Better tamp the gravel with a tamper, stepping on with feet will not copct enough. Make sure if you really want wood beams, joists an plywood flooring so close to the ground. Painting both sides of plywood won't let it breathe. Better to use treated plywood. Joists, beams would be better if they are pressure treated. A slab of roofing will prevent moisture wicking into the wood, blocks can wick it up.

Did you do anything to tie down the foundation in case of big wind trying to lift up the shed. You have the pier just sitting on the gravel.
@OmegaOm
@OmegaOm 12 күн бұрын
No I did not. It would take a really big wind to lift that up. Lots of cabins built like that and I had a fenced in yard with lots of foliage.. If you have a really windy area you can hammer metal stakes into the ground and strap them to the joists.

Hello, Did you use landscape fabric and gravel to prevent growth under the shed? Grass growing underneath is no good for the foundation.
@OmegaOm

It will be dark under the shed, nothing will grow. But moisture could damage under the shed, you could put a vapor barrier under it for added protection. I protected floor boards with paint and I used pressure treated wood for the foundation.

how far apart do the deck blocks need to be?? thinking of doing same thing but only 4 x8 shed plus or minus a foot or so.
@OmegaOm
@OmegaOm 3 жыл бұрын
I spaced them 3 feet apart and 5 feet apart. I would say 5 feet apart is good. I did overkill. But it depends on the thickness of your joist boards, the thicker the stronger the board and the further apart you can place your blocks. 4x8 I would use 6 blocks. 2 on the 4 side and 3 on each 8 side.

go in one foot from each end, so blocks at 1 foot, 5 foot, and 9 foot, and you only need 9 blocks that way...and install short pieces out to the rim joists although extra support with 2x6s is never a bad thing to stop bounce.
@christophercatano1848
@christophercatano1848 4 жыл бұрын
Would that be sufficient support for a shed of this size? I’m planning out my shed build and I don’t want the deck blocks to show so I was thinking about doing the same thing your suggesting but I’m not sure if that will provide enough support
@michaelott310

I had to take Dramamine for the motion sickness with the camera moving all around. I personally prefer solid concrete blocks. But I mostly like to just dig holes and pour concrete piers. You can use 2X10 lumber to span longer distances without support. You would only need about 8 holes a few feet deep around the perimeter. Then attach posts, snap a level line and trim them off. Its a lot harder than you think to get all 12 blocks the same level..

Thanks for the tips. Maybe my next shed Ill try the posts.

I'm doing exactly what Michael said. 16 x 40 building on deck blocks spaced 4 feet apart. Will use 4x4 posts and snap a chalk line for leveling. Will also use tamped down gravel under every deck block for drainage and to resist the deck blocks sinking.

Can I build it with 2× 4s
@OmegaOm
@OmegaOm 3 жыл бұрын
If you did, it all depends on how big of a shed. IF you building as big as mine then you would need more blocks and joists have to be closer together. Not to code but you can kind of get a sense by looking at it if it will hold that weight without cracking. I think if you want to save money on wood, keep the 2x6's for the foundation and maybe go 2x3's for the walls and roof.

Why not just 21 concrete block holders? I added the prices of the materials and it’s a marginal increase to what I think a more solid foundation would be. Avoiding pouring concrete as that would mean it’s no longer a “temporary structure “ and would be coded and taxed differently.

The 2x6 stick up over deck block about 3 and 1/8th inch. The panel comes down about 1 and 3/4 inch on the 2x6. These do not count the floor boards. Just make sure you build frame so the 8 foot panels meet the top plate and hang at least an inch over floor boards.

Thanks Merlin. Sorry about my focus, my DSLR's auto focus is broken, so its only manual focus. This is hard when trying to look at a small low res screen in bright sun. One day I will get a new camera.
