👉🏻 "Courtship": kinetic art from the 1970's- two magnets, counterbalanced, interact chaotically in a dance that is different each time they are set into motion.
👉🏻 Magic Portal Illusion: this astonishing design utilizes the famous barber pole illusion to make it appear as though these colorful strands are passing in and out of a 4th dimension. The mechanical principle employed is similar to that of a lead screw and slider type actuator, except here translating the slider up and down rotates the helical strands at just the right rate to produce the illusion. An amazing 3D print creation of Ada Cohen, expertly printed and assembled by Alex L. Kling.
👉🏻 Perspective Puzzle: twelve flat images, when ordered and spaced correctly, combine to produce this 3D illusion of structure and depth. This vintage toy by Mattel was sold as “Virtual Illusion 3D Puzzle” where the challenge is to scramble/shuffle the 12 sheets and then place them in the correct orientation and order to complete the image.
👉🏻 Gravimorph Spindle
👉🏻 KaleidoFlow Fluid Cell: the phenomenon of streaming birefringence colorfully reveals the temporary shear stresses induced in a liquid by a moving plastic sphere. The “Glorb” device design features a cylindrical cell with polarizing filters as the top and bottom windows and filled with this special rheoscopic fluid and a plastic bead. This assembly then slides into a base with white LEDs to supply backlighting. Many thanks to Laminar Sciences Corp for supplying this beautiful display cell and bottles of KaleidoFlow fluid for experimentation.
👉🏻 Anamorphic Projection Puzzle
👉🏻 Mirror Anamorphosis with a Pint
👉🏻 Kalliroscope with Convection Stand: visualizing convection currents. Invented and produced by Paul Matisse in the 1970s, suspended microscopic flat crystals of guanine reflect light and allow visualization of the fluid's motion. This rheoscopic fluid is special in that the guanine crystals are the same density as the tetrachloroethylene liquid so the crystals never settle to the bottom allowing the fluid to show the slightest movement. The stand is only about 5 degrees C warmer than room temperature- enough to create the convection currents seen here- due a heating element (a simple resistor) in the base.
👉🏻 CMY Color Cube: cube within a cube illusion with the physics and psychophysics of color perception- demonstrated with this acrylic art object. Thin films cover parallel sides of the transparent cube in cyan, magenta, and yellow which comprise the elements of the CMY subtractive color model- viewing the cube through various angles allows exploration of multiple and interesting combinations of the CMY elements.

7:58 In the red parts, both above and below, there is not just one magnet, but at least 2 or more, with alternately oriented poles. So when you rotate the top they either attract or repel

They are diametrically magnetized magnets (imagine coloring half of the face of a coin green and the other half of that same side red, and you get a simple visual). When you rotate them around a spindle, they poles either align or don't...repel or attract. (I agree that each piece is probably two stacked magnets for extra strength, and just to wanted to add this info for more context)

accurate answer is there are 2 stronger magnets that always attract because their opposite poles are facing each other, that's why the two red parts always try to attract the other one. But there is also two weaker magnets that either attract or repel themselves depending on if they're facing an opposite pole or the same pole. The fact that two stronger magnets are always attracting each other is important to understand why it always tries to close at first.

Think I have it figured out. The red strands are easy to understand. They are a set of perfect spirals like a screw thread. On this the black movable ring slides. It has a set of spiral holes to match the red strands. The trick is the yellow central strand. This is or could be irregular in shape. The sliding ring could have a big hole in the middle to allow for this. The yellow strand is connected to the red strands at each end so they rotate together. I have a 3D Printer and it would be easy enough to make one.

The wiggly tube dude actually has some interesting science behind it. Obviously there is a lot of air moving through the dude, and when he is upright the amount of air is not enough to keep him upright so gravity does its thing and pulls him down. This causes the fabric to kink, a process which is more mathematical than physical but it's the same reason you can't curl a piece of paper around a ball without folding. This folding occludes the air flow which moves the fold up the tube dude. The tube acts like a balloon at this point and stands up because the increased air pressure inside can support it with the tension of the material. Once the fold reaches the top it opens and allows the air pressure to escape, repeating the process.

Magnets always make for the best toys. Back in high school a friend of mine got his hands on some sort of huge industrial strength magnet. It wasn't neodymium but was still stupidly strong. It took three of us the better part of ten minutes to find a way to get it loose from the side of a dumpster. The fun ended one day when we were walking past a gas station and he for some reason thought it'd be a great idea to toss the magnet up towards the canopy. The magnet ended up stuck to that canopy nearly 20 years until the station was demolished. Even got painted over a couple times.

Each Novatrope comes with multiple 3D printed translucent sculptures (I will feature others soon in future posts) each based on phyllotactic spirals such as the well known Fibonacci curve.
