I know you've got an inside track with a lot of the men on the AVP, but it would be great if you could capture the same kind of behind the scenes / mid-match commentary for the women's matches as well. That being said, the video of this match is amazing. Thanks for sharing!

I think Sponcil and Melissa are some of the great defenders in North America. I think they are shining more with their new partners.

Great quality video. You can step through frame by frame and see exactly when Brandie switches from watching the hitter to watching the ball as she goes up to block . . .

Hey McKibbin Bros: your videos are the best in terms of angles, HD, slow-mo replay, perfectly zoomed in but not overdone on every play...nice job! You put the AVP & FIVB videographers to shame. Keep 'em coming!

I haven't watched Brandie this closely before.. her serve style is wild! It's like all tricep with a super low contact point.

Great video. Sponcil is one my favorite players and so is Wilkerson. The slow motions are fantastic for technique improvement

Great to see this - wanted to be there. The court level camera is a great touch, puts you in the action.

Genuine question, does this count as a square set at 30:17? It looks so off to me but maybe its just camera angle?
@NovaNation20
@NovaNation20 Жыл бұрын
Doesn’t look square enough to me either. You have to look at where the shoulders are pointed at the moment of contact. I watch a lot of AVP and have never seen this attack get called for a double but never the “not-square” call. Needs to be enforced better.
@garbrls313

It's way off. It happened fast and the ref just made the wrong call.

Yeah, I agree. She turned a little more as she put it over so he arms didn't look exactly square with the rest of her body. That's why Brandie looked at the up ref.

I would have raised an eyebrow too....looked like she was turning a bit there as she releases the ball. I think that though Sponcil has clean sets, she brings the ball a bit too far down, that's why she's been called a few times in FIVB tournaments but seems like AVP is ok with it

Starting at 13:03 - Shouldn't the first hit after the block count as 1? I'm learning the rules and would love an explanation. I don't know why the play was called over after 2

Sorry for my english... The block count as the first contact so it was 1 with the block touch, 2 and 3. The play ended because the ball didnt cross the net:)

Is AVP much looser on calling catches but tighter on doubles?

These angles are so cool for showing the coolest perspectives, but it is a little disorienting when you flit from one end of the court to the other. It's hard to track the play and what the defense was doing and what the shot actually was. I think it might be easier if you slowly moved from one part of the court to the other instead of jumping around. Just my opinion!

How is this a double? I even slowed it down and looked super clean to me: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nWGloZecft-kirs
@bryansales1801

The set looked clean but it's hard to see the rotation of the ball. While I know that the ball rotation isn't the end all and be all of a possible double contact, I'm thinking the ref in this case may have made that call based on the rotation. I'd have to find another angle to say that may be what happened here.

I agree but then 26:35 isn't called. Looked like a lot of "finger action" on Paredes set...IMHO.
@bryansales1801
@bryansales1801 Жыл бұрын
@@United_By_Water While this might be true in that particular case (I did see it go lower than her usual sets), as I mentioned before, this ref may be looking for ball rotation more than depth of set. She doesn't usually double or carry, and is considered one of the best setters in the world (World's best setter 2018), so it's possible she got away with this one. But Sponcil does it ALL THE TIME. For instance, watch 19:50 in half speed and you'll see what I mean, and then 26:59 as well.

@@bryansales1801 The camera angle isn't great but watching her hands release from the ball kinda made it look like a double. Defiantly would help seeing it directly behind or in front of her.
@bryansales1801

@@themckibbinbrothers that would be a slippery slope. The issue might be that eventually people would start getting really bad at setting because they never get called. As long as the refs keep it consistent throughout the match and do the best job at enforcing the existing rules as they were intended, it's all we could ask for, I suppose. Without the luxury of half speed replays, I don't envy the refs except the fact that they get to watch the world best play volleyball. Lol
