MY MISTAKE: the picture of Armstrong at the end of the clip on NASA was meant to be a young picture of John Glen. I didn't realise I had used the wrong picture until well after the video was released.

Great video! I love learning about Australia, especially because I lived on the east coast in Sydney back in the early 1980s. But my sister and her husband traveled the whole West Coast all the way up to the river upon which sharks ride the tide going inland. They really loved Perth and Western Australia! A close friend from Laguna Beach (California) high school and his wife moved to Perth after graduating from University. They lived there many years until a divorce. He said the wind bothered him in Perth, so he moved to Tasmania. But I think it's pretty windy there too!

Yeah the wind here is something you have to get used to but in summer it can be a good thing as it blows in off the sea on a hot day and cools us down :)

The lights of Perth were left on after the suggestion of a gentleman named Bill King who lived in Woodlands at the time. We bought his house early 64 and he moved back to England. He and his family came back and bought a house about 100 metres away, later moving back to Pommyland again.

You missed the Perth Trench, I was stunned when I read in to that. The Marine life alone. That explains why there are so many sharks around the back of Rotto, not to mention why so many whales and orca's. That was enjoyable, thanks for sharing.

How did I not know Ningaloo Reef is lo ger than the Great Barrier Reef? Wild, learning new stuff about my home ❤
@WesternAustraliaNowAndThen
@WesternAustraliaNowAndThen 6 ай бұрын
Ah, not quite. Ningaloo at 300 kilometres long is one of the longest fringing reefs n the world, meaning that it is located very close to the land. The Great Barrier reef is much longer at about 2300 kilometres is much longer but is much further out to sea.

Western Australia is the largest iron ore producer in the world. Western Australia is the second largest producer of gold in the world. You sort of covered it with the distances to other capital cities, but Perth is the most isolated capital city in the world. But another interesting fact, If you were to take Perth and plonk it in the US, it would become the 4th largest city in the US. It would be the second largest city in the UK. It would be the second largest city in a lot of other countries in the world and would actually eclipse the size of most countries capital cities.

Physical size wise, yes Perth is huge, very spread out and spreading further every year. We have never learned to build up.

the main attraction of western australia is its economic strength if it was not for that alot people would not live here because its the biggest police nanny state in australia you have more freedom to camp in places in crowded europe than western australia.I knew people that worked in the pilbara in the 1980s to make money They just wanted make money and leave western australia as soon as possible
@WesternAustraliaNowAndThen
@WesternAustraliaNowAndThen 6 ай бұрын
Well I'm with you on the 'too many rules nanny state' thing but at least local councils have woken up to the idea that travellers bring in money and they have started to be a lot more friendly with regard to providing great free or cheap campsites. It used to be terrible with 'NO CAMPING' signs everywhere but that has really changed for the better. There are some placwes like Broome, Busselton and Margaret River that are still unfriendly unless you pay big bucks for a campsite but most others are pretty good.

you forgot the 2 biggest facts; 1. It's as expensive as hell. 2. It's as boring as hell.
@WesternAustraliaNowAndThen
@WesternAustraliaNowAndThen 6 ай бұрын
Well I agree with number one, it certainly isn't cheap here any more but boring all depends on what you are looking for. If you love nature and the outdoors then you have almost unlimited choices to explore but if you like more city related pursuits then that is going to be a lot more limited.
