Amazing abandoned ancient multilayered town אם א(ל) שקף - העיירה הדו שכבתית המדהימה והנטושה

Um A(l)-Shaqaf is an ancient abandoned dual-layered town, with a subterranean layer and an above ground layer. The subterranean town is based on natural caves in soft rock, which were expanded to create a complex of spaces for dwelling and storage, as well as tunnels and passages between them. Additional spaces were built above ground using carved stones, employing various construction techniques, vaults and impressive openings to create spacious rooms. Deep water cisterns are scattered throughout the site. The town's core extends over the hilltops, covering an area of approximately 500 dunams (about 124 acres). Agricultural areas with terraces are located on the slopes and the valleys. Archaeological findings indicate settlement during the Byzantine period. The settlement likely thrived during the Ottoman era and continued until 1948. The above-ground structures are probably from a later period than the subterranean system. The site is located in the western slopes of Mount Hebron, from where its inhabitants also came.
This video is a documentation of a comprehensive tour of the fascinating built area at the site. It allows impressions both from the subterranean spaces and from the layers above ground. The intriguing construction techniques that survived many years without maintenance are evident, as well as the dense wild spring flowers characteristic of the place. The video was filmed on March 16, 2024.
Warnings: The site is situated within an active military firing zone. The caves are home to ticks, which may carry infectious diseases. There are deep cisterns and numerous openings scattered on the site, that lead to subterranean spaces, and are difficult to spot.
אם א(ל)שקף הוא אתר של עיירה קדומה נטושה דו שכבתית: שכבה תת קרקעית ושכבה על קרקעית. השכבה התת קרקעית מבוססת על מערות טבעיות במסלע רך, שהורחבו ליצירת מערכת חללי מגורים, אחסון ומחילות ומעברים ביניהם. מעל הקרקע נבנו קומות נוספות מאבנים מסותתות, בטכניקות בניה הכוללות קמרונות אבן מסוגים שונים ומשקופי פתחים מרשימים, ליצירת חללים מרווחים. בורות מים עמוקים פזורים בכל רחבי האתר. גרעין העיר משתרע בראש הגבעות, על שטח של כ-500 דונם, ובשיפולים ובוואדיות שטחים חקלאיים נרחבים הכוללים טראסות ששימשו גם לאצירת המים. באתר ממצאי התיישבות מהתקופה הביזנטית. ההתיישבות בו התעצמה ככל הנראה בתקופה העות'מנית, ונמשכה עד 1948. המבנים העל קרקעיים הם ככל הנראה מתקופה מאוחרת יותר מאשר המערכת התת קרקעית. האתר שוכן במורדות המערביים של דרום הר חברון, משם גם הגיעו תושביו.
