I already do what you suggest. Sadly my last purchase (Loakes) had mildew and I’ve been gradually treating the smell for over a year, but once I get rid of the smell and get the Saphir range of products on them, they will have been worth the effort at only £30 for the pair. It’s a bit of an interest/project too.

After watching your earlier video I bought a pair of Loake shoes from ebay ( £12). When I received the parcel I was shocked to feel how heavy they were! My normal '£25' shoes weigh nothing, now I know why! My 'new' shoes are much more solid, comfortable and will probobaly last me many years. Thanks for your advice.

Great to hear that you got a great deal. I think Loake are a really good entry point into the world of quality shoes and can be bought at amazing prices on ebay. I have several pairs bought this way and have been serving me well for years - all bought for bargain prices. Don't stop at Loake now you have got your first ebay victory - keep an eye out for even shoes from the higher echelons of the shoe industry on ebay - I've been very lucky with Grenson and Sanders, as these are not as well known as Church & Cheaney, etc. but there are many more out there. Good luck with your new shoes and happy hunting. Ash

I have the same brogues from new. They developed a fault more than likely because the shop I bought them from stores them in a unheated factory. Anyway I contacted Sanders and sent them off for repair. Not only did they repair/ re-sole my shoes they re-healed and added new laces all free of charge. You can not fault customer service like that. They also complimented me on my maintenance regime of my shoes. Great video and thanks for posting.

Try bulling under the arches with neutral polish, gives that extra touch. I used to attach pride to showing leather soles, but have come to value the fitting of Topy style rubber to the front half, it takes to worry out of leather soles in the wet, and makes the life of the sole pretty much everlasting. Some form of LuLu plates in the front are also a very good idea as we all tend to drag our toes to some extent, and they add a degree of interest. Its worth checking out the channel of Bedo's Leather Works here on YT, he has many vids of Topy's and plates being fitted.

Thanks for the comments - it is only my will power that prevents me from polishing every part of the to the ridiculous degree (I am a bit of a polish addict) if such a thing is possible. I must admit that I didn't go too nuts on these shoes, as it was always my intention to sell them on after I made the video, but I agree, the application of a rubber protector pad can 'winterize' the shoe and make it a choice for all seasons. Best regards, Ash

Just bought a fabulous pair of J.Cheaney Broad II black brogues from their factory shop in Desborough Northants.Brand new not seconds £195.Lots of shoes in the shop well worth a visit,Phone before you visit to see what is in stock.Factory shops in Northampton are great Trickers,Crocket & JONES,Churches,and John Lobb.

By an amazing coincidence I was actually in Cheaney's store a few weeks ago (just before life changed for us all) and filmed a video on my experiences of travelling in Northants and stopping at some of the shoe factories - it's out on Saturday. Great result with the shoes for you there, I loved the Cheaney shop and had a great chat with the 2 chaps who were working there when I visited. Cheaney are one of my favourite brands and I love my chukka boots from Cheaney. Thanks for the comments. Ash

Ah, as soon as I saw the thumbnail I knew those were Sanders/Army brogues. Got a pair myself, nice and versatile.

You made an excellent find Ash. I find the combination of Brogues and Scotch Grain (is that the correct term?) particularly appealing. Thank you for pointing us in the right direction. I am sure to follow in your footsteps. I have noticed Cadet shoes on eBay. Would you reckon that they would be of comparable quality to your Sanders or of inferior construction? All the best.
@TheChapsGuide3 жыл бұрын
I think Cadet shoes will refer to the shoes issued in the British military - these are directly moulded soles and of inferior quality to the Sanders and other Goodyear welted footwear. I wore those shoes for many years as a serviceman myself. They are good utility shoes, but not for smart use in my opinion. There are great bargains to find on ebay without resorting to plastic sole shoes - good luck!!

If they had been military issue they would have had the MOD arrow stamped on them, and would have been double soled with steel heel plates, toe plates and tackets on the sole.
@TheChapsGuide Жыл бұрын
I was issued manu of these exact same shoes when I was in HMF and they came just as seen, no MOD markings or additional steel plates. Sanders have been contracting to the MOD for decades now and their shoes are amazing. I have a few pairs from my service that are well over 30-years old now and still going strong.

@@TheChapsGuide I didn't realise that the RAF were issued brogues, I thought their issue was restricted to kilted Regiments.
@TheChapsGuide Жыл бұрын
@@williambelford9661 Apologies - I thought you were referring to the Sanders Oxford shoes. You are somewhat correct, they are often issued to Scottish regiments, but also other line regiments, such as a number of Gurkha regiments and a few others.
@robbrownfield7677 Жыл бұрын
The MoD stopped using the broad arrow mark in the mid 80’s. As these brogues still have textured leather and no heel plate, I suspect these were an Officers mess dress brogues. My mess brogues are identical, but I spent the time flattening the leather with a hot spoon so I could get a proper shine on them. My other brogues that I wear in No2 and No1 uniform have metal heels and toes and again, bulled to a deep shine. They are only worn for parades. My latest ones are no longer made by Sanders and come with a rubber coated heel and sole and are “duty” brogues to be worn around camp when wearing Barrack Dress.

So pleased to find this, indeed i was looking at Loakes and Grensons on ebay today... As you say some absolute bargains... Fine, informative video sir
@TheChapsGuide3 жыл бұрын
Loakes are a great bargain for the quality level, but stick to the 1880 range, thats the golden ticket. Grensons ae good quality, I have about 6 pairs and they are lesser regarded than some of the other big names, so bargains can regularly be found. Sanders are perhaps the most under appreciated of all. Good hunting!
