Yes most of this footage is when the Graf Zeppelin landed at Mines Field (now LAX) on the Tokyo to LA leg of the William Randolph Hearst sponsored Round-the-World flight. The background noise was a unique addition that made you feel like you were there. And to think this first passenger carrying commercial Round-the-World happened 92-years ago. Amazing.

And it nearly ended in disaster there in L.A. They valved so much gas trying to land that they had to remove scads of material & even 6 crew members to achieve a lift off. And even then ? They had no aerostatic lift & had to resort to a take off, much like an airplane. They BARELY cleared some high tension wires & towers. It was so close that everyone said that if it had not been Dr. Eckener at the control ? They would've succumbed to disaster..... 🚬😎

Great to hear thoes 5 Maybach VL.II 550hp gas engines she had! You can barely hear them at idle speed, then clearly as 4 of them went into idle reverse, with the aft engine in full reverse ect. This was done to slow to a hover, so they can drop the mooring lines, and pitch the nose down 5° to let the men on the ground to grab the gondola. This landing had a strong thermal updraft, so she took a little longer to touch down. Fantastic audio and video!

I'm guessing the commentary we hear is a radio announcer, as radio and newsreel people would have been in the same general area on the field. Its sometimes difficult to hear the announcer, as he is not on the film sound mic, but a short distance away.

The sound of the Graf landing is the original audio synced to the orginal video. That's how her 550hp gas engines sounded at idle reverse. At full ahead, they were a littlie higher pitched, and louder
