I've danced the Hustle for years and always thought that it's NY Hustle. Only recently I learned that it's Latin Hustle as it was the last partner dance invented in this country and by Latinos. I'm glad YT fed me this link and learned about its history. Keep up the good and important work of telling the history of this dance.

Yeah baby. Love when the bass is so crazy it's just static in the video. I want to be in that place right now, twirling and dancing the night away against the city lights with the warm salty breeze cooling the sweat on my neck! Love it.

Thank you Willie Estrada for posting this awesome clip with Luis turning it out. Us Puerto Ricans from the Grand Concourse (167th street) use to turn it out at the disco's. I can't get enough of these clips and wish there were more of the late 70's and early 80's when the hustle ruled the clubs. I still have all my albums (over 900 of them) and my turntable and whirl it at home constantly. I just hope to find a clip where the dancers did some awesome spinning like corkscrews and headback spins. The boys turned it out just as fierce as the girls but the true queens of hustling where the boys...barnone! I think Willie you might have been related to my brothers late wife Melanie Merced (rip). She mentioned the Latin Symbolics to me many years ago and stated you were cousins. Thanks again for keeping The Hustle alive with these clips. God Bless You.

Awesome clip Sir! Did you get the "Latin" influence from Mambo dancing? And your timing...was a straight 4 count or what? I'm doing some research and believe your dancing is really sort of original salsa dancing before it was called that(!) differentiating it from Mambo. I've ordered your book btw. Deep thanks for sharing...truly! Also, did you always dance to disco music? Cheers!
@WillieEstradaMB2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, David, and yes I grew up dancing the Mambo since I was five years old. However, that is not me in that clip, it's Luis Rosa who was killed in a car accident several years ago. My book will highlight everything you are inquiring about in detail. The influence of Mambo and Salsa, as well as the influence of Swing, are also mentioned. You can hit me up via email if you like. @ Wilestrada424@gmail.com Thank you again David, and I look forward to getting your thoughts on my book. P.S. As part of your research you should also get "Salsa Rising" by Professor Juan Flores. There is an entire chapter in there about the Hustle. Professors Flores interviewed me at great length for that chapter. Best, Willie Estrada

We danced to Soul and Funk, but before that, it was Mambo and Salsa, which we incorporated into just about every dance we did since the early 1960s. The influence of a variety of music was instilled into our form of dance since I was a child of Caribbean descent. My father was my biggest influence from the time when I was a young boy.

I tracked down the disco track as these hustle dancers "danced" - here - a sort of a quotation to "Could It Be Magic" by Barry Manilow in 1975, discofied around 1977 or so by the disco queen herself, Donna Summer here.

Luis and Mary Ann Rosa. Yes, They are NYC Hustle legends.!! I remember them doing Lifts dips and drops on the concrete sidewalk at Lincoln center 20 years ago during a summer dance social just for fun. . It doesn't get more hardcore hustle than that.
