I had forgotten what this play was about until I watched this. It is so wonderful and funny! And yes, these were TREMENDOUSLY good actors!!! Not to sound naive, but doesn't this make Gwendolyn and Ernest 1st cousins? I suppose, though, that cousin-marriage in England at the time of this play wasn't uncommon. Such a funny play with a wonderful little twist at the end.

The film is really awesome!!! I have just a few questions I'd like to be permitted to put to everyone: What the name of that beautiful music which is played in the end of the film? and what is the type of collar of Algeron's shirt? I hope someone can help me :)
@mjremy26052 жыл бұрын
The collar on the men's shirts that looked like a clergy collar, is a paper collar from 1890's. The play was first performed in 1895. Paper collars were separate collars that the elite could wear - stiff, starched, and prevented mobility for the neck. Not practical for the working class. The music was written by Ilona Sekacz and can be heard here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5ObZZKoh7akqpI

I temporarily forgot what Wilde's endings are usually like - and that I dislike them. 'The Importance of being Earnest' and 'An Ideal Husband' both end peculiarly, with all past discrepancies being forgiven/ignored and the couples engaged/still married. However, his plays, mostly due to the absurd situations that occur in them, never fail to make me laugh and so I still very much adore watching them :)

He wasn't really her uncle though. She called him that out of respect. Well, I suppose he was sort of her adopted uncle in a way, if she was the granddaughter of the man who brought him up.

Cousins marrying was common back in the 1800s. Read Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights, Journey to the Center of the Earth, etc.

Jack and Gwendolen are first cousins. Marriages between first cousins is still legal in the UK. Some American states allow it too.

I was interested, so I looked it up - if the Wikipedia article is correct, no few than 21 American states (and Washington D.C.) allow marriage between first cousins. I was surprised at the number; I knew there were some but didn't realize there were so many.

yes but it is still legal then and now to marry your cousin as they aren' t your immediate family so it is not considered incest although marriage to a cousin is now frowned upon in most places!

Its Earnest John...the name has a john in it..how could gwendelon accept him?? And Cecily? She wanted to marry a guy named Earnest all her life, but in the end has no qualms marrying Algy...Oscar Wilde must've gone out of ideas! Nevertheless I enjoyed the move and had a great time playing Miss Prism in class..never expected her to change the plot of the play!! Wilde's sense of humour is witty..i love that!!! Awesome!!
@lalalulu11211232112 жыл бұрын
And in all defense against the marriages, Lady Bracknell never mentioned the fact that Earnest married his cousin and Algae married a girl that was only 18 while he was probably somewhere in his late twenties.

well, i think that's up to interpretation. i don't think there's enough evidence to prove either of our theories correct, although if yours is true, that would make sense.

Jack and Gwendolen are first cousins. Marriages between first cousins is still legal in the UK. Some American states allow it too. I don't believe it's very common though, although it does seem to pop up in a lot of stories, like Jane Austen books for example.
