Really like your training methods !!! the checking him when he whinnies is exactly right . My grandfather would say ,if you let them do little things then they may try more ,and he affirmed that they should be focused on the job at hand . I feel he is so grateful for saving him he wants to please you .

Great lessons for all of us! Must admit though, when you said to him " don't be lazy, you can walk faster than that" my first thought was be careful what you ask for - if he takes off in a healthy trot you'll be breathing alot heavier....or he'll really be pulling you!🤣

@@bonsaidouglas9180 It's both. He did an interesting video about catching horses that don't know him, and he showed a bit about training them to be easy to catch. This is so much fun to watch. Oliver's a pretty smart boy, and sure wants to please you. I did have a funny moment. As you were asking Oliver to come back to you, essentially blind, all I could think of was "trust fall"... It's an exercise where you fall backwards from a slight height, and trust your team to catch you. It took a LOT of trust for Oliver to back into the unknown. He was backing into your voice, and that was all he needed. :)

Oliver is such a calm boy, not sure he needs the blinders. A lot of draft horses can be trained fine without them. He looks fancy with his new gear tho!
@SeniorBliss
@SeniorBliss Жыл бұрын
Agree, looks like torture devices
@cattymajiv
@cattymajiv Жыл бұрын
@@SeniorBliss Maybe it looks like that, but it is not. Maybe you have the harness related in your mind to the fake leather, straps, and metal in the B+D type of porn movies. This not related to that in any way. The mentality of the trainer/rider is the key. It can be torture, or it can be an interesting experience for them. If they are accustomed to the idea that training and riding are pleasant experiences with interesting variety, then it's very stimulating for them and they like it. Trust is the key. If trust is broken it's VERY hard to repair! But JR loves horses, and strives very hard to never make a training session stressful. This is for his own sake as well as the horses', because stress will introduce resistance into the relationship with people forever. A trusting horse is a dream to work with! JR and most good horsepeople know that, and work hard to keep it calm and easy. So don't worry. At first the harness feels different to horse that isn't used to it, but there is nothing about a well fitted harness that is painful, even when pulling weight. And Clydesdales have been bred to pull, just like Sheepdogs have been bred to round up sheep etc. They do it instictively, and many even like it, as long as the load isn't a heavy one. Like people horses are very intelligent, so they need exercise, both physical and mental. Without it they get lazy and unhealthy, physically and mentally. If we try to read their body language and avoid putting them through unpleasant experiences, especially physical and mental pain, we are helping them by making their life more interesting and healthier. Horses that live in a feild and never do anything become extremely unhealthy in every way. This is proven by veterinary studies. And by personal experience of thousands of knowledgable horsepeople. It's easy to tell a happy horse from an unhappy one. Because they're very high strung animals they don't hesitate to tell us when they're unhappy. They only hide it if they're conditioned by fear that to show pain will result in even worse pain. So with a trainer like JR, who is very transparent about his methods, we have no reason to fear. Like all of us he's imperfect, but his instincts and intentions are kind and caring. That's why Oliver loves and trusts him so much.

You and Oliver did just great. He was and will still be wondering what the heck, how come I can't see the sides, but he will get used to it. What shone through to me is that it is VERY obvious that you have a great bond with this guy and he trusts you. Since you both went into today's training, I would have to say the guys that train together , stay together! Doesn't hurt that Oliver knows you and your wife made him feel good after that awful EPM. People say I "humanize" animals feelings, well I have had bunches of them, horses, cats, tons of dogs, and I been observing them for over sixty years. They do have feelings, and they KNOW stuff you wouldn't believe they could. Great work today guys.

It takes time to adjust to the new vision field with the blinders you loose periphery vision which effects his feeling for where he is in time and space. Be brave Oliver you are doing great!
