When I was a teenager, I always listened to the Voice of America broadcasting in Portuguese here in Brazil, I thought it was great and privileged and whenever I listen to the vignette of the radio signal I get a gratifying DEJAVU!

I've visited Delano several times and once had a wonderful inside tour, I was so impressed in the antenna switching system and the Sterba Curtains. I wished our Nation would continue supporting VOA, or lease them to State Emergency Management Agencies for HF ALE systems.

Back in my BBC days we had a Radio-Telephone system on 141MHz and the co-linear antennas were above the UHF Cylinder right at the top of the masts/towers. One weekend when I was at the Wenvoe TV transmitter (west of Cardiff) I connected my IC2E to the R//T Antenna and spoke to my friend in SE London 160 miles away! No lift - flat conditions! :-)

Piscataway, NJ had a VOA station near the Bound Brook line with a massive curtain antenna. The Piscataway Amateur Radio Club often ran a special event station annually to commemorate VOA station WBOU.

Is the VOA still broadcasting on SW? Sorry I gather this is now a museum. It’s great that they left it in place and didn’t tear it down. Maybe someday it might be used again? There isn’t a lot on SW anymore but with the recent crisis of Corona virus 3/2020 perhaps this may become active again.

The world was lucky that at the time the National Socialism and the Soviet Socialism existed, the most economically and technologically advanced country of the world happened to be democratic and had the resources to make these broadcasts. I used to listen to VOA in the late 1980s under socialism.

Wonderful tour, George and Tommy! Fascinating to see the insides of this great transmitter site after all those years of listening to VOA broadcasts in the 70's and 80's. Dave Schneider did a brilliant job of explaining the history and technicals of the operations. Thank you both for the time and effort you have taken in preparing this program. I have many SWL friends who will want to see this, so I'll be letting them know to check it out! Rob VK3BVW

I miss listening to VOA. What would it take to get this station back on line ? It seems that there is very little, if any, digital controls, so the station is virtually impervious to EMP. You never know...

So RF is more dangerous than 60 Hz power line because birds can land on 60 Hz high tension wire without being killed as long as only one wire. But RF can kill them even just one wire (2:09).

i imagine the RF burns that those sticks would cause, I know if you grab on to my antenna outside and im transmitting at full 150 watts, it'd burn ur skin quite bad. now that now, would blow you to pieces it's so powerful, I'm a ham and I have studied RF safety as part of my license class.
