December 21, 2020, meeting - Biggs, Brooks, Gaetz, Gohmert, Greene, and Perry - sought pardons. They all collaborated to commit crimes against the American people and the US Government. Rep. Mo Brooks of Alabama Rep. Brian Babin of Texas Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona Rep. Andy Harris of Maryland Rep. Jody Hice of Georgia Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio Rep. Scott Perry of Pennsylvania Rep.-elect Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia and the many more who are guilty of committing crimes against the American people. Indict them all and sort their criminal azz out later while they sit in prison.

A large faction of white power activists infiltrated the Black Lives Matter movement in Austin last year during demonstrations in front of police headquarters. They attempted to incite violence against the police and tried to make it seem like it was in the name of the movement. Fortunately, the leaders of the Black Lives Matter demonstration were powerful speakers and had been mindful to instruct the protestors that we were there only for a peaceful demonstration, but they could not have prevented the violence of this huge gathering that outnumbered our peaceful protestors. Police were forced to intervene, though the actions they took proved fatal for completely innocent parties. It was almost as if they were on the side of the bigots. The white power activists chanted "F* the Police" and other slogans that seemed like they could be related to the movement, but were there with their own agenda. There were pictures of a group of white men physically assaulting a black police officer that were circulated in the media as a denouncement of the Black Lives Matter movement. I never understood in such a direct way how nothing that we see in the media is as it seems. Nothing, in reality, is as it seems. It cannot be overstated the importance of good people showing up to counteract the wicked, and to witness the truth. History is in the hands of those who take action.

When I say Fascist this is what I mean. And from my immense survey sampling of One, When that one looks around our Earth, he sees that everywhere, one out of 4 people have concurrently most of these qualities. >>> A FASCIST is a PERSON who believes or acts as if: 1.) They have found and belong to the One True and Pure Gang. 2.) They are superior to everyone who does not belong to their Gang, who looks different. and who acts and thinks differently than they do. 3.) They have a need to find a Charismatic One True Leader to cheer them on and feed them a doctrine to live by. 4.) They alone must control the power to rule over all the people and all the land around them. 5.) They can seize and hold on to this power by any means available. 6.) They are always threatened or assaulted by the "Others" and "Lessers" who do not belong to their One True and Pure Gang. 7.) They are granted by their leaders the authority and privilege to subjugate, attack, harm, and kill the "Others" and "Lessers" who threaten them. >>> Any person who exhibits a preponderance of these characteristics is, by their own actions, a Fascist. >>> "Fascism" is a useless word. "Fascism" requires a doctrine, a political movement, a social organization. and other things official. "Fascist" is a real word. It describes every person on earth who chooses to join a gang and act our the broadly known behaviors of "Fascist activity." "Fascism" is meaningless without a gang of Fascists. A gang of Fascists does not need a doctrine or even their intensely desired Charismatic Leader in order to vent their destructive actions on the lives around them. They are a wanton Cabal just by their confederation.

Midwestern states, traditionally Republican white farmers kids joined the military in droves to not farm. It's definitely an ideology to go along with the status quo and don't do too much thinking on your own. Move or be ostracized or worse, if you're different in some way. Money and power is the goal, not to be Christian. I've sat in on town meetings where they talk like the government is a separate entity that gives them money. Each little town, every 25 to 30 miles apart is in itself a example of a mini culture. Many of them have little museums about massacres. They took the land and nobody new is allowed to settle there anymore is basically the attitude. Quite frankly, as a person from New England, I'm wiser but sadder too.

That's a convenient assessment if your intention is to marginalize half of the population, but it's not accurate. All of the GOP neither can or should be "disciplined", and saying so is irresponsible. We live in a two party system, and saying we should only have one is not the solution. According to the latest New York times poll, less than half of republicans support Trump. We should be encouraging the conservatives that want to differentiate themselves from the radical elements if we want to diminish the strength of extremism.

I’m glad that the depravity of the goals of this movement (e.g., “all white planet achieved through profound violence and asymmetric warfare”) are at least understood by some people that are in mainstream spaces in society. Too many simply don’t understand the extent of the most extreme goals of the movement-which would make the worst supervillains blush. I do think that this work can be coupled with a thread from Graeber and Wengrow’s book (I’m sure it’s also present elsewhere) that highlights the human needs that this movement fulfills for its adherents while at the same time unleashing some of the most vile tendencies to which humans can be given. That is something that makes the movement (and other movements during other times) so socially combustible, only in this case the combustion process is catalyzed by (a) how easily weapons can be accumulated (and the disproportionate accumulation in the population), and (b) how easily communication, coordination, and cohesion can be accelerated and solidified amongst ppl vis-a-vis the internet. I wish ppl at least understood the nature of the treat that is in the offing, even if (for various reasons-but that doesn’t/won’t stop them from trying) the most extreme ends are not practically achievable by the movement.
