This really is one of the easiest and most amazing tricks ever. All you need is a plastic coat hanger and a coin. Balance the coin in the middle of the hanger then just start spinning the hanger around. It does take some practice but stick with it and you'll get it! If you really want to impress, learn to stop the spinning
hanger with the coin still balanced.

Why are people so dumb!! It's nothing to do with magenta or a secrets coin slot etc It's just the force of the spinning motion that's making the coin stay. Just like how the earth rotations helps us stay planted to the ground, duh

It can also be done with a metal hangar with the middle and hook end pulled outwards. Center the coin on the hook and put your finger in the bend at the other end. Used to do this when I was a kid about 30+ years ago.

"Centrifugal force is the apparent outward force that draws a rotating body away from the center of rotation. It is caused by the inertia of the body as the body's path is continually redirected." (Wikipedia) Centrifugal force is an apparent force, meaning it's fictitious. It isn't really a force, it only feels like it because of inertia. The only force acting on the coin here is the coat-hanger keeping the coin from flying outwards away from the center.

I noticed the argument over centrifugal forces and centripetal forces, and i am no physicist, and I am drunk and tired currently, but I was interested in it and researched it and this is what I found: Centrifugal force (from Latin centrum, meaning "center", and fugere, meaning "to flee") represents the effects of inertia that arise in connection with rotation and which are experienced as an outward force away from the center of rotation. In Newtonian mechanics, the term centrifugal force is use

Centripetal is the force that keeps the coin moving in the circular path, holds the coin to the hanger. Centrifugal is the force on the coin if it flies off the hanger due to lack of centripetal force.

Physics is what hold the coin on the hanger. I believe it's one of Newtons Laws? Coupled with other known theories such as the effect of momentum on objects, and G-Force theories is what holds the coin on the hanger. Not glue, or Chapstick as suggested below..
@DancingDarwin
@DancingDarwin 11 жыл бұрын
It actually still is centrifugal force. The trick is that you have to transform into a reference frame that is following the coin. As a result, centrifugal force originates as a fictitious force because of inertia (the wants to shoot away from the circle). As a result, because of Newton's 3rd law, the hanger will exert a high amount of normal force onto the coin. This normal force contributes to friction, which prevents the coin from sliding :D

It's called centrifugal force, and it only needs to be balanced perfectly in the middle (probably needs a lot of skill) then you spin it and the energy put into it is converted into centrifugal force! Or something like that!

special coins from magic shops have a steel shim inside. the hanger has a small magnet inserted. just enough for the coin to not fall off or slide. centripetal force (not centrifigul) is what sort of keeps in in place. I have steel shim coins and can do this. neat trick tho. he performed it very well. no patter. just pure illusion. I like it.

It's just a very common misconception that when you spin something that everything flies to the outside because of centrifugal forces. What's actually happening is an object is being pulled IN and it is its desire to keep moving in the same direction that pushes it to the outside.I know it's just a name to explain whats happening, but it's important not to feed the misconception of centrifugal force being it's own force for the people who didn't remember high school physics.
