AFISHAL designed and hand made this futuristic looking instrument he calls the DJ DRUMS!!!
Its basically a giant MIDI controller that gives AFISHAL the ability to remix and perform music live on stage in an incredibly visual way!
Each DJ Drum when struck lights up the giant LED tubes and triggers a pre programmed sound. Well its not like its exactly hard to make.. just take the pads of your electronic drum kit, connect them to your computer with an arduino and your off... they're just a bigger version of something like a launch pad or anything. its not anything special or difficult... thats also how it also activates the lights as well, just add some LED's to the same circuit

That's what a controller is theoretically. You set it up to play sound on contact or loops of your choosing. A lot of street artists are starting to use them more to get a band effect. Really cool nontheless.

It's not really about the music but the presentation. you are absolutely correct that you can do this on a soundboard, and the guy on the mic even says so. but the whole presentation of doing it up with drums bring a new medium of presentation to it is all. the fact the guy does it well and can showboat while doing it just adds to the show. i applaud them ^^

Visual entertainment. It's like the guy said it was.. a giant mini controller. He produces the music and it continues playing on contact. I guarantee he rehearses where and when he hits certain spots during the song to make it appear as if he is freestyling it to a certain degree instead of hitting the same two drums over and over again, because where is the fun and excitement in that? It's great and unique nontheless. He found a niche in the industry and capitalizing on it. Very well done.

That’s not what’s happening. He’s playing simple loops using pads, it’s not that difficult. Anyone who makes music on a drum machine can memorize patterns like this. If you pay attention, you can see he isn’t hitting random pads.

Anyone can just go to a music store or something and buy electronic drums from, say, Roland or Yamaha... but try to actually build your own... it's a whole other skillset my friend. Funny story, the Blue Man Group actually copied me on this occasion! When was on tour in Florida in 2019, the Creative Director invited me backstage to see all their instruments and meet the team. He pointed out that they made one of their electronic instruments by watching and reverse engineering the instrument I invented. Obvious I'm hugely inspired by them, so it couldn't have been any more of a compliment when I found that out!!
