AMAZING GRACE
Amazing Grace. One of the most sung and most recorded songs in history. "Amazing Grace" was sung by Elvis and Aretha Franklin. It was sung when Nelson Mandela was set free and before Martin Luther King gave the 'I have a dream' speech. And it was even on the Simpsons!
The lyrics to "Amazing Grace" were written by John Newton, a former slave trader who underwent a profound spiritual transformation. Born in 1725 in London, Newton grew up in a devout Christian family but strayed from his faith during his youth. At the age of 11, he joined his father at sea and began a career in the maritime industry. Newton's life took a dark turn when he became involved in the transatlantic slave trade, a lucrative but morally reprehensible business.
During his time as a slave trader, Newton experienced numerous hardships, including a near-death experience during a violent storm at sea. It was this harrowing event that prompted him to reflect on his life and eventually led to his conversion to Christianity. Over the following years, Newton gradually abandoned his involvement in the slave trade and devoted himself to the Christian faith.
The inspiration for "Amazing Grace" came to Newton in 1772 while he was serving as a minister in Olney, England. Reflecting on his own experiences of redemption and forgiveness, he penned the now-famous lyrics, which speak of the transformative power of God's grace. The words resonate with themes of repentance, salvation, and the promise of God's mercy:
’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!
The Lord hath promised good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be
As long as life endures.
When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we first begun.
