In Washington, D.C., the investigation into the January 6th insurrection continues. Details are emerging about efforts made by Donald Trump and his allies to overturn the 2021 presidential election. Mike Giglio is a journalist whose focus is on war, terrorism and national security. In his latest piece for The Intercept, he profiled Stewart Rhodes, founder of the Oath Keepers, a U.S. paramilitary group that took part in the insurrection. Giglio joins Michel Martin to discuss who he is and what drives him. This interview is part of Exploring Hate, our ongoing series on antisemitism, racism and extremism.
Originally aired on March 31, 2022.

Oathkeepers started before 2009. I remember after I had come back home from serving as a US Army reservist in 2005, I had received an email from a local chapter of Oathkeepers to join up. It was specifically targeted to military service members. I joined up under the impression that it was just a group of veterans who wanted to continue PT and military exercises to stay sharp and in shape. I quickly realized that it was a sneaky attempt to recruit right-wing nuts hellbent on forming militias. I immediately resended my membership. It went directly against my oath to protect and defend the Constitution and the American way of life.

It would have been a bad move to pardon the people you're going to pin it on. Stewart should understand all this. Did you say he went to Yale? The one in Connecticut?? Seems like all the worst human beings in this country, people like Donald trmp and Ted Cruz and the other Republican leaders graduated from Ivy League schools. So the ivy league has been turning out some of the most disgraceful, immoral, unethical dishonest and disgustingly ignorant human beings on the planet. Those Republicans are the ones who brought the lunatic fringe right into the conservative mainstream. It's called the MACM, Modern American Conservative Movement. It's comprised of four main elements, 1) Republican Party 2) Unified "Conservative Media " 3) Religeous Zealots 4) Ultra Nationalist Violent Extremism And the narrative that is completely controlled by the MACM is absolutely 100% driven by fear hatred and intolerance.

Then again Mr Rhodes seems to have rejected his deep rooted heritage in every possible way, and colluded with the then presidential candidate, who opened his 2016 campaign by totally demonizing and insulting Mr Rhodes people. And of course ex President Trump got at least partly on keeping the migrant Mexicans out of America at all costs. Mr. Rhodes it seems has also given up his family name. Who knows.

Because the terrorists don't think they are terrorists, and law enforcement only goes after terrorists who are NOT white Christian right wingers; THEIR terrorism is called "traditional values" and consists in a social attitude of impunity for violence as long as it flows 'down' according to the prescribed hierarchy of abuse. It is the identification with this hierarchy of permitted violence that Trump accessed with all those stump speeches about how GREAT is was to see a cop beat a black kid, and telling cops NOT to be careful not to hurt people they arrest, and encouraging the beating of protestors and journalists who, he exulted, would have been "carried out in a BOX" in the 'good old days' (when Klan violence reigned). His cult is pretty exactly made up of the segment of America for whom the spectacle of bloodshed is devoutly to be wished, people who are enraged at the idea of anyone escaping punishment for their "inferior" traits; the sort who vote against social programs THEY THEMSELVES NEED unless they can make sure nobody "Else" gets any.

Education by its very definition is supposed to enlighten people's minds, not darken them. It is appalling that someone with such a high level of education----from Yale, no less----should possess a mind so full of ignorance-fuelled bigotry that he would electively go down such a dark and dangerous path, recruiting others to go down it with him. It is also shocking that the son of a Mexican migrant woman should so despise that part of who he is as to actively support the platform of violent racism and xenophobia that lies at the foundation of radical right-wing militia groups like the Oathkeepers.

Sorry for my not perfect English: I am originally from Russia, but live for 18 years in Canada. I was born and lived in USSR as well. I have visited the USA many times in the past and noticed that the American society was marching towards USSR for many years. Despite some people mistakenly thought that USSR had communism, it was not true. USSR and Russia have never had communism or even socialism (a stage before communism). It has a totalitarianism or dictatorship. That is why it was so scary to see the signs of it in the American society. This is what happens when the country allows for years Russian state propaganda tools RT (Russia Today), Sputnik and so on to talk to over 80 million people in the USA. This is what happens when you elect a president who wants to be a dictator and who is telling lies to the people in his country. Of course, the man you are talking in the video expected his president to free him because Mr. Trump personally invited people to march to the Capitol (it is all in the video you showed a piece of). What other proofs of his guilt do you need? You elected a corrupted man to be your president. Mr. Trump did not hide that he is admiring Russian president Putin very much. He said so on many occasions and keep saying it even now. Look at the war in Ukraine. Look at Russians! Many of them still believe that either there is no war (they forbidden to even use the word “war”. Russians are calling it a “special operation”) or that Russians (who attacked Ukraine for no reason whatsoever) are good guys there! Every American (or other person) who is watching only one source of news and who is admiring so called “strong leaders” - look at Russia now. This will be YOUR future. If you will continue to show the USA and the world that your president Trump is above the law, if you allow some of your news spread the lies and get away with it, if you will continue to admire Putin - the butcher of Ukraine - this will be your future and it is coming. I hope that people in the USA will stop seeing each other as supporters of one party or another and finally will see each other as Americans. The division among you is supporting Putin. The people who divide you are bad people even if they are your politicians. Americans, unite! Please, help the world to stop the dictators. Help Ukraine and Russia. Help yourself.

This is the result of many years of teaching nothing but American mythology, instead of actual history. Both have their roles, but if you strictly teach the mythology, you end up with people like S Rhoads who go through life with a hero-complex. People need to be prepared to fight for their country if there’s an actual threat that rises, but what happens when that threat never comes? You also need to be prepared to live a normal, peaceful life without conflict, which is what everyone deserves.

This is a replay of the Confederate myth which evolved from the Reconstruction effort which failed because of that myth: the "Lost Cause" of heroes -- generals and their leaders and leadership and the post Civil War worship of them -- together with a gentile and "civilized" Southern plantation ideology which supported the myth that the "down trodden whites" who "lost" the "cause" shed their blood doing nothing more than challenging federalism which threatened their entire way of life and the economic means by which they supported that life and gentility. All part of what Matt G identifies as "American mythology." The dangers of supporting and promoting those myths is demonstrated by Rhodes et al.

@@nelumkalachuchi1154 ARTICLE IV, Sec. 3, part 3: "(3) The Confederate States may acquire new territory; and Congress shall have power to legislate and provide governments for the inhabitants of all territory belonging to the Confederate States, lying without the limits of the several Sates; and may permit them, at such times, and in such manner as it may by law provide, to form States to be admitted into the Confederacy. In all such territory the institution of negro slavery, as it now exists in the Confederate States, shall be recognized and protected be Congress and by the Territorial government; and the inhabitants of the several Confederate States and Territories shall have the right to take to such Territory any slaves lawfully held by them in any of the States or Territories of the Confederate States." That's one of many references making the institution of slavery sacred to the Confederacy. The Confederacy mostly copied the U.S. Constitution, but made changes to reflect their conviction that the Founding Fathers were mistaken in one very important respect: all races of men were created UNEQUAL, that the "white race" was inherently superior to all others, and that slavery was the only proper role for "Negroes".

@@nelumkalachuchi1154 In case it wasn't clear, my initial comment was tongue-in-cheek. The reality is that the Oath Keepers are part of the same population that comprised the Confederacy a century and a half ago. Their ancestors were called "Dixiecrats" when they dominated the Democratic Party, until LBJ passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and then Nixon convinced them to switch en masse to the Republican Party. Since then, they've been known under a variety of names, including neoconservative, Tea Party, MAGA, Trump loyalists, etc., and over the decades they've grown more and more batshit crazy.

Because we have no political tests in our recruitment. Also, we have no civics training to explain to them what the oath means and what is actually IN the Constitution before they take the oath. To many, it is like the Bible - they've never really read it (other than selected parts) don't know what is in it, but worship it. And there are educational failures - often intentional. For example, the Texas GOP has a party platform demanding a ban on the teaching of higher order critical thinking skills because they "challenge fixed beliefs, and undermine authority".

When we talk about "civil war" in this country we always think in terms of The Civil War or the War of the States; splintering along geographical lines with opposing armies. That kind of war will never happen in the US again. In point of fact, we are already in the midst of a civil war. The battles aren't being fought on fields. They are and will continue to escalate in capitol buildings, statehouses, voting stations. Sometimes they are violent. Other times they take the form of radical right gerrymandering and packing the courts with sympathetic judges.

Look up his son’s interviews on KZbin: Dakota Adams (he took his mother’s maiden name as the result of the abuse he suffered during childhood.) Understanding behavior, and what constitutes the boundaries of normal and abnormal personality, aren't things one learns in school, nor for that matter sufficiently in the course of a normal life. So disorder is something poorly understood when encountered by most people. "Education" as we think of it aren't schools of emotional intelligence, nor is general "intelligence" a simple proxy for emotional intelligence. Even a mental health 'education" has "D" students. Yet it's that 'examined life" where one can find what constitutes honest self, varieties of behavior, and where behavior can lead, both personally and within groups. AND, what constitutes extreme, dangerously disordered behavior. Trump is an extremely dangerously disordered BEAST. He was already ready to be martyred before he became president by people holding identifiable varieties of behaviors. And many of those behaviors lead inevitably to a populist, militant demonizing of "modern people". It's a commonly repeated behavioral history. In our time, our behavioral version is outlined by an anti-intellectual/anti-science/anti-humanist/pro-fascist/pro-dogma media power, and a bestial, dangerously disordered political power. They rhyme sickeningly with the worst of historical examples, as they reached some form of obliterative violence. RING THE ALARM.

But unless you’ve experienced it first hand, most never see it coming until you’ve been run over, left lying on the side of the road with nothing, & left wondering WTF just happened? Just like they have confused tribalism with patriotism. I’m tired of people co opting words and corrupting them to be unusable by anyone else. Family values for instance. We all have family values. We just have a broader definition of family.

Yes, I heard that too. I saw an interview with his ex-wife and grown up son who proceeded to describe how he did it by mistake.

How can you be betrayed by someone who's never been loyal to anyone in his life? A liar and a grifter is just the kind of flea you get up with for lying with hateful dogs.

OMG I'm crying watching this young man right now. This is the first time in a long time that I'm seeing someone from the other side of where I feel I'm at, and watching him explain how he sees things for what they truly are now, it's beautiful, and I never ever thought I'd see this. We need to find more people like him, to help get through to more of them!! They are our fellow Americans, even though we may think they are crazy and dangerous, I'd love to know that a big wakeup could happen and alot of this craziness dissapates... 🙏

Was a 17-minute story to much to sit through? This is NOT Stuart Rhodes. This is Mike Giglio, the journalist who interviewed Rhodes multiple times and wrote a book about him.

It's really wonderful to hear fact based news and perspective on these really alarming trends. I keep wondering what this Constitution is exactly that they are so militant about. Doesn't add up. On a lighter note, this do is really suiting M. Martin👌
