The guy next to me is Mark Lazan :) Respectfully, playing off center definitely doesn’t mean that trumpet isn’t right for you or that you should switch. There’s many trumpet players that play off to the side….of the top of my head: William Vacchiano (Former principal trumpet of New York Philharmonic & professor at Juilliard) Louis Armstrong Maynard Ferguson Dizzy Gillespie Jon Fadis Chris Botti (plays high on the upper lip) If I were to really do some research I’d find so much more. But the list above is already a heavyweight list. If these players had moved to a different instrument we’d be robbed of some great trumpet playing :( My professor in college David Hickman (who has probably taught the most trumpet college professors through his Doctorate program at ASU) often stressed to us never to change a person’s embouchure that’s been playing for years if it’s not an obvious hinderance.
