Chinese coaches like to pick their setters very early. Setters usually start training before 7 and if they can’t make national team before 20, they’re done. Sports players also go to sports schools that focus more on training instead of normal schools that focus on academics. Ding started playing volleyball in middle school at 12 yo. And she didn’t go to sports schools. She trains 2 hours after class and that was it. It was more of a hobby, until a coach from Liaoning saw her play and offered her a chance to try for their team, which was in desperate need of a setter. And after high school graduation, Ding eventually chose volleyball over Gaokao. She started her real professional training in Liaoning at 18, which was deemed too late to achieve anything by most coaches. But Liaoning stuck with her, and even made her team captain at 20 years old with barely any real experience. Liaoning even stated that their main goal was to make Ding a national team setter. At that time it was regarded as a joke. Nobody took them seriously, a club that has never produced a decent setter and a setter that barely played any real volleyball. And in 2015, less than one year away from the Rio Olympics, she made the national team at 25 years old. Every time she subbed in she made an impact. Although she was never Lang Ping’s first pick (she’s too short for a team so tall), she became the main setter of this Lang Ping era.

I agree. 2015 World Cup was the start of her era. She even got the 2nd setter position in 2016 Olympics which was supposed for Shen Jingsi. Fortunately, she really proved herself pivotal for the team’s success especially during the championship game against Serbia. So proud of her and Yan Ni. They’re my old but gold tandem. Liaoning is lucky to have both of them.

Some people tend to overlook Ding Xia’s skills because of her spikers not noticing how her great and fast her court making decisions were everytime. She can change the tempo and rhythm inside the court which makes their opponent having a hard time guessing on who to block.

Unfortunately, she did not play very well at the Olympics because of a serious injury (even if it was not made public). Many people ignore her perfect defense and she tried to make up for the lack of the pass of Liberia’s every time. It still cannot be denied that she is the best setter of the Chinese team in the past five years. She still deserves it. Thank you Ding, for your contribution.
